Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday visited Sivasagar, Charaideo and Jorhat districts worst affected by the floods and took stock of the situation. During this, he inspected the submerged villages, met the people living in relief camps and reviewed the relief and rescue operations with the district administration.

Talking to journalists in Sivasagar, the Chief Minister said that the flood situation in the state remains very serious. About 100 people are still missing in this flood. Many villages are completely submerged in water and relief and rescue teams have still not been able to reach some areas. We are trying our best to ensure that help reaches every needy person, but at present the situation is worrying. Usually the impact of floods is limited to villages, but this time even cities have been submerged.

Officials said that Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat and Golaghat are the most affected. The situation has worsened due to the water coming from Nagaland. In Charaideo, the Chief Minister visited flood affected villages and relief camps and met the affected families. He also reviewed the rescue and relief operations with the officials. Speaking to the media, he said, “This is an unprecedented situation. A large number of people are taking shelter in relief camps, while many are still trapped in the flood waters. Many people have lost their lives and bodies are still being recovered.”

What did the Chief Minister say?
The Chief Minister said that NDRF, SDRF, Indian Army and the district administration are jointly carrying out rescue and relief operations on a war footing. He also said that the Central Government is providing necessary financial assistance for flood relief and additional assistance will also be sought if needed.

‘Immediate reconstruction of broken embankments of Bhogdoi river’
The Chief Minister visited Solmara and Borigaon in Jorhat district to take stock of the damage caused by the floods and met the affected people. He said, “The flood situation is very serious. The Bhogdoi river has breached the embankments at 5 places. Reconstruction of these embankments will be started immediately. Relief and rescue operations are going on continuously and the government will provide all possible assistance to the affected people.”

CM will visit Golaghat
On reports of possible cloudburst in Mon district of Nagaland, the Chief Minister said that the Assam government is in constant touch with the Nagaland government. After the flood waters recede, the entire matter will be investigated so that the real causes of this disaster can be found out. The Chief Minister will visit Golaghat district on Thursday and review the flood situation there. The state government and rescue agencies are continuing rapid relief and rescue operations throughout Upper Assam.
