China has been enraged by the recent report of the US Department of Defense (Pentagon) regarding India-China relations. The report said that China wants to take advantage of the easing of tensions along the LAC with India to stabilize bilateral relations and prevent US-India relations from strengthening further.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said in a press briefing on Thursday (December 25) that China opposes the Pentagon’s comments regarding its national defense policy. He also clarified that China views its relations with India from a strategic and long-term perspective. When Lian was asked whether China would try to stall US-India relations by taking advantage of the reduced tension with India in the disputed border areas? On this he said that China emphasizes on developing relations with India and not on targeting any third country.

Chinese Foreign Ministry retaliated
According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, China is ready to strengthen communication with India, enhance mutual trust and move bilateral relations towards stable, healthy and sustainable development. Let us tell you that this statement of China has come in the context of Pentagon’s ‘Military and Security Developments Involving the People’s Republic of China’ report, in which it has been said that after the tension on the Line of Actual Control (LAC) has reduced, China is trying to stabilize relations with India, so that the deepening of the strategic alliance between India and America can be prevented.

In the Pentagon report, Arunachal Pradesh has been described as important as China’s core interests (Taiwan and the South Sea). Apart from this, China’s growing military relations with Pakistan have also been mentioned.

How are India-China relations now?
Border tensions between India and China have decreased in recent months. After the meeting of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in October 2024, the two countries started high-level talks on border management. Steps like direct flights, visa facility and Kailash Mansarovar Yatra have been taken.

India and China may have ended the border dispute on the LAC (Line of International Control) in eastern Ladakh, but there is a possibility of another dispute in the coming years. According to the recent report of the American Pentagon, China has expressed its claim on Taiwan as well as Arunachal Pradesh and has described it as one of its main interests.

The Pentagon report says that this northeastern state can become a major center of tension in New Delhi-Beijing relations. The report submitted to the US Congress states that Arunachal Pradesh, Taiwan and the South China Sea are of great importance to China. The report said that in order to make the country great again, China’s goal is to build a world-class military power capable of fighting and winning. India has always said that Arunachal Pradesh was and will always be an integral part of the country.

Tension re-emerges over Arunachal
Last year, India and China had signed an agreement for the purpose of withdrawal of troops regarding LAC (Line of International Control) in eastern Ladakh. However, after several months of peace, tension over Arunachal Pradesh has re-emerged recently. Last month, Indian citizen Prema Thongdok, who was traveling from London to Japan, was detained for 18 hours during a stopover in Shanghai.

Arunachal born woman was detained by China
Thongdok had said that Chinese authorities claimed that his passport was invalid because it mentioned Arunachal Pradesh as his birthplace. Eventually, she managed to resume her journey after contacting the Indian Embassy in Shanghai through a friend living in Britain.

Earlier this week, an Indian YouTuber was detained in China because in his video made in support of Thongdok, he had described Arunachal Pradesh as an integral part of India.

China does not accept the McMahon Line
Beijing considers Arunachal Pradesh to be part of China and calls the region Southern Tibet or Zangnan. This is because China does not accept the McMahon Line drawn by the British in 1914. Let us tell you that there was an agreement between Britain and the then independent Tibet regarding this border.

I just love everyone and present this world to you from my perspective. I have no connection with any political agenda.

I am very small in front of these big powers. In the video, Mittal has completely described his horrific experience in China.

Officials stopped as soon as they entered China
Anant Mittal told that as soon as he entered China, he was stopped by the officials of the Immigration Department. A sticker was placed on his passport, causing an alert in their system. An officer detained him and kept him with several other foreign nationals. When no one talked to him for 2 hours, he realized the seriousness of the situation.

Phone and camera confiscated
He further said that Chinese officials later took him to another room and confiscated his phone and camera so that he could not record anything. They had forgotten to check his iPad, with the help of which they recorded the video. In which he is seen saying that hours have passed, but no explanation was given. He told the officers that he was feeling thirsty and scared of not knowing what would happen next.

Vlogger kept asking for food again and again, got nothing
The vlogger was given water once after several hours. He repeatedly asked for food, but did not get anything. Similarly 12-13 hours passed. In the video, he supported a citizen of Arunachal Pradesh detained in China. He realized that perhaps this is why he has to suffer all this. The vlogger feared that he might never be able to return to India. The vlogger said that he hopes that the Indian and Chinese embassies will understand his fears. He held himself responsible for posting the video of Arunachal. He said that we are very small people, we have no status.

Itanagar Police has arrested two people from Jammu and Kashmir for carrying out espionage activities in Arunachal Pradesh. IG (Law and Order) Chukhu Apa said on Tuesday (23 December 2025) that both the men were arrested from Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir on December 18 and have been brought to the state, where they are currently in police custody.

The arrested people have been identified as Ajaz Ahmed Bhat and Bashir Ahmed Ganai. The IG said that another person detained earlier from Miao in Changlang district has been released as investigators did not find any concrete evidence to show his involvement in espionage activities.

Pakistan used to send information related to Arunachal

According to the police officer, the accused were allegedly collecting sensitive information from different parts of Arunachal Pradesh and sharing it with their handlers based in Pakistan. The case first came to light on November 21, when police arrested Nazir Ahmed Malik and Sabir Ahmed Mir, residents of Kupwara district in Jammu and Kashmir, based on specific intelligence regarding their suspected involvement in espionage activities.

These spies were arrested from Arunachal

Nazir Malik was first detained from Ganga village in Itanagar and based on information received from him, Mir was arrested from Abotani Colony in the state capital later the same day. West Siang police had arrested a person named Hilal Ahmed of Kupwara district from a shop in the district headquarters town Aalo. Changlang police had also arrested a person named Ghulam Mohammad Mir from Miao, who was later released by the police.

The Inspector General of Police said that most of the arrested people were blanket sellers, who roamed around in different parts of the state to collect information. He said, ‘We acted on the basis of credible information about an espionage gang operating from Arunachal Pradesh. The team worked hard under the leadership of Itanagar Superintendent of Police Jummar Basar and made these arrests. Two people have been arrested from Kupwara and three from different places in Itanagar capital region.

Do not allow people to stay in the house without verification: Police

Regarding the possibility of further arrests, the Inspector General of Police said that the interrogation of the accused is ongoing and the forensic investigation report is awaited. He said, ‘We will take further action based on the evidence in the coming days. Most of the arrested people are blanket sellers, who used to go to different parts of the state to collect information.

Verification Expressing concern over the laxity in the police, the police officer urged the citizens to remain alert. He said, ‘I appeal to the people of Arunachal Pradesh to get police verification done for security reasons before allowing anyone to stay on their property. Correct Verification Don’t let anyone stay in your house without it.

China on Tuesday (25 November 2025) denied allegations that an Indian woman from Arunachal Pradesh was harassed at Shanghai airport. China said that the action taken by Chinese immigration officials was in accordance with the law and rules.

China denies allegation of harassment of Indian woman

Pema Wangjom Thongdok, an Indian citizen living in Britain, was going from London to Japan on 21 November. He claimed that his three-hour scheduled stay took a turn for the worse when the immigration officials declared his passport invalid simply because Arunachal Pradesh was mentioned as his birthplace.

When asked to respond to the incident with Thongdok, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning claimed that the woman was not subjected to any kind of compulsory measures, detention or harassment, as she has alleged. Mao Ning said that the airline had also made arrangements for rest, food and drinks for him.

Jangnan is our area: China

He said, “We learned that China’s border inspection authorities have completed all procedures in accordance with laws and regulations and fully protected the legal rights and interests of the person concerned.” He also reiterated China’s claims on Arunachal Pradesh, which it calls Jangnan or South Tibet. He said, “Jangnan is a part of China. China has never recognized the so-called Arunachal Pradesh illegally established by India.”

India strongly protested

Sources in Delhi said that India had lodged a strong protest (demarche – a formal diplomatic protest) with China both in Beijing and Delhi on the day of the incident. India clearly told the Chinese side that Arunachal Pradesh is Indian territory without any doubt and the people there have every right to hold Indian passports and travel with it.

He said that the Indian Consulate in Shanghai also took up the matter at the local level and provided full assistance to the stranded passenger. Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu on Tuesday said she was deeply shocked by the incident and called it a violation of international standards and an attack on the dignity of Indian citizens.

Statement of Indian citizen Pema Wangjom Thongdok

Indian citizen Pema Wangjom Thongdok posted on social media that she was detained by Chinese immigration officials at Shanghai airport for 18 hours on the grounds that her passport was invalid as Arunachal Pradesh was listed as her birthplace.

With the help of a friend living in Britain, she somehow managed to contact the Indian Consulate in Shanghai. According to the information, the Consulate officials helped him board a late night flight from the Chinese city.

The border dispute between India and China regarding Arunachal Pradesh is decades old, but adding to this dispute, a new case has come to light, in which a woman resident of Arunachal Pradesh has been severely tortured in China. The woman has alleged that the Chinese authorities had refused to accept her Indian passport as valid. Chinese officials detained and tortured the woman for 18 hours at Shanghai Airport.

Pema Wang Thongdok, a resident of Arunachal Pradesh, said that Chinese immigration officials detained her at the airport for 18 hours on Friday (November 21, 2025). He claimed that Arunachal Pradesh is a part of China, hence the Indian passport of a woman born in Arunachal is invalid. Actually, Pema Wang Thongdok was going from London to Japan on November 21, 2025, but in the meantime her plane stopped for three hours at Shanghai Airport in China, where Chinese officials stopped the woman and took her into custody.

The woman gave information about the incident on X

Pema Wang Thongdok, a resident of Arunachal Pradesh, posted about the incident in China on social media platform In the post, Pema said, ‘Due to China Immigration and China Eastern Airlines Corporation Limited, I was detained for more than 18 hours at Shanghai Airport on Friday (November 21, 2025). They declared my Indian passport invalid because my birthplace is in Arunachal Pradesh, which they declared to be Chinese territory.

According to Thongdok’s statement, Chinese immigration officials had declared his Indian passport invalid after seeing Arunachal Pradesh listed as his birthplace. After this, Chinese officials refused to recognize his Indian citizenship and said that Arunachal is a part of China. Chinese authorities also confiscated his passport and he was barred from boarding onward flights despite having a valid visa for Japan. At the same time, after an Indian woman was taken hostage at Shanghai Airport, Chinese officials tortured her by starving her for 18 hours.
