US President Donald Trump described Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a good friend and great Prime Minister amidst a tariff controversy with India. He said that there is special relations between India and America and sometimes moments of stress can come, but the relationship between the two countries will remain strong.

Prime Minister Modi, reacting to Trump’s comment, wrote on X (Twitter) that he deeply appreciates the positive evaluation of the feelings and relationships of the US President and fully supports it.

Why India and America relations deteriorate?

Recently, the US has imposed up to 50 percent tariffs on imports coming from India. In August, the Trump administration imposed 25 percent tariff. After this, an additional 25 percent fee was also imposed on India for buying oil from Russia. These decisions have caused sourness in business relations between the two countries. However, India and America are still ally at the strategic and diplomatic levels.

Modi’s emphasis on strategic partnership

PM Modi said that there is a positive and visionary widespread global partnership between India and America. The partnership of the two countries is constantly strengthening with the cooperation in defense, technology, energy and cooperation in the Indo-Pacific sector. This is the reason that despite business tension, both leaders are giving priority to personal relations.

Indo-US relations balance of friendship and stress

The relations between India and America have never been very stressful. Even though there is a difference of opinion on business or policy, both countries are important partners of each other in a strategic point of view. Both countries cooperate in the fight against security and terrorism. To maintain power balance in the Asia-Pacific region, it is very important for the two countries to live together.

US President Donald Trump recently made a positive comment on Indo-US relations, saying that he would always be a friend of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and India is a special partner for America. Apart from this, he also said that I do not like what he is doing at this time. His gesture was towards improving India’s current relations with China and buying oil from Russia.

Reacting to US President Donald Trump’s statement, PM Modi wrote on the social media platform X (Twitter) that he appreciates Trump’s feelings and positive evaluation of Indo-US relations. He described the partnership between the two countries as a comprehensive and visionary strategic partnership.

What did experts say on Trump’s statement?

Wiles at West Asia’s strategist Vile topped says that America cannot ignore India. According to him, there are many major reasons behind this. He said that Trump and Modi have good relationships on a personal level. There is a large population of Indians in America, which is important for American economy and trade. Apart from this, when the US President makes positive comments on India, it is not only a message for the Government of India but also for the overseas Indians. The topper believes that Trump businessmen also take decisions with thinking, so it is necessary that Indian companies get a way to export without tariffs and troubles in America.

Need to be careful with Trump: Expert

Wile topic warned that even though the statement is positive, there is a need to be cautious. Trump has issued executive orders on tariffs and imports related to India. These orders cannot be easily withdrawn, unless there are strong evidence or reasons behind it, so Indian companies and the government have to ensure that talks with the US on business issues are balanced and positive.

What did US President Donald Trump say?

US President Donald Trump while answering ANI’s question said that I will always be a friend of Modi. He is a great Prime Minister. However, Trump further said that I do not like what he is doing at this time. His reference was about the purchase of oil and weapons from Russia. He further said about the tariff controversy that there is a special relationship between India and America. There is nothing to worry about in this. Sometimes such moments come.

Former US National Security Advisor John Bolton has sharply criticized President Donald Trump’s tariff policy applied to India. He said that heavy tariffs imposed on India are a big mistake in bilateral relations. The US has imposed a total of 50 percent tariff on India, out of which 25 per cent has been implemented on August 7, the second 25 per cent has been imposed on purchasing oil from Russia, which will be applicable from August 27. On this, Bolton said that due to tariffs, trust between the two countries has suffered a setback.

Interestingly, Bolton also mentioned Pakistan in his statement. He jokingly said that Prime Minister Modi can offer Trump to nominate Trump twice for the Nobel Peace Prize. In June, the Government of Pakistan formally recommended Trump’s name for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize. Pakistan had claimed that Donald Trump’s decisive diplomatic intervention played an important role in the India-Pakistan struggle. However, India has completely dismissed that America has played a role in the ceasefire of India-Pakistan.

Trump rescues and accuses India
Defending the decision related to his tariff, Trump claimed that India is buying a large amount of oil from Russia and selling it on profits in the international market. He wrote on social media platform Truth social that India does not care that this money is strengthening Russia in Russia-Ukraine war. At the same time, Bolton said that China is also buying Russian oil, but such tariffs or secondary restrictions were not imposed on Beijing.

Trump’s attack on media and critics
Trump attacked the media over the coverage of the meeting with Putin in Alaska and taunted that even if he gets Moscow and Leningrad from Russia, the media will criticize him. He dismissed his statements, calling John Bolton a fool.

Effect on international diplomacy
Heavy tariffs on India are not only affecting bilateral trade, but are also causing tension in international diplomacy. Experts believe that if this dispute is prolonged, it can also affect defense cooperation, technical partnership and Indo-Pacific strategy.

Also read: ‘America stands with us …’ Jailonski said after a conversation with Trump, cooperation of European Union

Trump tarifs impact on india: US President Donald Trump announced 25 percent tariff on India on Wednesday, 30 July 2025 amidst the ongoing conversation about the trade deal. These new rates will be applicable to the goods to be exported from India to America from August 1 on Friday, 1 August.

In such a situation, the way Trump is imposing tariffs one after the other on different countries, it is being considered a major setback for businessmen and investors around the world. After Trump’s move, the commercial sourness between the two countries has increased further.

What will be the effect on India?

Now the question is arising that what will be the impact of this huge tariff imposed by Trump on the increasing GDP of India and the business of exporters here. Brokerage firms Nomura, Barclays and Goldman Sachs have released their reports about the possible effects.

Nomura says that the speed of the economy growing at the high speed of India may decrease by 0.2 percent. Goldman Sachs has estimated a decline of 0.3 percent. Barclays has also agreed with the forecast of Goldman Sachs.

Impact on Indo-US relations

According to Goldman Sachs, India’s defense and energy agreement with Russia is being considered as the main reason behind this 25 percent tariff imposed by Trump.
At the same time, Nomura says that there are two major reasons behind this decision: America’s growing trade deficit with India and the growing inclination towards Moscow for India’s energy and defense needs.

Competitive loss fears

Significantly, even before this, America has put heavy tariffs on many goods imported from India. After this new tariff, India will be in loss compared to its competitive countries, such as Vietnam,. This will directly affect Indian businessmen, who will now become less competitive in the US market and may have to suffer more.

Also read: RBI’s apprehension increased due to RBI’s interference between Trump’s tariff, now the rupee raised from a five -month low
