In many states of the country, cheap canteens are being run for the poor and laborers. Among these, Amma Unavagam (Amma Canteen) is quite famous in Tamil Nadu, where idli is available for one rupee and sambar rice is available for five rupees. Similarly, there is Maa Canteen in West Bengal, where pulses, rice, vegetables and eggs are available for five rupees. Similarly, Atal Canteen has also been started in Delhi, where a plate of pulses, rice, vegetables and roti is available for five rupees. Now the question arises whether food available at such a cheap rate is really healthy? Do you know what doctors say about this?

How is Atal Canteen in Delhi?

The Delhi government has started 100 Atal canteens on the birth centenary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in December 2025. These canteens are in slum areas, construction sites and poor colonies. Here the price of each thali has been kept at only five rupees, whereas the actual cost ranges from Rs 25-30. The remaining subsidy is given by the government. Dal-rice, roti (up to 300 grams), vegetables (100 grams) and pickles are being provided in its menu. Each canteen provides food twice a day (morning and evening) and serves plates to about 1000 people. The cleanliness of food is checked through FSSAI and lab testing.

How is the food in Amma canteen?

These canteens, which have been running since 2013, are still very popular in Tamil Nadu. Among these, Idli is available for one rupee, Pongal for five rupees, Sambhar-Rice, Lemon Rice and Curry Leave Rice for five rupees. At the same time, curd rice is available for three rupees. This food is hygienic, which is prepared by self-help groups of women.

Maa, how best is the canteen?

Maa Canteen was started in West Bengal from 2021. Here rice, pulses and vegetables are available for five rupees. The government gives subsidy in this. This plate proves to be very helpful for the poor, laborers and financially distressed people.

What is the doctor’s opinion on such plates?

According to Dr. Ritika Khera, nutrition expert and food security researcher in Delhi, these canteens are very good. In these, fresh and hot food is available under government schemes, which is healthier than street carts. Their thalis contain carbohydrates (rice/roti), proteins (dal) and vegetables, which help in reducing malnutrition. These canteens are a good way of food security for the poor. It reduces malnutrition and hygiene problems. However, eating only this food for a long time can lead to anemia or vitamin deficiency.

How to check whether food is healthy or not?

The plate available in these canteens should contain pulses (protein), roti/rice (energy), vegetables (vitamins). The canteen should be FSSAI approved. Staff wear gloves and clean water is used. Food should be fresh, hot and tasty. There should not be much oil and spices in these.

Today (25 December) is the 101st birth anniversary of former Prime Minister of the country and Bharat Ratna awardee Atal Bihari Vajpayee. On this occasion, BJP is organizing many programs across the country. Vajpayee, who was a poet, had his own unique influence in politics. Leaders of opposition parties still remember Atal Bihari and praise him. Atal Bihari Vajpayee also had good relations with opposition leaders, one such incident is related to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Assembly elections are to be held in West Bengal next year in 2026. The fight between BJP and Mamata’s Trinamool Congress (TMC) is well known. Like every time, this time too the main contest in the Bengal elections is between these two parties. There was a time when Mamata Banerjee herself was included in the BJP-led NDA. However, even then she remained a headache for the NDA government.

Mamata Banerjee has been the Railway Minister in the central government led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Even during that time, she often kept raising questions on the functioning of the government. Sometimes there was tension regarding the division of ministries and sometimes there was tension regarding the functioning of the ministries. In Vijay Trivedi’s book on the life of Atal Bihari Vajpayee – ‘Haar Nahi Manunga Ek Atal Jeevan Gatha’, it has been told that when Mamata was the Railway Minister, she used to create some trouble for the government.

When Prime Minister Vajpayee reached Mamta’s house
During that time, Mamata Banerjee once became very angry with the government regarding the increase in the prices of petrol and diesel. After this, George Fernandes was sent to Kolkata by the Central Government to convince him, but Mamata did not meet George. After this, one day suddenly Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee reached Mamata Banerjee’s house and that day Mamata was not in Kolkata.

‘Your daughter harasses you a lot’
After reaching Mamata Banerjee’s house, Vajpayee touched her mother’s feet and asked about her well-being. Atal also said in a joking tone to Mamata Banerjee’s mother that your daughter is very mischievous and troubles her a lot. Mamata’s anger disappeared due to this step of Atal Bihari. After some time, Mamata Banerjee separated from the NDA government on other issues and formed Trinamool Congress in 1998.

Atal Bihari Vajpayee Birth Anniversary: “We have seen the sweet fragrance of those eyes, touch them with your hands and do not blame them for relationships…” This song perhaps touches upon the untold feelings that blossomed in the decades-long relationship between Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Rajkumari Kaul. Vajpayee, who was remembered in the political world for his simplicity, dignity and brilliant poems, had a bond in his personal life which he never named, but also did not reject and carried with him throughout his life.

After all, who was that woman and what was her relationship with Atal Bihari Vajpayee, and why did Vajpayee adopt her daughter into his home? Let us know about this in detail on the occasion of Atal ji’s birth anniversary.

Atal and princess meet

The friendship between former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Rajkumari Haksar (later Kaul) began in the mid-1940s at Victoria College (now Maharani Lakshmibai College), Gwalior. The friendship between the two gradually deepened in the early days, and it became a special bond in the conservative society of that time. Vajpayee had hidden a love letter in Rajkumari’s book, but unfortunately the reply never reached her.

steadfast relationship

With time their relationship deepened. The princess wanted to marry Atal ji, but her family did not consider the man who went to the branch daily as worthy of their daughter. That’s why both of them could not get married. Well… Rajkumari got married to Brij Narayan Kaul, but this marriage could not end her connection with Atal. Vajpayee used to visit Rajkumari’s house frequently and gradually their family and friendship became permanent. He also had deep affection for the princess’s two children, Namita and Niharika.

adopted family

In 1978, when Vajpayee was the Foreign Minister, Rajkumari Kaul, her husband and two daughters started living at his official residence. During this time, he formally adopted Namita Kaul and later Niharika was also considered to be formally adopted. This decision of adoption was not only family-oriented but also emotionally deep. Vajpayee gave these children the same love and protection that is expected from a father.

unspoken and deep bond

There were also political and social debates regarding the nature of the relationship between Rajkumari Kaul and Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Some critics and analysts believed that this relationship was only a deep friendship and family closeness, while some also linked it to an affair, but neither of them ever defined it publicly. Rajkumari clearly said in the only interview that she did not need to clarify her relationship with Vajpayee to anyone, because family respect and intimacy were evident in their relationship.

political and social reaction

This relationship was a unique example of its kind in Indian politics – where the close relationship between a high-ranking leader and an educated woman was presented in different ways by the media and political critics. There were discussions about this from time to time even within organizations like RSS, but Vajpayee neither made it a public issue nor distanced himself from it from his political career.

Family strength and togetherness throughout life

Rajkumari Kaul and Atal Bihari Vajpayee kept their bond above name throughout their lives. At the time of Vajpayee’s death, his adopted daughter Namita played a prominent role in his funeral rites, indicating that the relationship was not merely formal or superficial.

His final years and legacy

Rajkumari Kaul died of a heart attack in 2014. With his passing, an era of that unique friendship also ended. Vajpayee died four years later, in 2018, and his life and political contributions were remembered with great respect by the country. Despite the unpublished layers of his personal life, his importance will always remain as an inspiration in Indian politics.

In the Parliament, leaders are often seen accusing each other and many times the opposition has been seen creating ruckus over the policies of the government, but when a leader is going through a difficult phase, they console each other by calling each other. A similar incident has come to light regarding former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Congress leader Sonia Gandhi. Ashok Tandon, who was media advisor to Atal Bihari Vajpayee, has told about an important conversation that took place between the two years ago.

Ashok Tandon has made many revelations in his book ‘Atal Memoirs’ regarding the NDA government from 1998 to 2004. In the book, Ashok Tandon also mentioned the incident during the Parliament attack of December 13, 2001, when there was a phone conversation between Atal Bihari Vajpayee and the then Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Sonia Gandhi. It is told in the book that when the Parliament was attacked, Vajpayee was at his residence and was watching the action of the security forces on television with his colleagues.

According to Ashok Tandon, ‘Suddenly a call came from Congress President Sonia Gandhi. He said- I am worried about you, are you safe? On this, Atal ji said – Sonia ji, I am safe, I was worried whether you are in the Parliament House… take care of yourself.

Ashok Tandon has also mentioned that incident in the book, when many BJP leaders wanted to make Atal Bihari Vajpayee the Prime Minister. He has written that Vajpayee completely rejected the suggestions coming from within his party that he himself should go to Rashtrapati Bhavan and hand over the post of Prime Minister to his number two leader Lal Krishna Advani. According to Ashok Tandon, ‘Vajpayee was not ready for this. He was of the opinion that a popular Prime Minister becoming President on the strength of majority would not be a good sign for Indian parliamentary democracy. This would be the beginning of a very wrong tradition and he would be the last person to support such a move.

According to Ashok Tandon, Atal Bihari Vajpayee invited the leaders of the main opposition party Congress, so that a consensus could be created for the post of President. He said, ‘I remember that Sonia Gandhi, Pranab Mukherjee and Dr. Manmohan Singh came to meet him. Atal Bihari Vajpayee officially revealed for the first time that NDA has nominated Dr. A.P.J. for the Presidential election. It has been decided to make Abdul Kalam the candidate… There was silence in the meeting for a few moments. Then Sonia Gandhi broke the silence and said that we are shocked by your selection, we have no option but to support him, but we will discuss your proposal and take a decision.

From India’s first woman Prime Minister Indira Gandhi to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, all the big leaders contested elections from two seats simultaneously. There are many reasons for this, including the fear of losing the elections and the dominance of the party. Not only this, there is also a law regarding this in the Constitution. Now the news of Tejashwi Yadav contesting on two seats in Bihar Assembly elections is also strong.

So let us understand in ABP Explainer why big leaders contest elections together on two seats, what is the strategy of elections on two seats and what are its advantages and disadvantages…

Question 1- What is the law for contesting elections on multiple seats simultaneously in India?
answer- Under Section 33(7) of the Representation of the People Act 1951, a candidate can contest from two seats simultaneously in a Lok Sabha or Assembly election. If he wins both the seats, he has to vacate one seat in 14 days. If any candidate does not do this then both the seats are considered vacant under Section 70. In by-elections the party has to field candidates again, which is sometimes risky.

Election Commission of India i.e. ECI told the Supreme Court in 2018 that this rule should be changed to limit it to one seat, so that wastage of resources and voter disappointment is reduced.

Question 2- When did the practice of contesting elections from two seats simultaneously start and which leaders have done this?
answer- This practice started with the first Lok Sabha elections of India in 1951-52. Jawaharlal Nehru presented the first example of this.

In 1952, Vishnu Ghanshyam Deshpande had won by contesting elections simultaneously from Guna and Gwalior in Central India. He was the General Secretary of All India Hindu Mahasabha. Deshpande was the first leader who won by contesting elections on two seats simultaneously. He kept Guna seat with himself and left Gwalior seat.

In 1971, Indira Gandhi also contested elections from two seats simultaneously – Rae Bareli (Uttar Pradesh) and Medak (Andhra Pradesh) and won both the seats. Indira Gandhi kept Medak for herself and by-election was held in Rae Bareli, in which Arun Nehru won.

In 1996, Atal Bihari Vajpayee also contested elections from two seats. He won from both Gwalior and Bhopal seats of Madhya Pradesh. He left Bhopal seat by keeping Gwalior. By-elections were held in Bhopal, in which BJP lost.

In 2004, Sonia Gandhi contested the Lok Sabha elections from Amethi (Uttar Pradesh) and Bellary (Karnataka) and won both the seats. She retained Amethi and by-elections were held in Bellary, in which Congress lost.

In 2014, Narendra Modi also gambled on two seats. He won the seats of Vadodara in Gujarat and Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh. PM Modi kept the Varanasi seat and by-elections were held in Vadodara, in which BJP’s Ranjanben Dhananjay won.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Rahul Gandhi also contested from two seats – Amethi (Uttar Pradesh) and Wayanad (Kerala). He won from Wayanad and lost from Amethi.

Akhilesh Yadav also contested from two seats (Kannauj and Mainpuri) in the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. They won both the seats. He kept Mainpuri seat and left Kannauj seat. A by-election was held on this, where wife Dimple Yadav won.

Now Tejashwi Yadav can also contest from two seats in Bihar Assembly elections. One could be Raghopur and the other Phulparas.

Question 3- Why do big leaders contest elections on more than one seat in Indian politics?
answer- According to senior journalist and political expert Harshvardhan Tripathi, there are two big reasons for this…

Strengthening your and your party’s image: By contesting elections on two seats, leaders strengthen their own and the party’s image. This increases their popularity and influence of the party, strengthens the vote bank and regional base. Like in 2014, PM Modi gave a boost to BJP in Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh by fighting from Vadodara and Varanasi.

Fear of losing elections: Leaders fear that if they lose on one seat, they can secure a place in Parliament or Assembly by winning from another seat. This way they are not thrown out of the House. For a politician, it is a real fight to remain in the House. Like in 2019, Rahul Gandhi lost Amethi, but won from Wayanad.

Question 4- What are the benefits of contesting elections on more than one seat?
answer- According to Harshvardhan Tripathi, it has 3 major benefits…

Worker Mobilization: If a big leader contests elections on more than one seat, then the workers of that area get mobilized, that is, their enthusiasm increases and they become fully active in the elections. This also improves the image of the leader, because he reaches that area with his entire army.

Improving electoral environment: Contesting elections on two seats improves the electoral environment, that is, the environment becomes in favor of that leader. This also shows the strength of the leader that he campaigns on two seats simultaneously and tries his best to win. This creates its positive effect.

Advantages of political party: This also benefits the party, because his name and popularity attracts votes in many areas, which gives support to other candidates of the party. With a big leader contesting elections, the party’s publicity increases in that area and the electoral environment becomes favorable for it. For example, in 2004, Sonia Gandhi helped Congress increase its campaign in Karnataka by contesting elections from Bellary.

Question 5- Are there any disadvantages of contesting elections on more than one seat?
answer- According to political expert Rashid Kidwai, there are 3 major disadvantages of this practice…

By-election expenses: By-election is held when one seat is left, the expenditure of which runs into crores. According to ECI, more than Rs 50 crore was spent on such by-elections from 2004 to 2018.

Broken trust of voters: When a leader leaves a seat, the voters of that area are disappointed. Like in 2004, Bellary voters made Sonia Gandhi victorious, but BJP won the by-election after she left the seat.

Weapon of opposition: Opposition parties promote it by calling it ‘greed’ or ‘cheating’. Like in 2019, BJP had raised questions on Rahul Gandhi’s Wayanad-Amethi. BJP had said about Rahul Gandhi that he is betraying the public by contesting elections from two seats.

Question 6- Will this practice end in the coming time?
answer- Rashid Kidwai says, ‘The law of contesting elections from two seats simultaneously is in the Constitution, due to which the Constitution will have to be amended to change it. This will happen after the consensus of the parties and everyone’s consent. There is no problem or flaw in contesting elections from two seats simultaneously. This system is not going to harm anyone. However, the money spent in this is definitely a problem. But black money is useful for the parties.

At the same time, Harshvardhan Tripathi believes, ‘This practice should end. This practice is a waste of time and money. If a leader wins both the seats and leaves one seat, then it becomes the responsibility of the Election Commission to conduct elections on it. This upsets the public and also breaks their trust.

Emergency was going on. All the big leaders of the opposition were either jailed or under house arrest. By 1976, Indira Gandhi started considering holding elections in the country. For this, he started contacting the jailed leaders Chaudhary Charan Singh, Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Chandrashekhar. She wanted the leaders of the opposition not to come out of jail and make inflammatory rhetoric against him so that the situation does not worsen. First, Indira Gandhi contacted Satyapal Malik, considered close to Charan Singh.

By the end of 1976, many of them were in mood to reconcile. Satyapal Malik said that Indira Gandhi had reached an agreement with Charan Singh in March 1976, after which the farmer leader was released on March 7, 1976.

When Indira sent a message to Charan Singh through Satyapal Malik

Senior journalist Neerja Chaudhary has written in his book ‘How Prime Minister Dyside’ that Indira Gandhi tried to bring a person with a harsh nature like Charan Singh, who was his most bitter critic, through Satyapal Malik. In February 1976, he transferred Satyapal Malik from Fatehgarh jail to Tihar Jail. According to Malik, when he reached Tihar Jail, he was taken directly to the jail superintendent’s room. He was surprised to see that HKL Bhagat, one of the leaders of Congress leader and close to Indira Gandhi, was waiting for him.

HKL Bhagat told Satyapal Malik that you will be kept in the cell next to Charan Singh, you should talk to them. He said to Malik, ‘The Prime Minister wants to hold elections and release opposition leaders. But they do not come out and fuss. Malik said about Charan Singh that he is not against this idea.

You go and meet Indira yourself- Charan Singh spoke to Satyapal

When Satyapal Malik told Charan Singh about HKL Bhagat, he warned Satyapal and said, ‘I do not trust Bhagat. You should get yourself released before these people and then go and talk to Indira Gandhi yourself.

Satyapal Malik was released and met Indira Gandhi. Indira told Malik about Charan Singh, ‘We raise their hands towards them, but they put their hands back.’

Many leaders released with Charan Singh

After the meeting with Indira Gandhi, when Satyapal Malik came in jail and told Charan Singh, he said that I will not be released alone. 4-5 people should also be released with me. Therefore, along with Charan Singh, other leaders like Biju Patnaik, Pilu Modi were also released from jail.

According to Malik, after the release, Charan Singh was stuck on his promise that he would not publicly attack Indira Gandhi. Only once he was emotional and a few weeks after his release, on 23 March 1976, a speech was given for four hours in Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly and Indira Gandhi for four hours of imprisoning one lakh people.

Indira Gandhi announced to hold elections in the country

Similarly, Indira Gandhi also sent his confidants to Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Chandrashekhar and asked him to maintain peace, after which the jailed opposition leaders were released from jail. On 18 January 1977, Indira Gandhi announced the elections, after which elections were held in the country and Indira Gandhi lost this election. The Janata Party won this election and Morarji Desai became the next Prime Minister of the country.

Amit shah in uttarakhand: Union Home Minister Amit Shah, while participating in the ‘Uttarakhand Investment Festival’ held in Rudrapur, Uttarakhand, praised the development work of the state under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami. He said that those who had ever said that the future of small states will not be bright, today the same Uttarakhand is reaching the pinnacle of development. Shah said that the All Weather Road Project was rescued by the Modi government in the Supreme Court and now it is almost complete, so that the Chardham Yatra will run throughout the year.

Amit Shah’s target on Congress
Taking a dig at the Congress, Amit Shah said, ‘When the people of Uttarakhand were struggling for the demand of the state, then the Congress lashed sticks on the agitators. Uttarakhand was formed by BJP and Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. He warned the Congress leaders- ‘When the state is doing well, stop putting bones in the havan in it, otherwise those who are looking left will also disappear.’

A statement on the issue of All Weather Road
Amit Shah said that when some activists were trying to stop the All Weather Road Project, the Modi government did not allow the project to stop by sending its lawyers in the Supreme Court. As a result, this road project has now successfully reached Chardham and will soon be completely operational. Due to this, tourists will be able to come to Uttarakhand for twelve months.

Mentioned the sacred sites of Uttarakhand
Referring to the spiritual importance of Uttarakhand, Shah said – ‘This is the land where one Jyotirlinga, three Shaktipeeth, Char Dham, Panch Kedar, Panch Kedar, Panch Prayag and Sapt Badri are located. No one can stop the development of such a state, whose part is full of faith.

Poor welfare and infrastructure development together
Speaking on the achievements of the Modi government, Amit Shah said- ‘Earlier it was said that if the infrastructure and industry developed, then the poor cannot be good, but Modi ji broke this myth.’ He said that the Modi government took 25 crore people out of the poverty line and run dozens of poor welfare schemes.

Investment of more than one lakh crores came in Uttarakhand
The Home Minister said that despite being a hill state, more than Rs 1 lakh crore has been invested in Uttarakhand due to the efforts of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami.
Out of the MoU of Rs 3.56 lakh crore at the Global Investment Summit of 2023, investment of 1 lakh crore has been landed on the land. In Rudrapur, five inaugurations of Rs 1,271 crore and 14 foundation stones were done today.

Comparison of Atal and Modi’s tenure
Shah said, ‘Atal ji created three new states like Uttarakhand, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh and Modi ji worked to grooming them.’ ‘When Atal ji went, India was the 11th largest economy, and Modi ji has made India the fourth largest economy in the world.’ ‘By 2027, we will show as the third largest economy – you should write it.’

Uttarakhand is a wonderful confluence of culture and nature
Amit Shah said that the rivers of Uttarakhand give half India, drinking water, water for irrigation and life. The saints and Mahatma here have been protecting and developing culture for thousands of years on the banks of the Ganges. Uttarakhand has a unique confluence of nature and culture, which makes it special.

Dimple kapadia bikini: Whenever elections are held in the country, many political parties adopt many Hatkandas to defeat each other. Many Bollywood actors are also included in parties so that people can vote in their name. Once former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had telecast Dimple Kapadia’s film to prevent people from going to Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s rally so that people could not reach the rally.

Dimple Kapadia stepped into Bollywood with the film Bobby. In the first film, he shocked everyone by giving bold scenes. Dimple Kapadia wore a red bikini. Everyone was shocked to see and this film also proved to be a superhit. Indira Gandhi tried to stop the people from Dimple Kapadia’s Bobby. Let us tell you this anecdote.

Dimple Kapadia competed with Atal Bihari Vajpayee
This is in 1977 when the BJP held a rally against Indira Gandhi’s government at Ramlila Maidan. Atal Bihari Vajpayee was going to give speech in this rally. People used to come from far and wide to listen to Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The day Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s rally was, on that day Indira Gandhi’s government got the telecast of Dimple Kapadia and Rishi Kapoor’s film Bobby on TV. This telecast was done so that people sit at home instead of going to the rally and see the film and the rally flopped.

The BJP’s rally started at 4 pm and Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s turn was 9 o’clock in the night but no one moved from there. Everyone listened to his speech and only then left.

Talking about Dimple Kapadia and Rishi Kapoor’s Bobby, it was directed by Raj Kapoor. His film proved to be a superhit. The pair of Rishi Kapoor and Dimple Kapadia were a hit.
