Talking to IANS, Abhishek Banerjee said that he has always liked Om Puri very much. He told that the kind of characters Om Puri played in his career and the path he chose was no less than a real hero. Om Puri never paid attention to how big the role was but focused on how to play the character. Abhishek said that he adopted the same thinking in his cameo role also.

A story of pain, revenge and surrender to Gandhi
In the series ‘Freedom at Midnight’, Abhishek’s character is of a man who loses his pregnant wife in communal violence. After this pain, his character is filled with the feeling of revenge but as the story progresses, it takes him to surrender before Mahatma Gandhi. This story is not limited to just one person’s sorrow but also brings to the fore the religious and social complexities of the time of partition of India and Pakistan.

Connection with the film ‘Gandhi’ and Om Puri’s character
This character also has historical importance because its spirit matches the role of Om Puri which he played in the 1982 film ‘Gandhi’. Ben Kingsley played the lead role in this film and it was directed by Richard Attenborough. Abhishek told that when director Nikhil offered him this role, he immediately said yes because he believes that the real spirit of the industry is that an artiste should get a chance to play all types of roles.

Big impact of small role and people’s praise
Abhishek clearly said that it is not possible to compare him with Om Puri because Om Puri is an icon of cinema. Following his footsteps is a great honor in itself. He also said that sometimes small roles leave the deepest impact and after the release of ‘Freedom at Midnight 2’, he received a lot of praise from people on social media. After meeting the delegation of Trinamool Congress (TMC), the Central Election Commission (ECI) has given many important instructions and strong messages regarding the election process in West Bengal. The Election Commission asked the Mamata Banerjee led state government of West Bengal to immediately release the increased honorarium approved by the Commission to all the booth level officers i.e. BLOs. The Commission stressed that the employees engaged in electoral work should get their rights on time, so that the voter list and other electoral processes can be conducted smoothly.

During the meeting with the TMC delegation, the Election Commission said that keeping in mind the convenience of voters, polling centers will also be set up in high-rise buildings, gated communities and slum areas. The Commission believes that this will ensure maximum voter participation and will help in increasing the voting percentage.

Election Commission’s stern warning to TMC

With this, the Election Commission issued a stern warning to the Trinamool Congress (TMC), saying, ‘The party should ensure that its grassroots political representatives or workers do not indulge in threatening or intimidating any employee deployed on election duty, be they BLO, ERO, AERO or observer.’ The Commission said in clear words, ‘Incident of intimidation against any election worker will not be tolerated under any circumstances. Political temperature has started rising in Bengal. On Wednesday, Trinamool Congress National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee had a two and a half hour meeting with the Election Commission on the issue of SIR. He said, ‘The answers to the five questions asked last time have not been received. No response was received except on two or three issues. The names of 1 crore 36 lakh people are in doubt, we asked questions about them, but their list has not been given yet.

He said, ‘If someone is above 60 years of age and is ill, instead of calling him to the Election Commission office, verification can also be done by going to his home. The allegation being made by BJP is that there are 1 crore Rohingyas and Bangladeshis, out of the 58 lakh names that are being removed, how many Bangladeshis and Rohingyas are there? An answer has been sought.

He said, ‘The names which are being removed without asking ERO. The question was asked that the name of the person who did not fill the form should be deleted, but how is the name of the person who filled the form being deleted?

‘The one who knows how to conduct elections is stealing the voter list’

Abhishek Banerjee said, ‘Whoever knows how to conduct elections is stealing from the voter list. There is theft in the voter list. If Congress had caught this then BJP would have lost in Haryana, Maharashtra, Delhi and Bihar. The government runs through government circulars and notifications, but the Indian government wants to run India through WhatsApp.

He said, ‘The Election Commission wants to run the country through the Election Commission. They do not want to issue any notification because they know that after doing so, all political parties have the right to take it to court and challenge it.

‘We did not get accurate answers to our questions’

He said, ‘We discussed eight to ten issues. The meeting started at 12 noon and lasted for about two and a half hours. Last time, about a month ago on November 28, a 10-member delegation of our party had come here. We had asked five questions to the Election Commission, but we did not get an accurate answer to even one of them. The same night the Election Commission selectively leaked information to some journalists and claimed that they had answered every question. Immediately after this, I had tweeted saying that Trinamool Congress has digital evidence and the Election Commission had not answered any of our questions.

He said, ‘This time too we did not get any clarity on any issue except two-three points. When I ask him about SIR, he diverts the conversation to the issue of citizenship. No concrete answer was found on any question. He was talking to us by pointing fingers, I said you are nominated and we are elected.

He asked, ‘After the draft list, we have come to know that 89% of the people have been mapped. Who is responsible for the mentality of demeaning Bengal?

‘Gyanesh Kumar was sent to destroy the country’

Before becoming the Chief Election Commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar was the Cooperative Secretary in the Cooperative Ministry. Suddenly he is made the Chief Election Commissioner, he was sent here so that he can ruin the country. Can destroy this constitutional institution.

‘Amit Shah also targeted’

During this, Abhishek Banerjee also targeted Home Minister Amit Shah. I would ask all the opposition parties to take this issue seriously, the votes are not being stolen from the EVMs, they are being stolen from the voter list.

‘You won’t have to take to the streets just to be seen on TV’

On the question of ABP News alleging Rahul Gandhi’s vote theft, Abhishek Banerjee said that if you want to raise the issue then you will have to take to the streets and your workers will have to work. Nothing is achieved just by appearing on TV and making allegations, if you keep saying anything while sitting on TV then it will not stop vote theft. When the final voter list comes and there are irregularities in it, the fight will not end there, then we will take the fight forward legally.

Jana adapts to herself everywhere and it seems as if she is a part of this universe. Abhishek also played the role of Jana in the recently released Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna’s film ‘Thamaa’.

Trinamool Congress on Friday (31 October 2025) warned that legal action and mass agitation would be taken if the names of genuine voters were removed during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list in West Bengal. Addressing around 15,000 party officials from Bengal, Trinamool Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee accused the BJP of using the process to quietly rig the upcoming elections.

Preparations for rigging at the behest of BJP: TMC

According to sources, Abhishek Banerjee alleged that the SIR announced on October 27 is being done at the behest of BJP to manipulate the voter list before the upcoming assembly elections.

TMC sources quoted Abhishek Banerjee as saying, “As you all know, SIR was announced in Bengal on October 27 on the instructions of BJP. After the announcement of voter list revision in Bihar, we had said that this means silent rigging. Trinamool has opposed it in Parliament, court and on the streets and we will continue to do so.

Giving a stern warning earlier this week, Abhishek Banerjee had said, “If the name of even one genuine voter is removed from the voter list, one lakh people of Bengal will stage a protest outside the Election Commission office in New Delhi.”

‘An atmosphere of fear in Bengal due to SIR process’

State President Subrata Bakshi also addressed this meeting called by Abhishek Banerjee on Friday. The purpose of the meeting was to prepare the party’s strategy to monitor the voter list revision. District, block and booth level Trinamool officials were among those invited.

Addressing the meeting, Abhishek Banerjee alleged that due to the SIR process an atmosphere of fear has been created in the entire state. The leaders present at the meeting quoted Abhishek Banerjee as saying, “We will not remain silent if the names of real voters are removed.” We will draw the attention of the court and also start a big movement in Delhi to ensure justice.

Party sources said that Abhishek Banerjee directed all the leaders to be alert and claimed that the names of thousands of real voters have been found missing in many areas, especially in North 24 Parganas, Nadia and Cooch Behar districts.

A senior Trinamool official said, “Regarding the voter list irregularities that we had exposed in Wednesday’s press conference, Abhishek Banerjee said that we will also draw the attention of the court. This is not just a political issue, but a democratic issue.

Shubham Vardhan has become his brother and his work is very tremendous, Abhishek is a bit soft, add his hands to the police to leave Shubham but Shubham is a prisoner of law. Mia Maelzer has done amazing work in the character of Jhupa. Seeing them, he felt why talented people get so little chance and why many non -talented actors in the industry are imposed on us. Apart from these, all the rest of the actors are amazing

Karan Tejpal, Gaurav Dhingra and Swapnil Salkar have written the film and Karan Tejpal has directed, and he showed that if the brother has taken money from the producer, he has given the work. The hold on the film is amazing, writing is fantastic and the film does not give you a chance to blink.
