T20 World Cup 2026: Before the start of T20 World Cup 2026, the biggest concern of the Indian team remains the fitness of Washington Sundar. No clear decision has been taken yet regarding this all-rounder who has been away from the field for a long time due to injury. Team India will start its campaign against USA on February 7 and it is believed that about 72 hours before that, a final decision on Sundar’s playing or staying out can be taken.
Decision will be taken on 4th February
According to the report of Times of India, on February 4, Washington Sundar’s fitness test will be conducted at BCCI’s Center of Excellence in Bengaluru. This test will decide whether he is completely fit for the T20 World Cup or not. Sundar was injured during the ODI match against New Zealand on January 11, after which he is engaged in recovery.
Why are the selectors waiting?
The last date for changes in the team for the T20 World Cup is January 30, but ICC rules provide some relief in injury cases. If a player is not completely fit, changes are possible during the tournament after the approval of the technical committee. For this reason, the selectors are in no hurry and are waiting for the medical report.
Sundar trying to recover from injury
In recent times, there have been some positive signs regarding Sundar’s fitness. He has started light training. On January 28, he did bat in the nets, but the next day he maintained distance from any kind of full drill or match simulation.
Team India’s preparation before the World Cup
The Indian team will assemble together in Mumbai on 3 February and the practice session will begin on the same day. After this, the first warm-up match will be played against South Africa on 4 February. Sundar’s fitness test is also to be conducted on the same day, due to which the picture can become clear to a great extent.
Backup plan also ready
If Washington Sundar is unable to pass the fitness test, then the selectors can move on to the backup option. In such a situation, there is a possibility of Riyan Parag being included in the team.
