In today’s time, diabetes is becoming a common but serious disease. As soon as a person is diagnosed with diabetes, he is immediately told about various precautions. First of all sugar is banned, then questions are raised on sweet things, biscuits, namkeen, potatoes, things made from refined flour and even wheat flour. In such a situation, people wonder what they should eat and what not. Taking advantage of this problem, there is a flood of sugar free products in the market. Biscuits, chocolates, ice creams, sweets, almost everything is now available under the name of sugar free.

Diabetic patients eat them without hesitation thinking that when there is no sugar in it, how will it increase the sugar level. But doctors say that the word sugar free sometimes confuses people. Especially people consider sugar free biscuits to be absolutely healthy and start eating them daily, whereas the truth is something else. So let us know whether sugar free biscuits also cause diabetes.

Can sugar free biscuits also cause diabetes?

Most sugar free biscuits are made from flour. Even though they do not contain white sugar, the flour itself helps in increasing the blood sugar rapidly. Apart from this, refined oil or trans fat is also added to them, which is not at all good for health. Eating flour suddenly increases the level of insulin in the body, which can cause blood sugar to spike. This is the reason why eating sugar free biscuits daily and in large quantities can be harmful for diabetic patients. Even in people who are not diabetic, the risk of developing diabetes in future can increase.

How much quantity can one eat? Sugar Free Biscuit

If you eat sugar free biscuits then it is important to understand that do not eat too much considering it as free. Doctor’s advice is not to eat more than 1-2 biscuits a day and that too occasionally, the habit of eating biscuits with tea every day should be avoided.

What to look for when buying biscuits?

While buying sugar free biscuits, definitely read the label of the packet. See whether the biscuit is made from maida or whole wheat, it should have good fiber content and should not contain ingredients like maltodextrin, as this can also increase blood sugar. Also check what kind of artificial sweetener has been used. If the label is not clear or contains too many chemicals, then it is better to stay away from such biscuits.

If you have a habit of eating something with tea, then choose a healthy option instead of biscuits. Like roasted makhana, peanuts, cashews or almonds (in limited quantity), flaxseeds, chia seeds, pumpkin seeds, oats. Apart from this, items made from coarse grains like jowar, millet and ragi are more beneficial for diabetic patients. If you have to eat biscuits, then home made flour biscuits are the best option. In these you can control the amount of sugar and avoid flour and refined oil.

Nowadays, as soon as we go to a shop, our eyes first fall on those things which are written sugar-free, low-calorie or guilt-free. We feel that if there is no sugar then the thing will automatically be good for health. Especially due to fear of diabetes or to keep weight down, people have started taking sugar-free sweets, biscuits, chewing gums, protein bars and diet drinks instead of regular sugar. But the question is whether sugar-free is really completely safe or are we unknowingly harming our body, especially the liver. So let us know that if you repeatedly take sugar free to avoid diabetes, then how it ruins the liver.

Increasing trend of diabetes and sugar-free

Diabetes is spreading very fast in today’s lifestyle. According to the 2024 data of America’s CDC, about 3.84 crore people are suffering from diabetes there, and the surprising thing is that about 87 lakh people do not even know that they have diabetes. In such a situation, people think that if they give up sugar and adopt sugar-free things then they will be safe, hence sweeteners like aspartame, sucralose and sugar alcohol are being used instead of refined sugar. One of these is sorbitol.

What is sorbitol?

Sorbitol is a type of sugar alcohol, which is used in low-calorie and sugar-free products. It is commonly found in sugar-free chewing gum, protein bars, low-calorie snacks, cough syrups, some medicines, and some fruits (such as apples, pears). Till now, sorbitol has been considered a better and safer option than sugar. But now questions are being raised on this.

How does it ruin the liver?

Scientists from America’s Washington University (St. Louis) have recently conducted an important study, which has been published in a prestigious journal named Science Signaling. This research was led by Dr. Gary Patty. His team has already proven that fructose (a type of sugar) can cause liver damage and promote fatty liver and even cancer cells. In this new study, scientists found that sorbitol is just one step away from fructose and can cause the same harm in the body that fructose does.

What does sorbitol do in the body?

According to research, when we eat food, glucose (sugar) increases in our body. This glucose can be converted into sorbitol after going into the intestine. Then the sorbitol reaches the liver through the intestine. In the liver, it gets converted into fructose and this is where the problem starts. Fructose is considered a major cause of fatty liver disease, which is affecting about 30 percent of adults worldwide today.
