The central government has told the Lok Sabha that there has been no formal discussion with the US regarding the purchase of fifth generation F-35 fighter aircraft. Congress MP Balwant Baswant Wankhede sought answers to 3 questions from the Ministry of External Affairs in the Lok Sabha, one of which was on the purchase of F-35.

‘No formal discussion was held on F-35 fighter jet’

In a written reply, Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh said, “After a meeting with Trump during PM Modi’s visit to Trump, it was told in the joint statement of the two countries that America will review its policy for releasing F-35 for India and under the sea system. No formal discussion has been held on this issue yet.”

This explanation of the government came a day after the report of Bloomberg, claiming that India has bluntly told the US that it does not want to buy F-35 stealth fighter jet. According to the report, India is considering other options along with an increase in American imports like natural gas, communication equipment and gold. However, no new defense purchase is being considered.

‘India had diplomatic talks with US’

Congress MP Balwant Wankhede sought details about the role of American diplomats in efforts to reduce enmity between India and Pakistan after the terrorist attack in Pahalgam. On this, Kirti Vardhan Singh said that between April 22 and May 10, India had diplomatic talks with many countries including the United States.

The Minister of State for External Affairs said, “On May 9, Vice President JD Vance was told that if Pakistan makes a big attack, India will give appropriate reply. The discussion on stopping military action was between the DGMOs of India and Pakistan and it started at Pakistan’s request.”
