Surinder Kaur was born on 25 November 1929 in Punjab. Even before the partition of India-Pakistan, his songs had started making a place in the hearts of people. His love for music was amazing. But, initially he was not allowed to sing in the house. His elder brother understood this and helped Surinder and his sister Prakash Kaur in getting music education. At the age of 12, both sisters started learning classical music from Master Inayat Hussain and Pandit Mani Prasad.

Surinder Kaur’s first big break came from Lahore Radio in 1943, when she auditioned for a children’s music program and was selected. After this, he and his sister sang a duet in their first album, in which the song ‘Maavan Te Dhiyan Ral Baithiyan’ became quite popular. This song became such a hit that both of them became stars overnight.
After Partition, his family came to Delhi and then settled in Mumbai. In Mumbai, he started working in the film industry as a playback singer. Surinder married Sardar Joginder Singh Sodhi, who was a professor at Delhi University. It was the full support and love of her husband Joginder, which took Surinder to this point. Both of them wrote and sang many superhit songs together, like ‘Chan Kittha Gujaari Aayi Raat Ve’, ‘Lathe Di Chadar’, ‘Gori Diya Jhanjhraan’ and ‘Sadke-Sadke Jandiye Mutiyare Ni.’

She was called the ‘Nightingale of Punjab’ for her contribution and was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1984 and the Padma Shri in 2006.
