Amidst the ongoing war in the Middle East, Sri Lanka has given a big blow to Donald Trump by not allowing American fighter planes to land on its land. Sri Lankan President Anura Kumar Dissanayake told Parliament that the government had in early March refused to allow two US fighter jets to land at Mattala International Airport in the country’s south-east.

We will not bow down: Sri Lanka bluntly tells US

Dissanayake said that two warplanes from the US military base in Djibouti had sought permission to visit Sri Lanka on March 4 and 8, but both requests were rejected. He said, ‘We want to maintain our neutrality despite various pressures. We will not bow down. The war in West Asia is creating challenges, but we will make every effort to remain neutral.

Fighter jet was equipped with anti-ship missile

The President said, ‘The Americans wanted to bring two fighter jets equipped with eight anti-ship missiles from the base in Djibouti to Mattala International Airport and we refused.’

Dissanayake’s statement came a day after his meeting with US Special Envoy for South and Central Asia Sergio Gore. According to the statement, the two leaders discussed efforts to secure vital sea lanes, secure ports, strengthen mutually beneficial trade relations, and advance a free, open and prosperous Indo-Pacific region.

US targets Iranian ship near Sri Lanka

On March 4, 2026, the US targeted Iran’s ‘IRIS DENA’ ship near Galle, the southern coastal city of Sri Lanka, in which 84 sailors died, while 32 were saved. The ship was returning home after participating in the naval fleet review held in Visakhapatnam, India.

Two days later, another Iranian ship ‘IRIS Bushehr’ with 219 sailors wanted permission to enter Colombo port. Sri Lanka asked it to head towards the eastern port of Trincomalee after anchoring off the Colombo coast. The ship’s 204 sailors are currently stationed at the naval establishment near Colombo.

India sri lanka relations: Earlier this month of Prime Minister Narendra Modi (April 6, 2025) went on a three -day visit to Sri Lanka. During this time, there were many agreements between India and Sri Lanka regarding defense matters. Because of these agreements, President Anura Kumar Disanayake’s domestic critics are trying to make it a political issue.

Perhaps it was not a coincidence, exactly 54 years and 1 day before the signing of the MoU (April 5, 1971), the political party Vimukti Pararamuna (JVP), the political party of Disanayake, launched Sri Lankan’s first armed revolt against Indian expansion with the slogan of motherland or death. The JVP is a political party running on the ideas of the Marxist-Leninist. The party was involved in another armed rebellion against the then government in Colombo during 1987–89.

Disanayake reached Sri Lankan Parliament for the first time in 2000
As a representative of JVP, Disanayake entered the Sri Lankan Parliament for the first time in 2000. He has been the main voice of the party in Parliament for the last 20 years. In 2019, Disanayake formed an alliance called National People’s Power (NPP), which included JVP as a major constituent and twenty other political parties, trade unions and social groups.

Last year, Disinayak was elected President of Sri Lanka as NPP leader. After SLFP and UNP, he became the first person to win the election as the leader of the third party. However, when a memorandum of agreement was being signed within the Secretariat in Colombo on 6 April, a faction was protesting against Indian expansion outside the nearby Fort railway station.

Sri Lanka is important for China
This agreement is reached at a time when China is also planning to expand in Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka is also very important for China, because it wants to dominate the Indian Ocean region (IOR) as part of its string of pearl strategy, which is a matter of concern for India. Sri Lanka leasing Hambantota port for 99 years is part of this strategy.

India adopted ‘ocean’ policy
New Delhi’s strategy towards Colombo shows mutual and overall progress for security and development in PM Modi’s vision (ocean) areas, which he announced on 12 March in Mauritius. The ocean approach is based on the Sagar (security and development for all in the region) policy, which PM Modi first announced during his visit to Mauritius in 2015.

PM Modi has traveled 4 times Sri Lanka
PM Modi had said that we have adopted the ocean wicked for the stability and prosperity of this entire region. Today, while taking this forward, I would like to say that our approach to the global South will move beyond the ocean, which means mutual and overall progress for safety and development in areas. He said that the new approach will emphasize business for development, capacity building for sustainable development and mutual security for shared future. It is important that this was PM Modi’s fourth visit to Sri Lanka and this time he spent three days in Sri Lanka.
