Hearing related problems are increasing rapidly all over the world. According to the World Health Organization’s first World Report on Hearing, by the year 2050, about 2.5 billion people of the world i.e. one out of every four people will be suffering from some level of hearing problem. Of these, approximately 70 crore people will need special hospitality and rehabilitation services related to hearing and hearing. ‌ In such a situation, let us tell you today why one out of every four people will have hearing problems by 2050 and what else came to light in the WHO report.

What is the situation now?

According to WHO report, at present one in every five people in the world has some kind of problem in hearing. Not getting timely treatment and care is a major reason for the increase in cases. WHO says that 80 percent of such cases occur in low-income countries, where there is a severe shortage of experts and resources. Apart from this, infections, congenital diseases, noise pollution, prolonged exposure to loud noises and unhealthy lifestyle are affecting the ability to hear. At the same time, about 60 percent of cases in children can be prevented through vaccination, better motherhood, child care and timely treatment of ear infections. At the same time, listening to loud music is becoming a big danger among the youth. According to the United Nations report, more than one billion people aged between 12 to 35 years are in danger due to listening to loud music through smartphones and headphones.

Major deficiency in health system is also the reason

WHO report shows that there is a huge shortage of ear, nose and throat experts, audiologists and speech therapists in many countries. At the same time, ear and hearing related care still does not get adequate space in primary health services. Due to this, early identification and timely treatment is not possible. Apart from this, experts say that early detection of hearing problem is very important. With the help of new technologies, investigation is now possible even with less resources. Many ear diseases can be treated with medicine or surgery. Where hearing cannot be restored, options like hearing aids, cochlear implants and speech therapy prove helpful. WHO estimates that for every dollar the government invests in ear and hearing services, the government can get about $16 in social and economic benefits. At the same time, the effect of hearing problem is not limited to conversation only. It also affects education, employment and mental health. Apart from this, according to WHO, it can also increase the risk of social isolation and depression.
