Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), located in Aligarh district of Uttar Pradesh, does not need any name. A large number of students in the country want to take admission in this university and study. Talking about session 2025-26, AMU gave 5% reservation to the students taking admission under PwBD i.e. Persons with Benchmark Disabilities category. But this reservation is not applicable equally in every course. The university said that in most of the courses, these 5% seats will be additional to the existing seats, that is, new seats will be increased over the approved intake so that the general category seats are not reduced.

But in some professional courses like MBBS, BDS, BUMS, B.Sc Nursing, B.Arch, postgraduate courses of medical faculty and PhD, this reservation is within the existing seats only. Seats are not increased in these courses, rather 5% share of PwBD is fixed in the available seats.

What documents are required?

To avail the benefit of this category, a candidate must have proof of at least 40% disability. At the same time, it has also been made clear that PwBD candidates will be able to take admission only in those courses where their disability does not create hindrance in studies.

At the same time, if we talk about financial exemption, AMU has given great relief to the students of PwBD category. While normally students have to pay the admission test fee, PwBD candidates have to pay only Rs 100 while applying. Similarly, upon admission, they will have to pay only Rs 100 as tuition fee. However, this relaxation will not be available to those candidates who are on fellowship or take admission in Self-Finance, NRI or Foreign National quota.

This much percentage relaxation in qualification also

These students have also been given a big advantage in qualification. PwBD candidates will get relaxation of up to 5% in the qualifying examination. This means that where 50% marks are required for general students, PwBD candidates will be considered eligible even with 45% marks. The same relaxation will be applicable in the admission test also. Apart from this, wherever the maximum age limit is fixed in the course, age relaxation of up to five years will be given to PwBD candidates. However, this relaxation will not be applicable in those courses where the age limit is fixed by any external council or regulatory body.

What will happen if there is no candidate from PwBD category?

If eligible candidates for PwBD category are not found in a particular course and reservation is applicable within the existing seats in that course, then such vacant seats will be transferred to the general category. However, this rule will not be implemented in PhD programme.

This time the festival of Diwali was celebrated openly and in a grand manner for the first time in Aligarh Muslim University (AMU). In this event organized at the NRSC Club campus of the university, students illuminated the campus by lighting 2100 lamps. The words ‘AMU’, ‘Jai Shri Ram’ and ‘Shubh Diwali’ were beautifully decorated with lamps. This event was not only about showcasing the pomp and show of the festival of lights, but also giving the message of unity, harmony and cultural harmony.

Strict security arrangements were made on this occasion. ID cards of students were checked for admission and the program was conducted systematically on the campus. The lighting of lamps started at dusk, when students reached the streets decorated with rangoli, flowers and lamps. The most attractive scene of the festival of lights was when 2100 lamps were lit simultaneously. Colorful fireworks in the sky transformed the entire university into a fair. The fireworks of ‘Special Army Bharat Tank’ attracted everyone’s attention. During this, 21 kg sweets were distributed and the students wished each other a happy Diwali by feeding them sweets.

Supreme Court Judge Justice K.K. Vinod Chandran on Monday (August 18, 2025) separated himself from hearing a petition challenging the appointment of Professor Naima Khatoon as the Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU). The apex court was told that Khatoon became VC by getting important votes of her husband, who was the Vice Chancellor (VC) of AMU at that time. The petitioner called the husband voting in favor of his wife as a conflict of interest.

Chief Justice BR Gawai and Justice Chandran and Justice N.V. Anjaria’s bench is hearing an appeal filed against the order of Allahabad High Court on behalf of Muzaffar Uruz Rabbani in which Khatoon’s appointment was upheld. Khatoon is the first woman to hold this post in the history of the institute. During the proceedings, Justice Chandran offered to separate himself from the case citing his previous role as a Chancellor in a similar selection process.
