8th Pay Commission: There has been a continuous stir for the last several days regarding the Eighth Pay Commission. After continuous rounds of meetings, their demands are being asked from the employee organizations. For which after all the praise was on 31st May. Now recently once again the last date for this has been changed. Now employees can send their suggestions, memorandum and demands till June 15, 2026.

Update on fitment factor
At present, the most discussed thing is the fitment factor, because on the basis of this the new basic salary of the employees will be decided. Fitment factor is a multiplier by which the existing basic salary is converted into the new basic salary.

Demands of 8th Pay Commission
The government has not yet declared any official fitment factor for the 8th Pay Commission. However, employee organizations, pensioners’ groups and experts have put forward their demands before the government. At present, proposals ranging from 1.92 to 3.83 have come forward regarding fitment factor. It is clear from this that the expectations of the employees are very high, while the government will also have to keep in mind the financial burden.

• The staff side of the National Council of Joint Consultative Machinery (JCM) has demanded a fitment factor of 3.83, which is one of the biggest demands so far.
• National Pensioners Organization (NPO) has suggested a fitment factor of 3.25 and Indian Trade Union Congress (ITUC) has suggested 3.0.
• Many employee organizations of Jammu and Kashmir have demanded fitment factor between 2.86 to 3.68.
• On the other hand, former Finance Secretary Subhash Chandra Garg believes that the government can ultimately approve 1.92 fitment factor.

That is, at present there are different demands from different parties, but the final decision will be taken only after the recommendations of the government and the 8th Pay Commission.

When will the 8th Pay Commission be implemented?
Let us tell you that the Central Government had announced the 8th Pay Commission on 17 January 2025. It has been considered effective from January 1, 2026. However, the commission has got 18 months to submit its report. Therefore the report is expected to come by mid-2027. After this, after getting the approval of the Union Cabinet, the benefit of actual salary increase can be available in mid-2027 or early 2028.

Meetings being held in different cities

The 8th Pay Commission has recently held talks with the employee organizations of Uttarakhand. Now the schedule of further meetings has also been decided. The meeting is going to be held in Delhi between 28th and 30th April. In May, the Commission team will also meet other organizations of Pune and Maharashtra and collect their suggestions and feedback.

Demand for change in basic salary and allowances

• Pay Commission is considering not only basic salary but also TA, HRA and other facilities. Employees believe that improvement in these allowances is necessary.
• Along with this, demand for increase in basic pay has also been made by many employee organizations. In which it has been proposed to increase the minimum salary from Rs 18,000 to approximately Rs 69,000.

Demand to increase fitment factor

Under the 8th Pay Commission, the drafting committee of the Joint Forum of Employees Organizations (NC-JCM) has demanded to increase the fitment factor. So that there can be a big change in the salary structure.

According to the organization, the fitment factor should be increased to 3.833. If the central government accepts these suggestions, there will be a huge increase in the salaries of the employees.

Dearness Allowance (DA): about 30.9%
HRA: about 15.4%
Transport Allowance: about 2.2%

Appointment of new director in 8th Pay Commission

Under the orders of the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), this important responsibility has been entrusted to Krishna VR, a senior officer of 2009 batch of Indian Railway Accounts Service (IRAS). Government gave information

Union Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary informed in the Rajya Sabha that the government will review the conditions of salary, allowances and pension of employees and pensioners under the 8th Pay Commission. He further said that the commission will present its recommendations as per the stipulated time limit.

Let us tell you that the Commission has been given 18 months time to submit its report. This clearly shows that the commission will submit its report to the government in the year 2027. The Confederation of Central Government Employees and Workers (CCGEW) has announced a one-day strike across the country on 12 February 2026. The major demands of the organizations include 20 percent interim relief, adding 50 percent dearness allowance to the basic salary and implementing the Old Pension Scheme (OPS) by abolishing NPS. Employees organizations will take to the streets tomorrow with these demands.

8th Pay Commission: These days, a message is becoming increasingly viral on many social media apps like WhatsApp, in which it is being claimed that under the Finance Act 2025, the benefits of increase in Dearness Allowance (DA) and pay commission to retired government employees will stop.
