Taking a big step, the police have arrested eight accused in the case of brutal mob lynching that took place in Nawada district of Bihar. This incident took place on December 5 in Bhatta village of Roh block, where 35-year-old Athar Hussain was targeted by asking his name and religion. According to the police, the investigation is ongoing and the search for the remaining accused has been intensified.

The identity of the clothes seller became the cause of death.

Athar Hussain was a resident of Nalanda district and was supporting his family by selling clothes in Nawada area for the last 20 years. On the evening of 5th December, he was returning from Dumri village when 6-7 intoxicated youth surrounded him near Bhatta village. First he was asked his house and name, then when he told his name as Mohammad Athar Hussain, the behavior of the crowd suddenly became violent. He was forcibly taken off his bicycle and robbed of his money, his hands and legs were tied and dragged into a room, where he was subjected to extreme cruelty.

Inhuman torture in the name of affirmation of religion, painful revelation on camera

Before his death, Athar had told on the camera of ABP NEWS how he was brutally treated. It is alleged that to confirm that he was a Muslim, his clothes were removed and his private parts were searched. After this, petrol was poured on the body and hands, legs, fingers and body were burnt with a hot iron rod. Fingers were broken and ears were cut with pliers. 10-15 people beat him brutally with sticks and rods. In this statement recorded at Nawada Sadar Hospital on the night of 7th December, Athar says that every child knows me, yet he was treated like this, this wound is unbearable.

Questions arising on FIR and police action

The police rescued Athar in his injured condition and got him treated, later he was referred to Bihar Sharif Sadar Hospital, where he died on the night of 12 December. The postmortem took place at Nalanda Sadar Hospital under the supervision of the forensic team and magistrate. In this case, Athar’s wife Shabnam had lodged an FIR on the night of 6 December.

Earlier, a complaint had also been filed against Athar accusing him of theft, which further complicated the matter. According to Roh police station in-charge, eight accused have been arrested so far. It is noteworthy that in 2025, incidents of violence and death have also come to light in Nawada in cases like suspicion of theft and witchcraft allegations, due to which serious questions are being raised on law and order.

Shabnam Praveen told that she had lodged an FIR in Roh police station at around 8 pm on 6th December. They allege that before this, a separate FIR was registered at 10 am on December 6 by falsely accusing Athar Hussain of theft. Shabnam says that a deliberate attempt was made to show her husband as a criminal, whereas the truth is that he was targeted by asking his name and religion. He alleged that he did not get any concrete support from the administration after the incident.

Younger brother Mohammad Chand raised the question whether Muslims do not have the right to live in Bihar. Is action taken only after seeing religion?

Athar recorded his statement before his death

Wife Shabnam told that during treatment at Nawada Sadar Hospital on December 7, Athar Hussain had narrated his entire ordeal to the ABP correspondent in a trembling voice. He had said that the police saved him and got him treated, but the wounds were so deep that his body was not supporting him. He died during treatment at Bihar Sharif Sadar Hospital on the night of 12 December. The postmortem took place at Nalanda Sadar Hospital under the supervision of the forensic team and magistrate.

Family members demanded action from police

According to Roh police station in-charge Ranjan Kumar regarding this incident, four accused Sonu Kumar, Ranjan Kumar, Sachin Kumar and Shri Kumar have been arrested in this case, while the search for others is going on. However, family members are calling this action inadequate. Son Istekhar Hussain said with downcast eyes that we only want justice from the government and administration. This case once again raises serious questions on the increasing incidents of mob lynching in Nawada.
