Israeli government spokesman Shosh Bedrosian said Thursday, “We will not allow Hezbollah to re-arm, to organize, to increase its strength to threaten Israel.” The attack came as Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam and his government were meeting in Beirut to hammer out a plan to disarm Hezbollah and other non-governmental armed groups in the country.

US President Donald Trump has warned that if large-scale killing of Christians continues in Nigeria, America may deploy troops there or conduct airstrikes. Trump told reporters on Air Force One while returning from Florida on Sunday night that he had instructed the Department of Defense (which he called the Department of War) to be prepared for possible rapid military action.

Trump said, “They are killing Christians in record numbers in Nigeria and we will not let that happen. It will end.” When asked whether American troops could land or there would be an airstrike, he said, “It is possible. I am considering several options.”

Trump had threatened to stop aid

Earlier on Friday, Trump had threatened to stop American aid to Nigeria and had said that if the Nigerian government is unable to protect its Christian community, then America can take direct action with guns-a-blazing. He said, “Christianity in Nigeria is facing an existential crisis and radical Islamic groups are responsible for this.”

This warning of Trump has come after the announcement in which America has again included Nigeria in the list of countries which are violating religious freedom. Countries like China, Russia, Pakistan, North Korea, Myanmar are also included in this list.

Nigeria responded

The Nigerian government has said that it welcomes US help against terrorism, but will not compromise its sovereignty and territorial integrity. Daniel Bwala, an adviser to President Bola Tinubu, said, “We welcome American help, provided it respects our borders and independence.” He also said that Trump’s statement should not be taken too seriously because Trump thinks well of Nigeria.

Nigeria has been in the grip of violence for years

Nigeria has been facing attacks from Islamic terrorist groups Boko Haram and ISWAP for the last several years. At the same time, increasing conflicts between farmers and herders in the northern and central regions of the country have also deepened religious and ethnic tensions. Ravina Shamdasani, a spokeswoman for Turki’s office, echoed the statement of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights at a regular UN briefing on Friday, saying, “These attacks and their growing humanitarian toll are unacceptable. The United States must stop such attacks and take all necessary steps to stop the extrajudicial killing of people aboard these boats.”

‘Air strikes violate international human rights law’

“The Turks believe that air strikes by the United States against boats in the Caribbean and Pacific violate international human rights law,” he said. According to news agency Xinhua, UN chief’s spokesman Stephane Dujarric told the daily briefing that the Secretary General reiterated Volcker’s point and said that international standards should be followed in these operations.

This 2640 km long international border, called the Durand Line, has been a cause of conflict between the two countries for decades.

The Durand Line is a line drawn in 1893 that forms the border between present-day Pakistan and Afghanistan. It was built by British officer Sir Henry Durand under an agreement with the then Afghan ruler Abdur Rahman Khan. The objective of the British was to create a buffer zone between India (then British India) and Afghanistan so that Russia’s expansionist policy could be stopped. This line passes through Pashtun and Baloch tribal areas, due to which the families of these communities were divided between two countries. This is what makes this border the most controversial.

Why doesn’t Afghanistan agree?

Afghanistan could never officially recognize this line. He says that this is a forcibly imposed border of the colonial period, which was decided without taking the opinion of the local tribes. The Durand Line affected the Pashtun community the most. They had been living in the border areas for centuries, but now their families and tribes were divided between the two countries. According to Afghanistan, the British drew this line according to their political and military needs, and not keeping in mind the interests of the people. This is the reason why even today this border hurts the sentiments of the Afghan people.

Why did tension increase after the arrival of Taliban?

After the Taliban came to power in 2021, Pakistan hoped that a “friendly government” would be formed in Kabul which would recognize the Durand Line, but the opposite happened. The Taliban described this line as a violation of Afghanistan’s sovereignty and accused Pakistan of trying to forcibly determine the border by erecting a fence in this area. Since then, there have been several border clashes between the Taliban and the Pakistani army. Taliban-backed terrorist organization TTP (Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan) has also been carrying out attacks in Pakistan, due to which the tension has deepened.

According to the former Vice President of Afghanistan, the Taliban has about 80 thousand fighters, while the Afghan army has 5 to 6 lakh soldiers. Despite this, the Taliban continues to dominate the Afghan army. The strength of Taliban lies in its tribal roots and religious networks. Madrassas, fundamentalist religious organizations and tribal support have strengthened the Taliban at the grassroots level. Apart from this, the secret help of Pakistani Army and ISI has also played a big role in the emergence of Taliban as a military force. This is the reason why now the same Taliban is opening a front against Pakistan.
