Bangladesh Politics: Bangladesh is going through a deep political crisis these days. Mohammad Yunus, who is the head of the interim government of the country, is now considering resigning from his post. He clearly stated during a meeting of the Advisory Council in Dhaka that working in the current political situation is becoming impossible for him.

This is not just a personal decision but reflects the failure of the entire political system, where it is becoming difficult to create minimum consensus among political parties. Yunus’s statement that he feels as hostage reflects the instability of the country.

Human corridor and army displeasure over Myanmar border
Another significant turn took place when it was revealed that the Yunus government along with the US had planned to set up a human corridor on the Bangladesh-Myanmar border. This deal was secretly carried out, which angered Army Chief General Waqar-e-Zaman. He also warned the government by giving an ultimatum to conduct elections by December. It is clear that there is a huge confrontation between the country’s civil and military system, which is a dangerous sign for the future.

Opposition of opposition and student organizations – political pressure is increasing
Yunus is surrounded not only with political parties but also to student organizations and general public. Opposition parties have intensified protests on the road demanding elections by the end of this year. The demand to take out leaders like Mahfooz Asif and Khalilurrahman out of the government has given further air to this protest. This shows that the public and political organizations are now completely dissatisfied with the current government.

This interim government of Bangladesh was formed last year after Sheikh Hasina’s sudden flee and coup. Since then Yunus was given the responsibility of keeping the country stable till the formation of a permanent government, but it seems that this experiment is now moving towards failure.
