The name of PCOS, which has been in use for years, is now being changed to PMOS. Experts believe that the old name did not properly reflect the full seriousness of this disease and its widespread impact on the body. In fact, it is believed that this is not just a problem related to ovaries, but a dangerous condition related to hormonal, metabolic, mental and reproductive health.

For this reason, medical experts at the global level have decided on its new name. According to AIIMS doctors, the purpose of this change is to make both women and doctors understand that this disease is not limited to the ovaries only during periods, but it can affect many parts of the body.

After all, what is PCOS or PMOS?

In this situation, androgen hormone starts being produced in excess in women. Due to this, periods become more irregular. Hair starts growing on the face, acne may increase, weight increases rapidly and many women face problems in pregnancy. Till now the name PCOS was used because small grain-like structures were visible around the ovaries in ultrasound, which were mistaken for cysts. However, doctors say that these are not real cysts, but incompletely developed follicles. Under normal conditions, every month many follicles are formed in the ovary, one of which develops completely and releases the egg. But in this problem the follicles stop midway and are not able to develop completely. These are visible as small spheres in ultrasound.

Why was it necessary to change the name?

According to experts, the name PCOS creates confusion in many cases. Cysts are not visible in many women, yet they have this problem. This delays the diagnosis of the disease and patients are also unable to understand it properly. The new term PMOS indicates that this is not just a problem related to the ovaries, but a condition affecting the entire body. At this time, along with hormonal imbalance, metabolic problems are also involved.

How does it affect the body?

According to the doctor, this problem can increase the risk of obesity, blood sugar, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, bad cholesterol, fatty liver and heart-related diseases in women. Apart from this, the problem of ovulation in many women increases the risk of infertility, pregnancy complications and endometrial cancer. It also affects mental health. Problems like depression, anxiety, lack of confidence, eating disorders are also considered to be related to it. Its symptoms are also visible on skin and hair. Excessive hair growth on the face, hair fall and persistent acne are considered its common signs.

What can be the change in treatment and investigation?

The doctor says that at present only the name of this disease has changed, the process of treatment and diagnosis will not change immediately. But the new name will help women understand that this disease is not limited to periods only. After this, after examining the patient, the doctor will pay more attention not only to problems related to formula or reproduction, but also to blood sugar, blood pressure, cholesterol and other metabolic problems.
