Police will file an appeal against the court order

A court located in Chandausi of Sambhal district has ordered to register an FIR against the then police area officer (CO) Anuj Chaudhary, the then Kotwali in-charge Anuj Tomar and unknown policemen in the Sambhal violence case. However, a senior police officer said that the administration will file an appeal against this order.

The order was passed by Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Vibhanshu Sudhir on a petition filed by the father of a person injured in the violence on January 9 alleging that his son was shot by the police. The complainant accused the then CO Anuj Chaudhary, the then police station in-charge Anuj Tomar and 10-12 unknown policemen.

Judicial investigation has already been done in the matter- SP

Sambhal Superintendent of Police (SP) Krishna Kumar Bishnoi had told that the police will challenge the court order. He said, “An appeal will be filed and FIR will not be registered as judicial inquiry has already been conducted in the case.” Anuj Chaudhary is currently posted as Additional Superintendent of Police (Rural) in Firozabad, while Anuj Tomar is currently in-charge of Chandausi Kotwali in Sambhal district.

What is the whole controversy?

The controversy began on November 19 last year when Hindu petitioners, including lawyers Hari Shankar Jain and Vishnu Shankar Jain, filed a suit in the Sambhal district court claiming that the Shahi Jama Masjid was built over the already existing Harihar Nath temple. On the same day, a survey was conducted on the orders of the court, after which a second survey was conducted on 24 November. After the second survey, violence broke out in Sambhal, in which 4 people died and 29 policemen were injured.

Police have registered 12 FIRs in connection with the violence, naming over 2,000 people, including several political personalities including SP MP Ziaur Rehman Barke and mosque committee chief Zafar Ali.

Samajwadi Party (SP) national president and former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Akhilesh Yadav has launched a scathing attack on the central and state governments over the illegal trade of cough syrup containing codeine in the state. Akhilesh Yadav said that the people involved in the codeine-laced cough syrup racket have accumulated assets worth about Rs 800 crore, yet agencies like ED or CBI are not investigating them. He sarcastically asked why ED becomes active only in those states where elections are being held. He said that if the agencies are impartial, then why this big cough syrup case is not being investigated.

On December 19, 2025, the first day of the assembly session, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had said that a state-level Special Investigation Team (SIT) is working to investigate this matter. This SIT includes officers associated with Uttar Pradesh Police and Food Safety and Drug Administration (FSDA). The Chief Minister had said that the investigation will reveal to whom the money from illegal business has reached.

While giving details of the action in the House, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had said that the government has registered 79 cases in this matter, 225 people have been named and 78 accused have been arrested. He had said that raids have been conducted on 134 companies and STF is investigating the transactions related to this entire network. Akhilesh Yadav alleged that the government has given instructions to increase the votes by 200 and for this, the format of FIR has also been prepared, in which the workers will have to fill only the names.

He said that the Election Commission itself should explain how at the same time, in the SIR conducted by the same BLO, the number of voters from the entire state could be about 13 lakh less than the voters from rural areas only. He said that according to the information of the Commission, about 1 crore 93 lakh votes were unmapped after mapping, whereas about 2 crore votes are said to be mapped and now it is being called an error.

After collecting information from all the BLOs, it was found that there are about 4.57 lakh voters in Lucknow who were not found at their given addresses. At the same time, the names of those who did not fill the census form have also been removed from the list. Among these, there are 1.27 lakh voters who have died.

There was a wedding program of Tooba Hasan, daughter of former Moradabad MP and senior Samajwadi Party leader Dr. ST Hasan, in a hotel on Saturday night (January 3, 2026) in Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh.
