Why Europeans Tolerate Alcohol Better Than Indians: The relationship between humans and alcohol has not always been simple. Culture, social habits and body structure all play a role in this. Many of us consume alcohol in limited quantities, but a large population in the country is suffering from the problem of fatty liver. The question often arises that Europeans drink more alcohol than us, yet why do they have less problems with it? Dr. Harsh Vyas has shared an interesting information on this subject.

Information shared on social media

In a video shared on Instagram, he showed a comparison of liver ultrasound reports of a 37-year-old Italian and a 37-year-old Indian man. The surprising thing was that the European man who drank alcohol two-three times a week, his liver appeared to be more healthy, whereas the Indian man who did not drink alcohol, still showed fatty changes in his liver. According to Dr. Vyas, there could be many reasons behind this. The first reason is genetics, he said, adding that Europeans have better activity of alcohol-breaking enzymes, alcohol dehydrogenase and aldehyde dehydrogenase. This means that the toxic elements produced by alcohol are quickly eliminated from their body. Whereas in Asian population these enzymes are not as effective, due to which these harmful elements can remain in the body for a longer time and are released slowly.

Lifestyle also plays an important role

The second big reason is food. The European diet includes complex carbohydrates, healthy fats in the form of fish and seafood, olive oil and adequate protein. That means their food is balanced and full of nutrition. In comparison, the Indian diet is often high in refined carbohydrates, while relatively low in healthy fats and proteins. This difference can affect liver health. The third important aspect is physical activity. The doctor told that his Italian patient used to walk 5 to 6 kilometers every day and apart from this he also used to exercise for 30 to 40 minutes. At the same time, a large number of people in India are not able to do regular exercise and even walking 5 kilometers daily becomes difficult.

Dr. Vyas says that even though Europeans drink alcohol, their lifestyle is balanced and active. Better diet, regular exercise and favorable genetic factors together help in repairing the damage done to the body. Whereas if the lifestyle is unbalanced, then even without alcohol, liver related problems can increase.

Does Weekend Drinking Harm The Liver: Many people think that if they abstain from alcohol throughout the week and drink only on weekends, then this habit is safe. Like people think that if I don’t eat non-veg on Tuesday and Saturday, God will forgive. But God may forgive or not. But eating healthy, avoiding alcohol from Monday to Friday and then having “a little fun” on Saturday night can harm you. Let us tell you about it.

Liver does not follow the calendar in case of alcoholism

The job of the liver is to break down and expel the alcohol from the body. Every peg, every glass passes through it. The liver is definitely strong, but it is not a machine that can handle everything every time without any effect. When a large amount of alcohol is consumed in a short period of time, which is called binge drinking, there is a lot of pressure on the liver simultaneously. According to experts, the damage to the liver depends more on how much and how fast you drink alcohol, and not on the number of days in a week you do not drink alcohol.

Why was culture created?

In today’s work culture, weekend drinking is seen as a form of balance. Instead of drinking every day, limiting alcohol to Saturdays and Sundays seems like a responsibility. Brunch, birthday, wedding or Friday night party, everything revolves around alcohol. Gradually Friday night turns into Saturday and sometimes stretches till Sunday. This is the pattern that can become dangerous for the liver.

Doesn’t it cause harm?

It is a common misconception that the liver gets completely cured by not drinking alcohol for a few days. Doctors say that if the liver is getting damaged every weekend, then the alcohol-free days in between are not able to completely eliminate that damage. This repeated injury gradually becomes larger and can eventually increase the risk of fatty liver, fibrosis and even cirrhosis.

Which people are at greater risk?

People who are suffering from obesity, diabetes or insulin resistance, pre-existing liver disease, or have a family history of liver disease. The effect of weekend binge drinking can be more serious among them. However, this does not mean that other people are completely safe.

This is how silent damage happens

Symptoms of liver damage are not visible in the initial stages. Test reports and ultrasound may appear normal, making people think everything is fine. But the real damage keeps increasing silently and by the time the disease is caught, the situation has become serious.
