Bangladesh is currently going through the most stressful period in its political history. The verdict on anti-humanity crimes against ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is going to come soon. Due to this, instability has increased in the entire country. Meanwhile, Sheikh Hasina’s son and key advisor Sajib Wajed (Joy), while speaking to Reuters, said that if the interim government does not take steps to lift the ban imposed on Awami League, then her supporters will not allow the national elections proposed to be held in February. In the Dhaka court where the case against ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is going on, there is a fear that 78-year-old Hasina will be convicted in absentia. She has been calling all these allegations politically motivated and false.

The United Nations report shows that between July 15 and August 5, 2024, the protests took the country to an almost war-like situation. In these three weeks, approximately 1,400 people were killed and thousands were injured. The cause of many deaths has been attributed to firing by security forces. This violence is considered to be the most serious after the independence movement of 1971. Besides, Bangladesh’s $340 billion garment industry has also been hit hard, on which the country has the biggest economic dependence.

Sheikh Hasina’s exile in India

After leaving the country in August 2024, Sheikh Hasina is currently living in New Delhi. Sajib Wajed said that the decision coming from the court seems to be pre-decided and the punishment can also be quite harsh. He said that the Government of India is providing a safe environment to Hasina. Here he is being treated the same way as any head of state. However, Hasina had earlier also admitted that she remains extra cautious due to security reasons. The killing of his entire family in the 1975 military coup has always kept his life under the shadow of insecurity.

Bomb blasts, buses on fire in Dhaka before the verdict

As the time of decision is approaching, tension is increasing in Dhaka and surrounding areas. On November 12 alone, more than 30 crude bomb blasts were confirmed in the city. Many buses and vehicles were set on fire. To handle the situation, the government has imposed a ban on people standing in crowded areas. More than 400 border guards have been deployed in the capital. Police are also arresting many Awami League workers. It is alleged that they were involved in conspiracies of sabotage and attacks.

Elections in question after ban on Awami League

In May 2024, the interim government had stopped the political activities of the Awami League citing national security and allegations of corruption. The electoral registration of the party is also suspended. Wajed says that in such a situation the idea of elections in the country is incomplete. He clearly said that any attempt to hold elections by keeping Awami League out will give rise to a big movement and if the international community remains silent then Bangladesh may get engulfed in violence even before the elections.

Bangladesh Hindu Violence: Interim Prime Minister of Bangladesh and Nobel Peace Prize winning economist Mohammad Yunus has termed the news of violence against the Hindu community in his country as completely fake news. He claimed that fake news has become the specialty of India.

Mohammad Yunus gave this statement in an interview to journalist Mehdi Hasan. Hasan had asked him that in November last year, about 30,000 Hindus had demonstrated against your rule. He said that there have been thousands of attacks on his community. US President Donald Trump had also described the violence in Bangladesh as barbaric. In such a situation, what steps did you take to stop this violence?

Mohammad Yunus said this

In response to Mehdi Hasan’s question, Yunus said, ‘First of all, all these news are fake news. They cannot be trusted. A big specialty of India today is fake news. When asked whether he was saying that the reports of violence were exaggerated or completely false, Yunus said, ‘Sometimes there are some disputes, be it a land dispute, a family dispute or some personal issue. If I have a Hindu neighbor and there is a dispute between us regarding the land mark, then people call it a Hindu-Muslim dispute, whereas in reality it is not so.

‘The interim government is very cautious on this’

Yunus said that the interim government formed after Sheikh Hasina was removed from power amid violent protests in 2024 is very alert on this issue. India always raises this issue, so we are taking special care.

‘Hindus should see themselves as citizens’

When Yunus was asked what message he would like to give to the Hindu community of Bangladesh, he said, ‘I tell them not to say that I am a Hindu, protect me. Say that I am a citizen of this country, and I want all the rights that the state gives to its citizens. With this he will stand with all those people of the country who have not received equal treatment from the state. Don’t isolate yourself.

Yunus said in the interview that India’s decision to grant asylum to Sheikh Hasina has become the main obstacle in the relations between the two countries. He also clarified that the upcoming elections in Bangladesh will be held within six months.

Bangladesh Politics: Bangladesh’s Care Taker PM Mohammad Yunus has once again reiterated that he will not hold the post even one day after June 30 next year. He gave this statement in a meeting with the recent political parties. According to The Sun’s report, his press secretary Shafiqul Alam said that Professor Yunus clarified that the elections will be held between December 2025 to June 2026 and he will not hold the post after June 30. This announcement has made Bangladesh’s unstable political situation more clear, where heavy differences continue between the interim government, the opposition and the ruling party.

Bangladesh’s Care Taker PM Mohammad Yunus also said in the meeting that we are in a war -like situation. Awami is trying to destabilize the country after the league ban. We have to avoid this. This statement indicates that Bangladesh is in a social and politically highly sensitive situation, where maintaining peace has become a challenge.

BNP demands election date and cabinet restructuring
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) recently demanded Yunus to hold elections by December 2025. Apart from this, he has appealed to remove controversial advisors and create a new advisory council. On the matter, senior BNP leader Khandekar Musharraf Hussain joined Yunus at his residence and requested the announcement of a clear election roadmap.

Consider to resign
According to sources, Younus told the leaders of the National Citizen Party (NCP) earlier this week that they are considering resigning. He also said that he is not able to work due to lack of consensus among political parties. In Thursday’s cabinet meeting, he also reiterated the same thing, although his colleagues celebrated him not to resign. Yunus said that elections will be held between December 2025 and 30 June 2026, but this clear deadline or date has not been announced yet.
