T20 World Cup 2026: As soon as the schedule of the T20 World Cup to be held in India and Sri Lanka next year has been released, the hustle and bustle in the political and cricket circles has intensified. The reason for this is the decision to make Ahmedabad the primary venue for the final match. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aditya Thackeray is simply calling it “partisan politics”.
Why is Ahmedabad getting every big match?
Aditya Thackeray raised questions on social media platform Thackeray sarcastically wrote, “Why is there an obsession with holding every big match in Ahmedabad? Has it always been a traditional cricket venue?”
He says that Wankhede Stadium could have been a great choice for the final in terms of capacity, atmosphere and history. He reminded that the memorable World Cup final of 2011 was also played on this ground.
What is the full schedule?
T20 World Cup 2026 will be played from 7 February to 8 March next year. A total of 55 matches will be held on 8 grounds in India and Sri Lanka. In India, matches have been given to Delhi, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Chennai and Mumbai, while in Sri Lanka, Colombo, Kandy and another venue have been selected. Italy will also participate for the first time in this tournament with participation of 20 teams. 8 teams from four groups will reach the Super-8, then the semi-final matches will be held in Kolkata/Colombo and Mumbai.
The venue of the final depends on Pakistan
The biggest thing is that this time the venue of the final match depends on two conditions.
1- If Pakistan reaches the final, the match will be held in Colombo.
2- If Pakistan does not reach the final, then the final will be played in Ahmedabad.
This is becoming the biggest cause of controversy.
Aditya Thackeray’s allegation
Aditya Thackeray alleged that there are many venues in India which are capable of hosting the World Cup final, such as Eden Gardens, Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai and IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali. According to him, due to the ‘favouritism’ of ICC and BCCI, injustice is being done to other cities.
Ahmedabad vs Mumbai, who is better?
Wankhede Stadium Capacity: 33,500
Narendra Modi Stadium Capacity: 1.32 lakh
It is clear that Ahmedabad has the biggest potential. When the final is held here, more and more cricket fans can watch the final. Even before the final, this dispute over the schedule has brought the World Cup even more into discussion. Now it remains to be seen how ICC reacts to this political dispute.
