Why doesn’t an eclipse occur on every new moon?
Solar eclipse occurs only on Amavasya. But solar eclipse does not occur on every Amavasya. The reason for this is that the Moon’s orbit is inclined by about 5 degrees to the plane of the Earth’s orbit. Therefore, most of the time the Moon’s shadow passes above or below the Earth and the correct alignment required for a solar eclipse does not occur. A solar eclipse occurs only when the Sun, Moon and Earth come in a straight line, which does not happen on every Amavasya.
