Nepal’s Home Minister Sudhan Gurung has resigned within 26 days of assuming the post. On Wednesday (April 22, 2026), he has decided to step down, citing an impartial investigation into the concerns raised about his financial assets. Sudhan Gurung has given information about this by posting on Facebook.

Sudhan Gurung was accused of having a business partnership with controversial businessman Deepak Bhatta and questionable investments in micro insurance companies. Deepak Bhatta has been accused of money laundering and investigation is going on against him.

Sudhan Gurung had taken an aggressive stance against corruption after becoming the Home Minister and now he is facing criticism due to his personal investments. He has decided to step down after widespread protests. In a Facebook post, Sudhan Gurung wrote, ‘To ensure a fair investigation into the allegations related to me and to avoid conflict of interest while holding office and to avoid any influence on the investigation process, I have decided to resign from the post of Home Minister.’

Sudhan Gurung said, ‘For me, morality is above position and there is no greater power than public trust. The ongoing Gen Z movement in Nepal, which is demanding good governance, transparency and accountability, has also given the same message that public life should be clean and leadership should be accountable. If anyone questions the government formed by the blood and sacrifice of my 46 brothers and sisters, then the answer is morality. He has also said that he will fully cooperate in the investigation of the allegations against him.

Sudhan Gurung has appealed that a lot of rumors are spread so do not speculate. He said, ‘Allegations and truth are not the same. Decisions should be taken on the basis of evidence, not on emotions. I will support every decision taken by the party and will fully cooperate in the investigation.

Non-political mechanisms like ‘Student Council’ or ‘Voice of Students’ will be developed within the next 90 days to listen to the real problems of students in place of politics. Its objective is to make the voice of the students truly visible in the institutions.

Citizenship requirement abolished

Now the requirement of Nepalese citizenship has been abolished for studies up to graduation. The advantage of this will be that no student’s studies will be stopped due to documentary hurdles. Also, the examination results of universities will now be published on time as per the calendar set by the ministry.

ban on foreign names

Educational institutions running in the country with foreign names like Oxford, Pentagon, St. Xavier will have to change their names to original Nepali names this year. This step has been taken to nationalize education and promote local identity.

Traditional examinations have been abolished for children up to class 5. Now the progress of children will be assessed through ‘Alternative Assessment System’. Its objective is to reduce examination stress among children and focus on their overall development.

The Balen government believes that the delay in examination results in universities and the disruption of the academic calendar were the result of political interference.
