India has done wonders in medical science and for the first time has created indigenous super antibiotic ‘Naphithromycin’. This medicine fights those bacteria on which other antibiotics do not work. This medicine can prove to be a boon for diabetes and cancer patients. According to Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh, this is India’s first indigenous antibiotic, which is completely safe and effective. This medicine, prepared after 14 years of hard work, has proved beneficial for 97 percent of the patients.

This problem used to occur earlier

Let us tell you that when a diabetic patient has difficulty in breathing or gets infection during cancer treatment, then old medicines do not work. In such a situation, patients are very worried, but Nafithromycin has worked wonders on such infections. This medicine is specially made for respiratory diseases like pneumonia, which is caused by Streptococcus bacteria. This bacteria is responsible for 33 percent of pneumonia cases. According to the Union Minister, this medicine is 10 times more powerful than Azithromycin and cures severe pneumonia in just three days. This medicine was tested on patients from India, America and Europe and the results were excellent.

Who made this medicine?

Wockhardt Limited of Mumbai played a major role in making this medicine, in which the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) and BIRAC (Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council) supported. Wockhardt scientists worked hard for 14 years to make this medicine under public-private partnership. First lab test, then animal trial and finally this medicine was tested on humans. It is believed that this medicine with the name ‘Miknaf’ will be available in the market by the end of 2025. Its prices will also be kept affordable, so that the common man can buy it. At the same time, the government has planned to include it in the Ayushman Bharat scheme.

What will be the benefit?

It is noteworthy that antibiotic resistance (AMR) is a big problem in India. Every year about 6 lakh people lose their lives due to this. At the same time, around 20 lakh deaths occur due to pneumonia all over the world. Now the fight will become easier with medicines like naphithromycin. It attacks multi-drug resistant bacteria, which render old medicines useless. Dr. Singh said that this medicine is a game changer for India’s pharma industry. Now we not only make generic medicines, but are also making new discoveries.

Good news found in gene therapy also

Apart from this, India has also done wonders in gene therapy. The first indigenous clinical trial for the treatment of hemophilia (bleeding disease) was successful. This trial was conducted with the help of DBT at Christian Medical College, Vellore. This brought improvement in 60-70 percent of the patients and there was no bleeding. This trial has been published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
