Republic Day 2026: On the occasion of 77th Republic Day, a wave of patriotism is once again being seen on the India-Pakistan border near Amritsar. A huge crowd gathered at the Republic Day Retreat Ceremony at Attari. In this, cultural presentations of school children added a special national color to the ceremony. But even today many people consider Attari and Wagah Border to be the same. Let us know what is the difference between the two.

Attari and Wagah

The biggest difference is in geographical location. Attari is the last village on the Indian side of the India-Pakistan border and is situated in Amritsar district of Punjab. On the other hand, Wagah is a village on the Pakistani side which is situated in Lahore district of Pakistan. Although they are across the border facing each other but they are not in the same place.

Both the villages are at a distance of about 3 kilometers. The international border separating India and Pakistan is known as the Zero Line. The Indian part of this line is officially called Attari Border. Along with this, the part of Pakistan is known as Wagah Border. What people commonly call the Wagah Border is actually a common ceremonial zone spread on both sides of the border.

evening military parade

The famous evening military parade is known as the Wagah Border Ceremony. But the Indian audience joins it on the Atari side. On the Indian side, Border Security Force personnel perform the ceremonies at Attari while Pakistan Rangers perform their part at Wagah.

This daily Beating Retreat ceremony began in 1959 and has since become a powerful symbol of controlled rivalry and mutual protocol between the two countries. Simultaneous lowering of flags, aggressive marching and goose stepping are the main attractions that attract the crowd.

Historical background and confusion in naming

The confusion between Attari and Wagah has deep historical roots. Wagah village existed before partition but in 1947 the Radcliffe Line divided it between India and Pakistan. The eastern part came to India while the western part went to Pakistan. Attari is named after Sardar Sham Singh Attari Wala, a great general in the army of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. In 2007, the Government of India officially changed the name of the border from Wagah Border to Attari Border to honor his legacy. Despite this, the old name is still used more.
