Bangladesh Protest: The political, social and economic crisis that Bangladesh is going through in the last few months has increased the concern of the entire world including India. This Muslim-majority country, which once carved its own liberal, relatively secular identity apart from Pakistan, is today in the news due to the rise of fundamentalism, social tension and allegations of increasing violence against minorities. After the ouster of Sheikh Hasina from power, political instability, weak law and order, huge decline in investment and lack of revenue have put Bangladesh’s economy in deep crisis.

Bangladesh in deep debt

The situation has become so bad that the country has to depend on loans and government expenditure is continuously increasing. According to available data, the total government debt of Bangladesh has increased by about 14 percent in the last one year and by June 2025 it is likely to increase to more than Tk 21 lakh crore, which includes both foreign and domestic debt.

According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Bangladesh’s external debt position has reached the medium risk level and the debt-to-export ratio has reached about 162 percent, which is considered well above the safe limit. If exports decline further, the country may be at risk of bankruptcy due to a serious financial crisis.

Why did this happen?

Due to this economic pressure, Bangladesh has had to decide to import 50 thousand tonnes of rice from India at concessional rates, which will cost it less than other countries and save crores of rupees. There has been trade relations between the two countries.

Although there has been some tension in India-Bangladesh relations after the formation of the new interim government, India has historically provided financial assistance, loans and support to Bangladesh in infrastructure development such as roads, bridges and power projects, which shows the importance of relations between the two countries even in the current crisis.

Political tension has increased a lot in Bangladesh at present. The decision of the International Criminal Tribunal (ICT) on the case of alleged crimes related to the ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is going to come on Monday (November 17). A day before the decision, Hasina’s party Awami League has announced a ‘complete bandh’ across the country. This bandh has been done at a time when the Yunus government has already banned all the activities of the Awami League. For this reason, high alert continues in the entire country.

Meanwhile, an audio message of Sheikh Hasina has surfaced, in which she has appealed to her supporters to intensify their agitation on the streets. Shortly after the message was received, reports of country-made bomb blasts were received in Dhaka. On Sunday night, two blasts took place outside the house of interim government advisor Syeda Rizwana Hasan, while another blast took place in Karwan Bazaar area. It is a matter of relief that there is no news of anyone being injured.

Orders to open fire on those inciting violence

To stop the uproar, Dhaka Police Commissioner Sheikh Mohammad Sajjad Ali has given clear instructions to the officers that if anyone attacks the police or spreads violence, action can be taken against him by opening fire. Before the decision, security has been greatly increased in Dhaka.

What are the allegations against Sheikh Hasina?

Today the ICT is going to pronounce the verdict of the case in which Sheikh Hasina, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and former Inspector General of Police Chaudhry Abdullah Al-Mamun face serious allegations. It is alleged that during the student movement in July-August 2024, he took such steps which increased violence and committed crimes against humanity. The hearing of this case ended on October 23 and the punishment will be announced today.

Peaceful atmosphere in many cities

After the announcement of the bandh on Sunday, an atmosphere of peace was seen in many cities of Bangladesh. Roads remained almost empty, markets opened late and people remained in their homes. Since the government has banned the party’s activities, Awami League leaders are now issuing messages through social media from secret places.

Sheikh Hasina termed the allegations against her wrong

Sheikh Hasina has denied all the allegations against her. But amidst increasing tension, Bangladesh is going through a very important phase.

In the evening of Friday (5 September 2025) in Dhaka, the central office of Bangladesh’s ethnic party (JAPA) was attacked by miscreants and set fire. This incident took place in Ramna police station area of the capital. The fire department received information at 7 pm that unknown people set fire to the office after throwing brick and stones. This is the second time in the last 10 days when the Japa office was targeted.

Japa General Secretary Shamim Haider Patwari alleged that the attack is a conspiracy of the Gono Rights Council. He demanded a judicial inquiry and cancellation of registration of Gono Rights Council. Japa Presidium member Rezaul Karim also accused the Shahabag rally organizers of conspiracy to attack. He says that Yunus’s interim government failed to stop the crowd and failed to provide security.

What did the Gono Rights Council say on the allegations?

The Gono Rights Council denied these allegations and said that they had nothing to do with the attack. Awami League alleges that the Yunus government is responsible for the incident. The attacks are being carried out with the help of Younis’s interim government. Crowd is spreading terrorism under the interim government in Bangladesh. This attack is a conspiracy to weaken democratic system and political parties.

Sufi saint’s body insulted

Another shocking incident came to light in Rajbari district. A group of radical Islamists attacked the dargah of local Sufi saint Nura Pagla. His body was removed from the tomb and burnt in front of everyone. After this incident, there was a violent clash between the saint’s followers and the Islamists. Radical groups describe Sufi practices as non-Islamic.

Increasing violence in Bangladesh

Violence has increased in Bangladesh since the removal of the Awami League government in August 2024 and the interim government of Muhammad Yunus. Meanwhile, the attacks on pro -Hasina parties and individuals have intensified. With political instability, religious extremism is also coming to the fore.

Bangladesh ex president: Political pride in Bangladesh does not seem to stop. Former President Mohammad Abdul Hamid left for Thailand at 3 am and left the country. He rode a Thai Airways flight from Dhaka International Airport. He was seen sitting on a wheelchair in Lungi. When the interim government woke up and came to know what happened, he suspended and transferred the authorities and formed a high -level investigation.

Former President Hamid was among those against whom the steps taken against the protesters were being investigated during the anti -Sheikh Hasina agitation last year. Abdul Hamid was the President of Bangladesh for two terms from 2013 to 2023. He is also a co-accused in a case of murder filed against Sheikh Hasina and her colleagues during the agitation in 2024.

Former President is accused in murder case

Former minister Obaidul Kadar is also co-accused in this case.

High level committee constituted

According to the news agency United News of Bangladesh, the interim government of Muhammad Yunus has formed a high -level committee under the leadership of Education Advisor CR Abrar to investigate former President Abdul Hamid to Thailand. His family members say that he had gone for treatment with his brother and brother -in -law, but his political opponents say he has run away to avoid trial in Bangladesh.
