An important meeting was held at the Prime Minister’s residence on Tuesday (May 12, 2026) for the new director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). In this important meeting, along with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi were also present. However, opposition leader Rahul Gandhi has expressed his disagreement in the meeting regarding the selection of the new CBI director at the PM residence. After the end of the meeting, he also gave a note of dissent.

The names of about half a dozen Indian Police Service (IPS) officers are being discussed for the new director of CBI. However, currently Praveen Sood is working on the post of CBI Director, who was given one year extension by the Central Government in the year 2025 and his tenure is ending on 25th of this month, i.e. May 25, 2026.

Which officers are in the race to become CBI Chief??

The names of several IPS officers are being discussed for the appointment of the new director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). In which the names of 1990 batch IPS officer of Haryana cadre Shatrujit Singh Kapoor, Indian intelligence agency RAW chief and 1989 batch IPS officer Parag Jain, 1989 batch IPS officer of Madhya Pradesh cadre Ajay Kumar Sharma and current Director General of Police (DGP) of Maharashtra and 1990 batch IPS officer Sadanand Vasant Date are also included.

• Shatrujit Singh Kapoor, a 1990 batch IPS officer of Haryana cadre, has also been the Director General of Police of Haryana and is currently working as the Director General (DG) of Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP). IPS Shatrujit Singh Kapoor’s hold on law and order and security matters is considered very strong.
• Currently, IPS Parag Jain, the head of Indian intelligence agency RAW, is known as an expert in intelligence matters. He has served on many important posts. Along with this, he has also played an important role in many sensitive operations related to terrorism.

• IPS Ajay Kumar Sharma is the chairman of Madhya Pradesh Police Housing and Infrastructure Development Corporation. He has served on important posts like DG of Economic Offenses Wing (EOW) and ADG of Indore Zone. He has also been awarded the President’s Police Medal.
• At the same time, the name of Maharashtra DGP IPS Sadanand Vasant Date is also included in this list, who has also previously been the head of the National Investigation Agency (NIA). Date is known for his good works during the 26/11 Mumbai attacks.
