Ahemdabad air india flight crash: In the Rajya Sabha on Monday, Minister of State for Civil Aviation Muralidhar Mohol said that in the last six months, a total of 9 cause notices have been issued to Air India due to 5 separate security violations. Action on a violation has been completed. A few seconds after flying from Ahmedabad Airport on 12 June 2025, the flight of Air India, going to London, crashed. The aircraft fell on a medical hostel building, killing 241 out of 242 passengers, as well as many people on the ground were killed.

AAIB gave preliminary report
Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) released a preliminary report of the accident on 12 July. The report said that soon after the takeoff, the fuel switches of both engines were closed. In the black box recording, a pilot asks the other-“Why did you cut?”, I got the answer-“I did not.”

No negative reports
The Minister of State said that the credibility report of the accident aircraft did not see any negative trend in the last six months. Despite this, the entire investigation of the accident is being done by AAIB under Rule 11.

Union aviation minister raging on Western media
Ram Mohan Naidu said that the coverage of Air India Crash may have vested interests of Western media. He further said that the government will wait for the final investigation report. Criticizing Western Media, he appreciated the Aaib to decode the black box and appealed to the world not to draw a hurry.

Naidu said that this is the first time that the country did not need to send the black box to another country, as its lab has been set up to analyze flight data and cockpit recording. He was referring to the new facility established for analysis of aircraft flight data and cockpit recording at AAIB headquarters in Delhi in April.

Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu said on Sunday (July 20, 2025) that the government should wait for the final report before reaching any conclusion in the aircraft accident in Ahmedabad.

Kinjarapu said, ‘I have full faith in the Bureau of Accident Investigation (AAIB) and their work. He has done a commendable job of decoding the entire black box and providing data in India itself. Along with this, Kinjarapu targeted the Western media and said that there may be some wrong intention in the kind of articles that such media is publishing.

Black box is sent abroad for data

He further said that whenever the black box was found to be damaged in plane accidents, it was always sent abroad to get the data, but this is the first time that AAIB decoded everything here. This is a big success for the country of India.

Minister Kinjarapu said that it would be wrong to draw any conclusions before the investigation and there should be no comment on it. Whatever steps have to be taken in terms of security, we are fully prepared for it.

What was revealed in the first report?

A total of 260 people died in the Air India aircraft accident on 12 June 2025 and AAIB is investigating it. Aircraft number AI-171 going from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick collided with a building immediately after flying. Now only after receiving the final report of AAIB, it will be revealed how this big accident happened with the aircraft.

According to the preliminary inquiry report, a few seconds before the crash, the fuel control switches of both engines of the aircraft were closed. Preliminary investigation reports of 15 pages of the accident revealed that the fuel control switches of both engines were cut off from ‘run’ within a second, due to which the aircraft suddenly started coming down.

The Federation of Indian Pilots (FIP) have issued a legal notice to both these media institutions, accusing the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) and Reuters of running misleading news regarding the initial investigation report of the Air India Flight AI-171 accident. FIP Chairman Captain CS Randhawa said on Saturday (July 19, 2025) that these reports have no factual basis and have damaged the image of the pilots. More than 250 people died in the AI-171 aircraft accident. The case is being investigated by India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB).

Captain Randhawa said in a conversation with ANI, “I blame WSJ completely. They conclude and spread all over the world. Are they a investigating agency? When nothing has been written in the report, how can they make the results from themselves?” He also said that the reports are blaming the pilots incorrectly, while there is no such conclusion in the initial report.

‘Ask for apologizes WSJ and Reuters’- FIP

FIP has demanded WSJ and Reuters to publicly apologize and clarify about their reporting. Captain Randhawa said, “We have clearly said that if they do not apologize and do not give clarification, then we will take further legal action.”

NTSB also objected

The US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) chairwoman Jennifer Homendi has also described the media reports as a hurry and estimate based. He said that such a big investigation process takes time and everyone should wait till the results of the official investigation of AAIB. The FIP president welcomed the NTSB’s statement and said that this would put an end to the baseless allegations being made on Indian pilots.

Aaib air india plane crash report: On the ongoing investigation on the Air India aircraft accident, the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) issued a statement on Thursday, saying that the investigation is still not complete, so it is too early to reach any conclusion. The bureau has said that the final report will be made public on time with the real causes and necessary recommendations of the accident.

Technical and public interest will be given from time to time
Aaib said that technical aspects and important information related to public interest will be released from time to time, but the media should wait for the official inquiry report and avoid reporting without confirmation.

Honor the sensitivity of the families of the dead
Aaib also emphasized in its statement that the sentiments of passengers killed in the plane crash, crew members and family members of the people who lost their lives should be respected.

Priyanka Chaturvedi on Air India Plane Crash: Shiv Sena leader and Rajya Sabha MP Priyanka Chaturvedi wrote a letter to Civil Aviation Minister Kinnajarpu Rammohan Naidu, raising a serious objection to the interim report released by the Air India Flight AI171 accident on the Air India Flight AI171 accident. He questioned how this report reached international media, especially The Wall Street Journal before being officially released in India.

It is wrong to convict dead pilot: Chaturvedi
Priyanka said, “I was not surprised at all that the report has completely convicted the pilot who has lost his life in this accident and can not present his side now.” He also alleged that a clean chit has been given to the three big companies, while she was responsible for the safety of passengers.

Demand for investigation and transparency of report leaks
Chaturvedi demanded in the letter that the report should be formally investigated by the report, the identity of the author of the report should be made public and the names and signature reports of all the members of the inquiry panel should be shown in the report. He said that the report was released “quietly” late at night, no press briefing was done nor there was transparency in conclusions.

Objection of pilot organizations also registered
He informed that pilot organizations have also objected to the investigation process. He says that there was no experienced aviator in the investigation team. Pilots’ organizations voluntarily offered to join as a technical supervisor to maintain fairness and technical accuracy.

Accused of tarnishing the image of pilot from media leaks
Priyanka Chaturvedi said that by leaking selected parts of the report, the image of the late pilot is being deliberately damaged, which is “condemnable”. He demanded from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting that a clear guideline should be made for media coverage of reports of agencies like AAIB.

Need to raise voice against ‘Narrator’
Chaturvedi wrote, “AI171 cannot be made mute spectators in the crashed and its report that is being made mute spectators. It is a matter of serious concern for public safety, pilot morale and India’s global aviation image.”

What was mentioned in AAIB report
Initial report of 15 pages released by Aaib on Saturday said that the fuel control switches of both engines of the aircraft went from ‘run’ to ‘cutoff’ in a few seconds of the flight. This rapidly lost height and collided with a building, killing 260 people, including 241 passengers.

Indications from cockpit recording, not technical fault
The reports did not identify the pilots, but in the cockpit voice recording, one pilot asks the other why he cut the fuel, while the other refuses it. The report also said that no technical fault was found in the aircraft, causing the pilot error to be considered a possible reason.

Pilots Association also expressed disagreement
Airline Pilots Association of India has objected to the AAIB report. He said that the investigation has been “immersed in privacy” and is biased against the pilot. The report has been prepared in a hurry and the conclusions are prejudiced.

Air India Plane Crash: There is deep concern in the pilot community about the preliminary investigation report of the AI-171 aircraft accident. Air Safety Expert Captain Amit Singh, while questioning the credibility of the report, said that it is not clear at what time the engine stopped working.

According to the report, 08:08:42 Fuel control switch was ‘cut off’ after UTC, but in the same report, Ram Air Turbine (RAT) has been said to be active soon after the takeoff. He said that a simple, initial report based on facts would have been sufficient, but this report is creating doubt and confusion.

“Who shut down the fuel control switch?” -ALPA-I President
Captain Sam Thomas, president of the airline pilots Association of India (ALPA-I), said that it is a very shocking thing that there was a discussion among the pilots in the cockpit that ‘Who shut down the fuel control switch’. He also questioned why the Emergency Locator Transmitter (ELT) did not work after the accident. Sam Thomas expressed concern over the absence of an authorized signature on the report and the confidentiality of the investigation process. He reiterated that qualified and experienced pilots should be included in the investigation as a minimum observer, so that transparency and accountability remains.

“Pilot deliberately shut fuel” – Captain Ranganathan
Former Boeing 737 Commander and Instructor Captain Mohan Ranganathan claimed that the pilot deliberately shut down the fuel control switch. He said that first the right and then the left engine failed a few seconds, which is clear that the switches were closed one after the other. He described the report as ‘vague’ and termed its interpretation as suspicious.

“Boeing’s silence does not mean system” – Senior Commander
A senior Boeing commander said on the condition of anonymity that arguing that the pilot was the fuel cut off because Boeing did not issue any warning – this argument is wrong. He said that there is no proof of the security of the system, not issuing warnings by any company. Many times the serious design flaws have been accepted only when many accidents have happened. Giving the example of the Lion Air accident of Boeing 737 Max in 2018, he said that the pilots were first convicted at that time.

Air India Plane Crash Report: Air India flight AI171 left for London from Ahmedabad on the morning of 12 June 2024. The flight was being operated by Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft. Shortly after the take-off, the aircraft collided with a medical college hostel, killing 260 passengers on the spot. This accident is not only one of the largest aircraft tragedies in India, but it is also considered to be the first fatal accident of Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner all over the world.

Now the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has released a preliminary report of its 15 pages on this incident, which has revealed many important information related to the accident, but some secrets are still intact.

Both engines closed immediately after take-off!
According to the AAIB report, the fuel control switches of the two engines suddenly went from “Run” to “Cutoff”, 7 seconds after the aircraft take-off, which stopped fueling both engines. This entire process took place within a second. Due to this, the thrust of the engine went completely and the aircraft could not catch the height. It has been reported in the report that the pilots immediately tried to turn the engine again, understanding the situation.

Both switches were brought back to “run” and one of them also turned on, but by then it was too late. The aircraft crashed only 32 seconds after the take-off. In the cockpit voice recorder, a pilot was recorded asking the other, “Why did you cut fuel?”, I got the answer, “I did not.” But it was not clear which voice was from which pilot.

The aircraft was in a state of flying and pilots were also experienced
The report states that the aircraft was completely aircraft (flight). All necessary technical inspections were done before the take-off. Captain Sumit Sabharwal had a 15,000 -hour flight experience, with 8,600 hours at Boeing 787. He was accompanied by the first officer Clive Kunder in the flight, who also had 3,400 hours of experience. Both passed the pre-flight breath analyzer test and their presence in CCTV was also clearly visible.

The report also stated that FAA had issued a warning in the year 2018, in which the fuel control switch in Boeing aircraft had said that the locking mechanism was a possible failure. But this was not mandatory, only advice, so no action was taken on it.

Was it an electronic disturbance?
A big question is how the two fuel switches suddenly stopped together? Was it a pilot’s fault or any technical disturbance? Some aviation experts have feared that this may be due to malfunction in the MN4 microprocessor of the engine’s electronic control unit (ECU). A joint service bulletin released in 2021 by FAA and GE also identified the solder-ball fatigue of this microprocessor as a possible threat.

Due to this fatigue, the switches can be tripped on the cutoff automatically, which can suddenly stop, as in this accident.

Which questions are answered?
According to the report, the landing gear was not up during the take-off. It is possible that the pilot was busy dealing with the engine failure at that time and forgot to give a “gear up” call. In addition, there is no video recording of the cockpit, making it difficult to know who really changed the switch. Many experts have expressed concern over this and have demanded video recording in the future cockpit.

The report also stated that the Emergency Locator Transmitter (ELT) did not send any distress signal, while it had an impact of 3.2 to 3.5g at the time of the accident – which is usually sufficient to trigger the signal.

Investigation team and final report
Some pilot organizations questioned the expertise of the Aaib’s investigation team. In response, Aaib clarified that the team includes pilots, engineers, aviation medicine experts and flight recording experts, who are investigating the matter deeply.

Aaib has said that the final detailed report will be released by 12 June 2026. Till then, no clear conclusions have been drawn and no new security advice has been issued for 787-8 or GE GENX-1B engine operators.
