ChatGPT vs Medical AI In Healthcare: The use of Artificial Intelligence among doctors is continuously increasing in India. Many doctors are now resorting to AI tools for medical research, preparing clinical notes, explaining the disease to patients and getting help in treatment decisions. However, experts say that there is a big risk associated with this increasing use, because many doctors are using generic AI chatbots that are not designed to make medical decisions.

According to the Clinician of the Future 2026 report by scientific publication organization Elsevier, 48 percent of doctors and clinicians surveyed in India are using AI in their work. Of these, 54 percent doctors frequently use general AI tools like ChatGPT and cloud, while only 26 percent doctors regularly use specialized AI platforms based on medical research and clinical data. The same situation was seen among nurses, where the use of general AI was found to be higher than that of specialized medical AI.

Is there any problem with this?

Dr. Rahul Goyal, lead clinical executive and physician at Elsevier, says that general AI tools take information from different sources available on the internet, which may sometimes include unproven or non-scientific information. In contrast, medical AI platforms are based on proven medical books, research journals, and clinical guidelines. If sufficient scientific evidence for a question is not available, such platforms provide this information clearly, rather than generating answers based on guesswork.

Dr. Goyal said that when doctors are deciding the treatment or disease of a patient, even a small mistake can have serious consequences. If a doctor relies on the wrong advice of a general AI, the legal responsibility will lie not with the AI ​​but with the doctor. He called it a situation of liability sink, in which the ultimate accountability always rests with the doctor.

2,757 health workers from 118 countries were included in the report. Of these, maximum 426 doctors and 112 paramedics were included from India. Indian doctors are using AI the most in medical research, obtaining new information, finding drug information, educating patients, clinical decision support and documentation.

Experts believe that AI cannot replace doctors, but if used properly, it can improve the quality of treatment. Especially in a large country like India, where the availability of expert doctors is not uniform everywhere, certified medical AI can help ensure better treatment even in small towns and rural areas. According to the report, Indian doctors will be more likely to trust AI systems that are easy to use, verified by independent experts, provide reliable context with their answers, are trained to avoid harm, and draw information from multiple high-quality medical sources.

Experts believe that AI can become a good assistant to doctors, but the final decision should always be taken keeping in mind the doctor’s experience, clinical understanding and the actual condition of the patient. The responsibility for confidentiality and safe treatment of patients will ultimately remain with the doctor.
