In particular, bacterial pneumonia is considered more serious than viral pneumonia and may sometimes require hospitalization. It has been said in the report that chest infection becomes fatal when it increases rapidly and starts affecting the supply of oxygen in the body. If timely treatment is not received, swelling in the lungs increases and difficulty in breathing becomes serious. In such a situation, the patient may even need ventilator support.

Different types of infections

There are different types of pneumonia, which determine its severity. Community-acquired pneumonia is usually an outside infection, while hospital-acquired pneumonia is more dangerous because it is caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria and can be difficult to treat. Similarly, infection in patients on ventilator can also prove fatal.

People above 65 years of age are at greater risk

Those people whose immunity is weak are most at risk. Elderly people above 65 years of age, small children, people already suffering from heart or lung disease, smokers or patients taking treatment like chemotherapy are more at risk. In such people, infection can increase rapidly and the condition can worsen quickly.
