Modi on Antibiotic Resistance: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday expressed serious concern over the increasing misuse of antibiotics and the threat of antibiotic resistance arising from it. In his radio program Mann Ki Baat, he clearly said that “Antibiotics are not medicines which can be taken without thinking.”

Citing a recent report of the Indian Council of Medical Research, the Prime Minister said that even in common diseases like pneumonia and urine infection, many antibiotics are no longer proving effective. He said that this trend is a matter of concern for everyone and if it is not stopped in time, treatment will become more difficult.

PM Modi said that using antibiotics without doctor’s advice is becoming the biggest reason for this problem. He warned that the thinking like “one pill will cure every disease” is making the infection more powerful than medicines. For this reason, bacteria are becoming stronger against medicines. He appealed to people to stop self-medicating, especially in the case of antibiotics. The Prime Minister said that it is important to consult a doctor before taking medicine for any disease. He said that responsible use is important not only for the health of the individual, but also for the society, so that the potency of life-saving medicines remains intact.

What do experts say?

Health experts have already been warning that antimicrobial resistance is becoming one of India’s biggest public health challenges. According to ICMR, the use of antibiotics without prescription is increasing this problem rapidly, due to which even common infections can become difficult to treat.

On this, Dr. Arun Sidram Kharat, Professor of Microbiology, Jawaharlal Nehru University, says that antimicrobial resistance has become one of the biggest global health threats of the 21st century. He said that indiscriminate use of antibiotics delays treatment, increases costs and doctors have to resort to stronger medicines, which also have more side effects. He warned that if concrete steps are not taken in time, it is estimated that by 2050 antimicrobial resistance may become one of the leading causes of death in the world. Therefore, we need to be very careful in its use, because it can cause harm later.
