Till a few days ago, Zoho’s Arattai app was being touted as an indigenous alternative to WhatsApp. It also became the most downloaded app on Google Play Store, but now its magic is fading. In comparison to WhatsApp, this app is not being liked by the users and now it was out of the list of top 100 apps on Play Store. About a month ago everyone was talking about Arattai app and a large number of people had created their accounts on this app.

Why did Arattai app lag?

Arattai app was launched in 2021, but it got limelight only this year. After a post by Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, people discovered this app and the number of its users increased rapidly. It has many features like WhatsApp, but it could not work its magic for long. Initially its messages were not end-to-end encrypted. Apart from this, removing people from WhatsApp was a big challenge for Arattai, which the company could not overcome. People have been using WhatsApp for a long time and for many people it has become the default choice for messaging and calling. In such a situation, it became difficult for Arattai to remain on top in the rankings.

Full attention to privacy in Arattai

Made entirely in India, the Arattai app offers features like personal chat, group chat, voice notes, image and video sharing like WhatsApp. Now it has come with end-to-end encryption feature for personal chat also and the company is preparing to equip it with many more new features. Preparations are also underway to integrate Zoho Pay app into it, so that users can use Arattai for chatting as well as for payment. Zoho, the company making it, says that full care has been taken of privacy in Arattai and it will never monetize personal data.

Behind the Aratai app is the founder of Zoho Company Sridhar Vambu. Sridhar Vambu was born in 1968 in Tanjavur district of Tamil Nadu. He was smart in studies since childhood. He did his B.Tech in Electrical Engineering from IIT Madras and then went to America and earned a PhD from Princeton University.

Decision to return to India

Sridhar started his career with Qualcomm, a US big company, where he worked on wireless technology. But after a few years, he decided to leave a comfortable life abroad and return to India. This step was very shocking at that time, because many people wanted to settle there, but Sridhar decided to work for the country.

Office made in the village

After returning from America, he created his office not in big cities like Bengaluru or Hyderabad, but in a small village in Tenkasi district of Tamil Nadu. Even today, he goes to office by bicycle and gives modern technology training to the youth of the village. They believe that world class technology can develop not only in cities, but also in villages, if the youth there are given a chance.

Company started by this name?

In the year 1996, Sridhar Vambu, along with his friends and family, started a company called Adventnet, which later became Zoho Corporation. Its aim was to create an Indian software company that could compete with the world. In the year 2021, Joho took another big initiative and launched a messaging app named Arattai.

India’s own WhatsApp

Recently, when Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan supported the Aratai app and appealed to the people to adopt indigenous digital platforms. According to reports, in just three days, the daily sign-up of this app increased from 3,000 to 3,50,000. People started adopting it as “Made in India WhatsApp”. He is the 39th richest person in India in the 2024 list of Forbes India. His total assets have been estimated at $ 5.85 billion, or about Rs 51,900 crore. He was awarded the Padma Shri Award in 2021 by the Government of India for his contribution.
