If you are a gmail user, then there is an important alert for you. Google recently released a security warning stating that hackers are targeting Gmail passwords on a large scale. This danger is reportedly not limited to only common users, including high-profile accounts. Google’s VP has clearly said that now it has become very dangerous to depend only on the password.

For Forbes’s report UnderHackers are trying a large number of Gmail login with the help of AI and breeted database. This activity has also seen a boom on Google’s security dashboard. Especially those accounts which are not activated 2‑steep Verification (2FA) are the most in danger.

Not only this, Google has more than 1.7 billion password-based attacks since the end of 2024 Detect Has happened. The company has said that all users should immediately shift to passkey or at least app-based 2FA system.

1. Turn on 2FA (Two-Factor Authentication) in Google Account

  • Go to Accounts.google.com/Security
  • Click “Get Started” in “2‑step Verification” section
  • Enter your password and after OTP verification
  • Add Authenticator App (eg Google Authenticator) or Backup Code
  • Avoid SMS based 2FA, Authenticator app is more secure

2. Set Google Passkey

  • Google now supports passkey, allowing you to login with face unlock, fingerprint or device pin, without typing passwords. For this:
  • Go to G.CO/PassKeys
  • Click “Create a Passkey”
  • Set the biometric or screen lock of your device
  • From next time Gmail login will be directly from face/fingerprint

3. Follow this 3 more safety tips

  • Run Security Checkup via G.CO/Securitycheckup
  • Remove immediately if there is doubt on any activity or app
  • Change the password immediately when logged with unknown devices
  • Keep a separate password for each website
