Amazon Layoffs 2025: E-commerce giant American company Amazon is once again going to do mass layoffs. According to reports, the company can start the process of laying off about 30 thousand employees from Tuesday. Actually, due to increased demand during Covid-19, the company had made a large number of hirings, but now this step is being taken to cut expenses and increase operational efficiency.

Which departments will be affected?

A total of 15.5 lakh employees are currently working in Amazon, out of which 3.5 lakh are corporate staff. This is said to be the biggest layoff after 2022, when the company had removed about 27,000 employees. The information about layoffs was first given by news agency Reuters, although no official statement has come from Amazon on this.

In the last two years, Amazon had made small-scale layoffs in several departments like podcasting, communications and devices. This time’s layoffs are likely to impact HR, Operations, Devices and Services and Amazon Web Services (AWS).

Workforce will change with AI and automation

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy had indicated in June that the company was moving rapidly in the direction of Artificial Intelligence (AI), which could reduce the workforce in the coming years. He had said in a memorandum issued to employees that with the increasing use of AI tools, many routine tasks will be automated, which may reduce the need for some roles. The company has instructed managers to take training on how to give layoff notices through email.

Wave of layoffs continues in tech sector

According to Layoffs.fyi, a website that monitors layoffs in the tech sector, so far 216 companies have laid off about 98,000 employees in the year 2025. Last year this number was around 1.53 lakh.

A day earlier on Monday, Amazon’s shares registered a gain of 1.2% and closed at $226.97. The company expects good profits in its quarterly results to be announced on Thursday. Amazon’s biggest source of profit is cloud computing unit AWS, whose sales grew 17.5% in the second quarter to $30.9 billion.

Amazon relocation warning: The US has ordered thousands of its employees to reelocked in cities like Arlington, Virginia and Washington. This decree of reelocation has been pronounced to employees of different teams.

Now or not, employees will get just 30 days to decide whether it is to be reelocked. If the employees agreed to go to the company’s office in other cities, then it is fine. No, they will have to submit their resignation. Employees resigned will not get any serence payment i.e. compensation.

It will be difficult for employees to take decisions

Since, there are already reports of retrenchment in many companies, so the pressure on the employees has increased further. There are many people in the company who live with their family, there are children going to school at home, it will be very difficult for them to take this decision. Actually, during the time of Corona, Amazon gave the facility of work from home to its employees.

Then from January 2, 2025, the company asked the employees to come to office five days a week under their ‘Return to Office’ policy. Actually, the company wants to increase mutual cooperation between employees, teamwork should be encouraged. Amazon believes that working together promotes innovation, increases bonding among employees, work environment improves. In such a situation, if the employee is ready for reelination, then the process for this will start in the next 60 days.

Fear of pruning in employees

In recent times, many American companies like Microsoft to Meta, Walmart, IBM have been trimmed. Meanwhile, Amazon’s CEO Andy Jessie has told his employees that the company will reduce the number of employees due to Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the next few years. Amazon is now adding more AI tools and agents in its operations. Due to all this, the pressure on employees to save their jobs has increased more than ever.
