On 26 February 2026, students at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) tried to take out a ‘long march’ towards the Education Ministry. The march was mainly against the alleged casteist statements of Vice Chancellor Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit, who in a recent podcast called for ‘permanent victimhood’ regarding UGC’s equity regulations, which students considered derogatory against Dalits and backward classes.

Also, the students were demanding implementation of UGC’s Equity (Anti-Discrimination) Regulations, enactment of the proposed ‘Rohit Vemula Act’ and resignation of the VC. To stop the march, heavy police force was deployed at the main gate, where several layers of barricades were installed. The students allege that the police lathi-charged, dragged the female students and indulged in brutality.

Police gave information – protesters had attacked

At the same time, Delhi Police says that the protesters broke barricades, threw sticks and shoes, attacked officers and even bit some policemen. Both sides suffered injuries in the confrontation—police said several of their soldiers were injured, while students also reported several injuries.

The incident started around 3:20 pm, when students started coming out of the main gate. The police stopped them at the North Gate and pushed them back into the campus. In videos viral on social media, male policemen are seen dragging female students, while in the footage shared by the police, students are seen confronting the officers.

By evening, some students were taken to Vasant Kunj North and Kapashera police stations and an FIR was registered at Vasant Kunj North police station under sections 221, 121(1), 132 and 3(5) of the Indian Code of Justice (BNS). Police say that the protesters did not have permission to march, so action was necessary. JNUSU has called it an ‘attack on democracy’.

Court granted bail to all 14 students

The next day of this incident, on February 27, the Patiala House Court granted bail to the 14 arrested students on a bond of Rs 25,000 and rejected the police’s demand for judicial custody. However, the court set the condition of checking the permanent address of the students, to which the student organizations objected.

AISA leader accuses police of assault

Former JNUSU president and All India Students Association (AISA) leader Dhananjay, while talking to ABP News, described the police action as ‘retaliatory’. He said, “On 26th, everyone knows how the students were brutally beaten and detained and taken to different police stations. Then they were arrested. Delhi Police’s argument in the court was so weak that the court called it ‘unacceptable’.”

Dhananjay further said that many students are badly injured. The police beat them brutally, tore their clothes and specifically targeted the students carrying the picture of Baba Saheb Bhimrao Ambedkar. “It clearly shows that Delhi Police is not interested in filing FIR, but in taking revenge.” He also raised questions on the condition of the jail: “Basic facilities are not being provided in the jail. There are no medicines, medical treatment. Even bedsheets and clothes are not being provided.”

Vice Chancellor also targeted

Dhananjay also targeted the VC, “The Vice Chancellor made fun of Dalit oppression. He called UGC’s regulation based on the Rohith Vemula Act, which is meant to prevent discrimination on campus, as ‘unnecessary and irrational’.”

Now student organizations are preparing for the fight ahead. Dhananjay said that he is appealing to the Chief Justice of Delhi High Court to look into the matter and release the students. “On March 1, we are going to the judge again. Remove the clause that has been imposed and grant bail to the students. Our lawyers Abhik Chimni and Ayush Srivastava are appealing on this. These are well-educated students and do not deserve to stay in jail.”

What did the JNU administration say?

The JNU administration has accused JNUSU of ‘vandalism and violence on campus’ and said that the union has ignored the main issues. At present, Delhi Police investigation is going on in this matter.

Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), one of the prestigious universities of India, is known for academic excellence, but its relationship with controversies also often remains in the headlines. There have been many recent incidents in which this university has turned into a battlefield overnight.

The latest incident occurred on February 22 when the situation became tense late night on the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus when violence broke out between left-wing and right-wing student groups during a protest march. Both groups have blamed each other for the violence. According to the students, several students were injured in alleged stone pelting after the clash. But this is not the first time that something like this has happened in JNU. Let us see what happened from the year 2020 till now.

There was an uproar over the protest against CAA in the year 2020!

In January 2020, on the night of January 5, masked attackers entered the campus and attacked students and teachers, in which about 40 people were injured. Let us tell you that this attack took place when a group of teachers was discussing increasing the campus fees. This was the reason why this incident was seen in connection with the campus fee hike and the ongoing protests against CAA in those days. At the same time, different student organizations kept blaming each other.

In January 2024, more than four students were injured in a clash over election committee selection and eight ABVP members were fined ₹19,000 each in connection with the 2024 violence, which the organization alleged was a nexus between the administration and the student union.

Controversy over biometric system in 2025!

In the year 2025 also, many controversies came to light, including conflict over Dussehra event, MoU with Siddhant Knowledge Foundation, protest against biometric system and rustication of 5 student leaders after vandalism in the library.

The Left Front won key posts in the student union elections in November 2025, while the administration filed a police complaint in January 2026 after programs and controversial slogans on the anniversary of the 2020 attacks. Most of the incidents in JNU have been related to the ideological conflict and administrative decisions of the Left and Right student organizations, where despite investigation and disciplinary action, the incidents of confrontation have not stopped.

Let us tell you that the names of student organizations ABVP, JNSU, AISA, SFI are involved in these controversies. Controversies start between these organizations in matters of allegations and counter-allegations and also fade away with time. But the question arises whether no law and order can be implemented in such big institutions.. Shouldn’t research, study and intellectual discussion be the priority of the students studying in an institution like JNU which has the tag of a university? The incidents that are continuously coming to light indicate that such disputes are not going to stop without setting a clear framework for communication, accountability and administrative strictness among student organizations.

With the intention of eliminating discrimination in higher education institutions, UGC has implemented the new Equity Rules of 2026. Student organizations have considered this a positive step, but at the same time the debate has also intensified whether these rules will remain just paper reforms or will they actually provide justice to the marginalized students.

The objective of the University Grants Commission (Promotion of Equality in Higher Education Institutions) Rules, 2026, issued on January 13, is said to be to prevent discrimination on the basis of religion, caste, sex, place of birth or disability. All India Students Association (AISA) has welcomed these guidelines, but the organization says that these rules did not come suddenly, but are the result of years of pressure from student movements and institutional failures.

Student deaths revealed layers of the system

AISA President Neha and General Secretary Prasenjit said that cases like Rohit Vemula, Payal Tadvi and Darshan Solanki highlighted how deeply caste oppression exists in universities. These incidents also proved that the UGC guidelines of 2012 were not effective at the ground level. According to AISA, the new rules are a forced move following social anger and judicial interventions.

Inclusion of OBC, an important but late step

In the rules of 2026, backward class i.e. OBC has also been brought under the ambit of equality and security. Student organizations consider this a constitutionally necessary and welcome change. He says that till now the discrimination against backward castes has been continuously ignored at the legal and institutional level.

EOC expansion and new arrangements

The role of Equal Opportunity Centers (EOC) has been made broader than ever before in the rules. Now these will not be just advisory units, but arrangements like Equity Committee, 24-hour Equity Helpline, Equity Squad and Equity Ambassador have also been proposed to investigate complaints.

Conflict of interest hidden in the structure

AISA alleges that the rules did not make it mandatory that the EOC coordinator or the chairperson of the equity committee be from a marginalized community. On the contrary, the head of the institute has been made the ex-officio chairperson. Due to this, the real power once again gets confined in the hands of the head of the institution and questions are raised on impartiality.

Still fog on representation

The situation regarding representation of SC, ST, OBC and women in the Equity Committee is not clear. Be it faculty or students, the terms of representation are said to be vague and incomplete, which casts doubt on the effectiveness of the committee.

Definition of discrimination, shield for the powerful

The definition of discrimination in the rules has been kept very broad and abstract. The lack of reference to any concrete action or example leaves institutions free to interpret it arbitrarily. Critics believe that this blurring can become a way to avoid accountability.

Statistics that raise concerns

UGC data itself shows that between 2019 and 2024, there has been a 118 percent increase in complaints of caste-based discrimination in higher education institutions. AISA calls this a result of the caste structure created at the institutional and state level.

Student organizations believe that although the coming of rules is positive, it is a step taken too late. Without major and concrete reforms, these guidelines may remain mere cosmetic progressivism, which may appear strong on paper but prove weak in practice.

AISA demands, accountability along with rules is necessary

Welcoming the UGC Equity Regulations, 2026, AISA has demanded that necessary amendments should be made in it soon. The organization says that without real accountability, meaningful representation and real protection for marginalized communities, these rules will not be able to fulfill their purpose.

Iran’s Ambassador to India Mohammad Fathali has described the news related to the arrest of Indian and Afghan citizens in Iran as completely false and misleading. He has appealed to the people to get information only from reliable and official sources.

This statement has come at a time when concerns have increased in India regarding the safety of Indian students studying there amid the ongoing protests in Iran. US-based organization Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) had claimed that hundreds of people have died during the protests that started on December 28.

Ambassador Fathali’s reaction

On the matter, Iranian Ambassador Fathali wrote on X (formerly Twitter), ‘The news being spread on some foreign X accounts regarding the situation in Iran is completely false. I request all concerned to obtain information only from reliable sources. Earlier it was claimed that Iranian police have arrested 10 Afghan and 6 Indian citizens along with their Iranian associates. Even before this, the Iranian government has been accusing foreign media of spreading misinformation about the internal situation of the country.

AIMSA and FAIMA statement on safety of Indian students

Meanwhile, All India Medical Students Association (AIMSA) and Federation of All India Medical Associations (FAIMA) on Sunday (January 11, 2026) clarified that all Indian students studying in Iran are completely safe. Speaking to ANI, Dr Mohammad Momin Khan, Vice President of AIMSA and FAIMA Doctors Association, said, ‘All our students are safe in Iran. There is no need to panic. He said that both the organizations have received confirmation of the safety of Indian students living in different parts of Iran. Many students themselves contacted the organizations and requested to reassure their families.

The Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) will vote for the election 2025 on Thursday (September 18) for the election. The fate of about 20 candidates of different panels is going to be captured in EVMs today.

Voting will be done in two shifts for DUSU election. First voting will be held from 8:30 am to 1 pm. In the second shift, votes will be cast from 3 pm to 7:30 pm. At the same time, the result of this election will be declared on Friday (September 19).

Impact of strictness of court

At the same time, the strictness of Delhi High Court on DUSU elections has been clearly seen in the North Campus of Delhi University. The case is during the DUSU election 2024 last year, when the Delhi High Court reprimanded the student organizations for the dirt from posters, pamphlets and walls on the campus.

The court had clearly stated that action should be taken against those who dirty the campus and pollution from publicity materials should be stopped. The result of the same rebuke is that every year in the electoral atmosphere, the roads, walls and sails and promotional materials of the campus were read every year, this time the entire North Campus campus has been seen very clean.

Main contest between ABVP-NSUI

A total of 20 candidates are trying their luck for the four important posts of Dusu- President, Vice President, Secretary and Joint Secretary. Apart from Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), National Students Union of India (NSUI), AISA, SFI and some other student organizations are also in the fray in this election.

The ABP News team interacted with the students of North Campus of Delhi University, on the basis of which it can be said that like every time, this time too, it is also seen between ABVP and NSUI. Both these prominent student organizations have fielded four of their candidates.

ABVP candidates

Chairman: Aryan Mann

Vice President: Govind Tanwar

Secretary: Kunal Chaudhary

Joint Secretary: Deepika Jha

NSUI candidates

Chairman: Josalin Nandita Chaudhary

Vice President: Rahul Jhansal

Secretary: Kabir

Joint Secretary: Lavkush Bhadana

Strong security arrangements

In a special conversation with ABP News, Dr. Rajesh Singh, the Chief Returning Officer of DUSU Election Committee, gave detailed information on the preparations for the voting and the procedure. He said, “We have got full support from Delhi Police to get DUSU Election 2025 in a peaceful and fair manner. Strong security arrangements have been made. This time a total of 52 calling centers have been set up so that students do not have any problem in casting their votes.”

EVM will vote

Dr. Singh also clarified that Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) will be used for DUSU election, while ballot paper for college counselors will be cast. This time more than 2.75 lakh students will exercise their franchise in DUSU election 2025. The results of the election will be declared by the evening of 19 September.
