Student unions in Pakistan have always played an important role in politics. But in 1984, General Zia -ul -Haq banned student unions across the country. This ban was imposed to prevent political unrest, but due to this, youth leadership and democratic participation had been suppressed for decades.
Big change in Pakistan
In 2022, the ban on student unions in Sindh province was removed. People praised this move. People said that the students union can help solve problems like harassment and lack of democratic participation in the campus. However, the student union of Pakistan is still buried and students union elections are not held everywhere.
Pakistani leader who started as a student worker
Despite the ban, many well -known leaders of Pakistan started their career with eye politics. A name comes from Sheikh Rashid Ahmed. He has been elected to the Parliament of Pakistan eight times from Rawalpindi. Rashid Ahmed was an active student leader at Garden College, Rawalpindi and then studied law in Lahore. Another name comes in this episode, that is Hussain Haqqani. Hussain Haqqani was a former Pakistan ambassador to the US. He also made his debut as a student worker. Hussain was associated with Hakkani Jamaat -e -Islami’s student organization Jamiat.
With this, another name comes out of Javed Hashmi. Javed Hashmi had stepped into student politics since the age of 20. He participated in many big demonstrations. He also won many student elections in Punjab University.
