The host of the Badminton World Championship 2026 will be India. After 17 years, this tournament is going to be held in India. Earlier in 2009, this tournament took place in Hyderabad, now it is the second time in history when India is hosting it. On Monday, the Badminton World Federation announced the name of New Delhi as the host city.

The announcement was made at the closing ceremony of the 29th edition in the city of Paris, France. On this occasion, Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul, President of Badminton World Federation, and General Secretary of Badminton Association of India Sanjay Mishra were present. Mishra promised that India will maintain the grandeur displayed in Paris.

In a BAI release, Mishra said, “We assure that India will make 100 percent effort to maintain and carry out the same standards of excellence and grandeur displayed by Paris. We are eager to welcome the badminton family to Delhi.”

India won only one medal in Paris

The Badminton World Championship 2025 ended on 31 August, in which India won only one medal. The top country was China, which won a total of 6 medals including 2 gold. Japan won a total of 3 medals including 1 gold. Malaysia, South Korea and Denmark won 2-2 medals. Thailand, Canada, France, India and Indonesia won 1–1 medals.

For India, the pair of Satvik Raj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty won the bronze medal for India, which is India’s only medal in the tournament. The pair defeated Liang Wei Keng and Wang Chang of China (21-19 21-15, 21-17) in Round-16. In the quarter-finals, Satwik and Shetty defeated Olympic medalist Malaysia’s Aaron Chia/Soh Wui Yik 21-12 21-19.

India last hosted in 2009

The Badminton World Championship was hosted by India in the first and last time in 2009. China was also at the top in that edition, China won a total of 10 medals including 4 gold. India could not win a single medal then.

The Indian badminton team, which won a bronze medal in the World University Games (WUG) in the ongoing World University Games (WUG), has been involved in controversies as six of the 12 selected players have been stopped from participating due to alleged administrative lapse.

12 players were selected to represent India in the competition but only six were allowed to compete as the officials failed to present all the names properly during the meeting of the managers on 16 July.

According to sources, BV Rao and Ajit Mohan were officers of the Indian University Union (AIU) who attended the meeting. AIU, the nodal organization for university level sports in the country, has accepted this incident.

AIU Secretary Dr. Pankaj Mittal refused to make any further comment and told PTI, “We have been informed about it and the matter is being investigated.”

According to a source, the case was not just of an error but the result of ‘systematic irregularities’ which started from the selection trial held at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) in Bhubaneswar.

The source said, “During the meeting of managers, officers were given a letter with a list of all 12 players of India. It was their responsibility to read it carefully, check the non -existence or injured players and accordingly confirm or adjust the names. However, he took it lightly. ”

He said, “The names of the players who did not participate in the trial were also there. They came here only to enjoy it. He also made a basic mistake in the meeting. He had to declare which player would play in solo, doubles and mixed category but he did not inform about it properly. ”

Sunith Dayanand, Satish Kumar Karunakaran, Devika Sihag, Tasnim Mir, Varshini Vishwanath Sri and Vaishnavi Khadkekar were among the six players who participated in the mixed team event.

India defeated Macau but lost to Hong Kong in the group stage. Then after defeating the US in the round of 16 and Malaysia in the quarter -finals, Chinese lost to Chinese Taipei in the semi -finals.

Rohan Kumar, Darshan Pujari, Aditi Bhatt, Abhinash Mohanty, Viraj Kawawar and Alisha Khan were part of the 12 -member team but did not get a chance to play. The priest has written a letter to the Badminton Association of India (BAI) demanding a thorough investigation.

He wrote in the email, “This level mismanagement has caused a lot of emotional trouble to the affected players, especially when Team India has won the historic medal in the Games. Players who were excluded from the nomination list have been denied to contribute on the field and give a chance to be a part of this achievement. ”

The priest wrote, “Till date the managers have not given any accountability or concrete explanation. At this stage of international representation where the athletes’ career, dreams and morale are at stake, only apologizing cannot be enough. ”

However, the source alleged that the players who actually topped the trial were excluded from the mixed team event while they were part of the team.
