Alzheimer’s is not just a disease, it is a condition that gradually takes away a person’s memories, identity and independence. The most worrying thing is that its effect is being seen more on women than on men. Many researches show that women are not only more prone to Alzheimer’s disease, but its symptoms often appear earlier in them. Despite this, women’s mental health is not discussed as seriously as it should be.

Often mild memory loss, frequent forgetting of things, restlessness or confusion are ignored as the effect of age, stress or fatigue. This neglect of family and society becomes a big problem in the future. Today, when Alzheimer’s is increasing rapidly around the world, it is very important to understand why women are more affected by it and whether it can be stopped or slowed down. Meanwhile, new research hope has emerged regarding Omega-3 fatty acids.

What is Alzheimer’s disease?

Alzheimer’s is a neurodegenerative disease, that is, it gradually damages brain cells. It is mostly seen in people above 65 years of age, but its symptoms do not come suddenly. Its initial symptoms are forgetting recent things or events, asking the same questions again and again, not remembering what you ate or talked to recently, difficulty in taking decisions while moving forward, not being able to do many things simultaneously, difficulty in recognizing the path or people, changes in behavior and language. This disease progresses slowly over months or years, so it is very important to identify it in time.

Why is the risk of Alzheimer’s higher in women?

1. According to doctors and researchers, there are many reasons behind this. Like women live longer. Since Alzheimer’s is an age-related disease, its risk automatically increases in women.

2. Hormonal changes after menopause, during menopause the estrogen hormone decreases, which protects the brain cells. Due to its reduction the brain becomes more sensitive.

3. Many women did not get as many opportunities for education and mental development earlier, due to which their brain reserve may remain weak.

4. Due to genetic reasons, a gene called APOE4 is found more in women, which increases the risk of Alzheimer’s.

What is Omega-3 and why is it important for the brain?

Omega-3 fatty acids, especially DHA and EPA, are considered very important for brain health. About 50–60 percent of the brain is made up of fat. A major part of this is Omega-3 fatty acids. DHA strengthens the membranes of brain cells. It improves the functioning of neurotransmitters, thereby maintaining the ability to think and understand. Deficiency of Omega-3 can weaken memory. The risk of depression, dementia and other mental problems may increase.

Can Omega-3 Help Prevent Alzheimer’s?

Research shows that omega-3 is not a miracle cure, but it may help prevent Alzheimer’s. Its effect has been seen more in the case of mild memory loss (MCI). It improves the health of the brain as well as the heart, thereby reducing the risk of dementia. According to experts, people who have good levels of Omega-3 in their body, mental decline is relatively slow.

Why is this important for women in developing countries?

Elderly women in low-income countries have to face many problems. Such as financial dependence, limited access to doctors and specialists, lack of taking mental health seriously, in such a situation an Omega-3 rich diet, proper counseling and low-cost supplements can be an effective solution. Food items like fish, flax seeds, walnuts are helpful in this. Experts believe that supplements alone are not enough, timely screening, special mental health plans for women, support to caregivers, and more research at the local level are also needed.

How Alzheimer’s Impacts Relationships: If, after nearly four decades of marriage, your spouse suddenly asks you again, “Will you marry me?” So it becomes not just an emotional moment, but a deep story of illness and unbreakable love, battling memory. Something similar happened to 78-year-old Linda Feldman in November 2025. Her husband Michael O’Riley (77) is suffering from Alzheimer’s. Some days he doesn’t even remember that Linda is his wife, but one thing never changes, he just knows that he loves her very much.

In Linda’s words in this story published recently in The Washington Post, he just knows that he loves me, it never changes. In today’s times, where relationships break easily, this story shows that true love can survive even in the face of difficult challenges like illness.

life before memories

Michael and Linda met in 1979. Both worked in the field of law and their friendship gradually turned into a deep relationship. Despite having different natures, they became a part of each other’s world. Travels, long conversations and time spent with family became the hallmark of their life. In 1987, they married Sadegi and lived together like a strong family for years.

When the disease began to be understood

About seven years ago, Michael was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. This disease not only takes away memories, but also gradually limits a person’s identity, self-reliance and social life. Michael, who once argued in court for hours without notes, now started getting confused in words and ways. Linda took care of him at home for a long time, it was a very exhausting experience mentally and emotionally.

Irritability, confusion and loss of identity are common problems in Alzheimer’s patients, but the one saving grace with Michael was that his affection never diminished. He still held Linda’s hand, hugged her and said “I love you.”

Caring and emotional health

Two and a half years ago, Linda had to shift Michael to a memory care facility with a heavy heart. This decision is very difficult for many families, but proper care is important not only for the mental health of the patient but also for the caregiver. Linda admits that here she is relieved that Michael is safe.

Once again ‘yes’

In November 2025, Michael proposed marriage to Linda again. Just like the first time. This was a new thing for them, but for Linda it was an emotional moment beyond memories. They remarried in a small ceremony in January. It is not just a story, but also emphasizes how important emotional connection is in a disease like Alzheimer’s.

With increasing age, not only the body but also the mind starts becoming weak. Many times we ignore it considering it to be an effect of age, but a recent major research has revealed shocking facts about forgetfulness i.e. dementia or memory loss in the elderly.

Experts from Lucknow’s King George Medical University (KGMU) and PGI together conducted a research on 350 elderly people. This research revealed that the problem of forgetfulness was found to be almost three times more common in women than in men. That is, if out of 100 men, 13 have the problem of forgetting, then among 100 women of the same age, this problem reaches 39. Also, its risk is more seen in widows and single women, in such a situation let us know why women are 3 times more forgetful than men.

Why are women 3 times more forgetful than men?

Researchers say that this problem is increasing rapidly in women not only due to age, but also due to malnutrition, mental stress and loneliness, due to which widows and women living away from their families have become more victims of this disease. The diet of such women is not balanced and they are not able to take proper care of their health. Besides, lack of emotional and social connection also has a deep impact on the mind.

What else came to light in the research?

Research also revealed that the power of thinking, decision making and reasoning also decreases in women suffering from amnesia. According to KGMU experts, due to living alone, women are not able to eat properly, due to which there is deficiency of nutrients in the body. This malnutrition gradually affects the working power of the brain.

What are the common symptoms of this problem?

Research found that not only memory problems but many other mental and physical problems were also seen in elderly people and women suffering from amnesia. These include frequently forgetting things or keeping things somewhere, increased irritability and anger, sleeplessness or very little sleep, suspiciousness of everyone, feeling difficult in daily work, increase in BP, sugar, eye problems and other diseases.

In today’s fast and changing lifestyle, taking care of health has become more important than ever, especially for women, many changes occur in the body with increasing age. Like menopause, hormonal imbalance, mental stress and lack of physical activity, all these affect not only the body but also the mind. In such a situation, Omega-3 fatty acid is a type of good fat which is very important for the body, but the body can produce it on its own in very small quantities. Therefore it is necessary to take it through food.

Omega-3 fatty acids are especially important for women. But do you know that deficiency of Omega-3 fatty acids in the body makes women a dangerous disease. Omega-3 fatty acid deficiency is especially seen more in women and this is the reason why they can easily fall prey to this disease. So let us know what dangerous disease occurs if Omega-3 level decreases in women and what is the way to avoid it.

Which dangerous disease causes deficiency of Omega-3 level in women?

Due to low level of Omega-3 in women, dangerous diseases like Alzheimer’s occur. This is a serious mental illness, in which memory becomes weak, the ability to think and understand decreases and changes in behavior also occur. Brain cells are made of Omega-3, especially DHA is found in large quantities in them. It helps maintain brain functions, such as memory, ability to concentrate, and mental balance. Omega-3 fatty acids reduce inflammation and oxidative stress, which are major causes behind diseases like Alzheimer’s. Apart from this, Omega-3 fatty acids improve blood flow in the brain, which provides necessary nutrition and oxygen to the cells. It prevents the death of neurons i.e. it protects the cells.

Why are women at greater risk?

Hormonal changes occur in women after menopause, which can affect brain function. Also, at this age, physical activity reduces, many women also struggle with depression and there is deficiency in nutrition. A study conducted in Britain has shown that the level of Omega-3 fatty acids was found to be very low in women suffering from Alzheimer’s, whereas no such difference was seen in men. This means that Omega-3 is even more important for the brain of women, especially after the age of 40.

What is the way to avoid this

1. Eat things rich in Omega-3, like fish, flax seeds, chia seeds, walnuts, soybean and kidney beans.

2. Take Omega-3 supplements. If there is deficiency of Omega-3 in your diet then you can take DHA and EPA supplements. Especially if you do not eat fish, supplements can also be a good option.

3. Maintain an active physical nature. Physical activity may decrease after menopause, but light exercise, yoga, and meditation have a positive effect on mental health.

4. To reduce stress, pay attention to mental. Maintaining mental balance is helpful in avoiding diseases like Alzheimer’s.

With increasing age, a person’s physical strength and ability to remember decreases. Like forgetting things after keeping them, weakness in the body and blurred vision are inevitable. There is nothing to worry about because cognitive decline is seen in most people in old age. In cognitive decline, a person’s mental ability decreases day by day and he starts forgetting things. In such a situation, this is normal with increasing age.

However, if this problem increases excessively then it indicates serious cognitive decline, which is very dangerous. The biggest reason behind this has been said to be the habit of smoking. The Lancet report shows that people who quit smoking in midlife slow down severe cognitive decline in old age.

Smoking increases cognitive decline

Smoking has a great impact on a person’s mental health. Due to this, cognitive ability decreases day by day and memory, attention and executive functions become slow. This significantly increases the risk of dementia, Alzheimer’s and stroke. According to doctors, this happens because smoking damages the blood vessels of the brain and the blood supply to the brain reduces, due to which the brain stops working or starts working slowly. Apart from this, it can also cause many neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s. This is because smoking causes amyloid plaque to form in the brain, which increases the risk. Additionally, nicotine blocks the blood supply to the brain, which increases the risk of stroke.

What are the benefits of quitting smoking?

Scientist found in his study that in people who quit smoking in middle life, the cognitive decline slows down by 20% in old age and the decline in verbal fluency also slows down by 50%, due to which their thinking power remains fine and they are able to communicate in a better way. In such a situation, people who are addicted to smoking should try to quit it in middle age itself so that this problem does not increase further in old age.
