The Supreme Court has expressed deep displeasure over the increasing suicides of students in major educational institutions of the country. The court has said that it is extremely worrying that more than 57,000 educational institutions are not cooperating in the survey of the committee constituted by the Supreme Court. These institutes also include major institutes like IIT, IIM, AIIMS and NIT.
Around 98 students have taken their own lives since 2018. Of these, 39 students are from IITs, 25 from NITs, 25 from central universities and 4 from IIMs. But the indifference of educational institutions towards this serious problem has disappointed the Supreme Court. The high-level panel constituted on the instructions of the court has received responses from only 3,500 institutions in this survey, while 57,000 institutions did not cooperate.
According to media reports, the Supreme Court bench headed by Justice J.B. Pardiwala and Justice R. Mahadevan expressed deep concern in this matter. Senior advocate and amicus curiae Aparna Bhat said that many premier institutes including 17 IITs, 15 IIMs, 16 AIIMS and 24 NITs did not participate in the survey despite reminders being sent four times. This survey is being conducted to find out the reasons and their solutions to the increasing incidents of suicide among students.
No concrete answer was received – Court
The Supreme Court said that this entire exercise is being done in the interest of the students and all the institutions are expected to cooperate fully in this survey so that the National Task Force can prepare its interim or final report. The bench also said that the Central Government gave instructions to these institutions four times, but till now no concrete response has been received.
Court gave strict instructions
The court directed the Central Government to take this issue seriously and once again asked all the institutions to cooperate in the survey. The Supreme Court made it clear that if the institutions do not cooperate, they may have to pass some orders which may harm their reputation.
Task force formed
The Supreme Court has constituted a multi task force in this matter, headed by retired judge Ravindra Bhat. This panel includes psychiatry, psychology and other experts. The work of the panel is to identify various reasons for student suicide and suggest solutions. These include many reasons like ragging, caste discrimination, gender-based discrimination, sexual harassment, academic pressure, economic burden, mental health stigma, race, tribal identity, disability, sexual orientation, political views and religious beliefs.
