The political atmosphere in Bangladesh has become heated after the results of the general elections held on 12 February. Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) got a big victory in this election, while radical Islamic party Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh secured second place by winning a record 68 seats. The head of the interim government, Muhammad Yunus, had described the elections as free and fair, but now serious questions are being raised on it.

The latest report of anti-corruption organization Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) has claimed that some kind of irregularity was seen in about 40 percent of parliamentary seats. According to the report, candidates themselves lodged complaints of irregularities on 28.6 percent seats. This makes it clear that the allegations are not merely conjecture, but have been made directly by the election participants.

Questions raised on the role of Election Commission

The most serious allegations in the TIB report have been made regarding the functioning of the Election Commission. It has been said that such organizations and individuals, who have links with political parties, were recognized as election observers. This has raised doubts about the fairness of the election process. The report also mentions that an experienced institution did not get registration as an observer despite applying multiple times, while two institutions associated with advisors to the interim government were approved. Such decisions have increased concerns about transparency.

Criticism over payments to foreign observers

The report also said that the Election Commission paid foreign observers. Critics argue that taking payments from the same institution that is supposed to be monitored creates a conflict of interest. This may raise questions on electoral legitimacy.

Displeasure of political parties and questions on affidavits

Various political parties of Bangladesh have also expressed dissatisfaction regarding the allocation of election symbols. TIB has also raised questions on the scrutiny process of the affidavits filed by the candidates. The report asked whether the sources of income and assets of the candidates were properly verified and whether they were legally acquired. After these allegations came to light, the debate regarding fairness of elections in Bangladesh has intensified. Although the government has not yet given a detailed response to the report, opposition parties are calling it a serious challenge to the democratic process.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee sent flowers and sweets to Bangladesh Prime Minister-elect and Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader Tarique Rahman on her party’s victory. According to Bangladesh’s state news agency Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS), BNP media cell member Atiqur Rahman Ruman accepted the gift at the party chairman’s political office in Gulshan.

Mamata Banerjee congratulated the people of Bangladesh and Tariq Bhai on social media platform X on Friday (13 February 2026). He also extended good wishes before the holy month of Ramadan. He wrote that hearty congratulations and advance Ramadan Mubarak to all the brothers and sisters of Bangladesh. Also congratulated Tariq Rehman, his party and other parties for this big victory. He also expressed hope that relations between India and Bangladesh always remain cordial.

My hearty congratulations, shubhonandan, to all my brothers and sisters, all the people, in Bangladesh. My advance Ramazan mubarak to all of them.

For this great victory, my congratulations to my Tarique-Bhai, his party, and all the parties. Pray, you all be well and happy.…

— Mamata Banerjee (@MamataOfficial) February 13, 2026

relationships in critical times

This development has happened at a time when relations between India and Bangladesh are considered sensitive for some time. There has been a change in the political situation after the resignation of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Concern has also been raised about incidents of violence against minority Hindus in recent months.

invitation to prime minister modi

According to sources, an invitation has been sent to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Tariq Rehman. The ceremony is scheduled for February 17. However, according to the information, Prime Minister Modi is likely to attend a bilateral meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron in Mumbai that day, hence the chances of him going to Dhaka are said to be low.

mathematics of election results

In the elections for the 350-member Parliament, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party-led alliance won the majority by winning 212 seats. Whereas the alliance of 11 parties led by Jamaat-e-Islami got 77 seats and will remain in the role of opposition. Official figures have been released by the Election Commission. This election result and subsequent political activities have once again focused attention on India-Bangladesh relations. The direction of diplomatic dialogue between the two countries will be important in the coming days.

In the results of the 13th Parliament elections in Bangladesh, Tariq Rahman’s BNP has won an overwhelming majority in the entire country. Whereas Jamaat-e-Islami has performed strongly in the border districts adjoining West Bengal. Bangladeshi Satkhira, Kushtia, parts of Khulna belt and Rangpur areas adjacent to India have emerged as the strongest clusters of Jamaat.

How was the Jamaat cordon formed on the Indian border?

These Bangladeshi areas bordering India together form a continuous arc, which is directly connected to West Bengal, Assam and the Siliguri Corridor. Jamaat won a good number of seats in these border districts, while BNP swept urban and remittance-affected areas like Sylhet, Chittagong and Mymensingh.

Among these, Satkhira district is the most special, where Jamaat has captured all the 4 parliamentary seats. In Kushtia also, 3 out of 4 seats went to the account of Jamaat. Jamaat showed a strong hold in Rangpur area also. In other border areas like Naogaon-2, Joypurhat-1, Sherpur-1 and Gaibanda-1 also, Jamaat or its allies were ahead. These victories are based on rural, mosque and madrassa networks that have long had local influence. These voters are not anti-urban, but from deep rural areas, where old memories of violence and religious networks are strong.

Should India be worried about this?

This is a matter of concern for India, especially from the point of view of border security of West Bengal. Quoting Indian intelligence agencies, the report said that this growing political legitimacy of Jamaat will give confidence, cover and local security to the radicals. Earlier activities used to be secret, now they can be semi-open. The threat is less from bombs but more from radicals, such as lectures at Friday prayers, madrassa courses, WhatsApp preachers, cross-border marriages. Earlier infiltration focused on numbers, but now infiltration is selective, including trained ideology carriers, fund couriers and digital handlers. This number is undoubtedly less, but will have more impact.

Danger of communal polarization in India

Some reports quoting Indian intelligence sources say that there is no clear ISI footprint, but financial and ideological channels familiar to NGOs, charities and migrant routes are becoming active again, which will prove to be a classic deniability playbook. Small migration waves could increase communal polarization and political tensions in India. The pressure on border Hindu minorities may first increase, such as land disputes, threats and stealth displacement.

Overall, this regional strengthening of Jamaat is a new challenge for India despite the national victory of BNP. There may be a change in relations after the formation of Tariq Rehman’s government, but security agencies are alert due to the increasing presence of fundamentalism on the border. The report clearly stated that the danger is not from immediate attacks, but from the formation of a radical ecosystem in the long run. Surveillance on the India-Bangladesh border may increase further in the coming days.

After the huge victory of BNP in Bangladesh and the possibility of Tariq Rahman becoming the Prime Minister, India is now planning to strengthen the relations between the two countries. India is considering this election as an opportunity for a ‘diplomatic reset’. The Central Government believes that stability and trust can last for a long time only with a democratically elected government. India has always worked with elected governments and now the BNP victory is being seen as a victory for the ‘spirit of 1971 and liberal values’.

India’s positive stance on Tariq Rehman

Indian officials said they were ‘cautiously optimistic’ for Tariq Rehman. He believes that Tariq can adopt a more practical approach keeping in mind the economic realities and regional stability. Relations had deteriorated in the last few months during the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus. India says that government created ‘anarchy and instability’, delayed the restoration of democracy, blames India and the Indian media. But now India wants to engage with the elected government in a constructive manner.

What is India’s main strategy?

There are 4 main main strategies of India. These:

Supporting democracy and rebuilding trust.

To remain vigilant on security and minority rights.

Increasing cooperation on economic and regional issues by considering Tariq Rehman as a practical leader.

A senior Indian representative, Tariq Rehman, is likely to attend the swearing-in ceremony, which will be a sign of improving relations. Earlier, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar had gone to Dhaka to pay tribute to Khaleda Zia’s death and met Tariq.

India has also started working on this strategy. After BNP’s victory, Prime Minister Narendra Modi immediately called Tariq Rehman and congratulated him. PM Modi wrote on X that both the countries have deep historical and cultural relations. He said, ‘I look forward to working with you to strengthen our multi-dimensional relations and advance our shared development goals. India will continue to support a democratic, progressive and inclusive Bangladesh.

How will the spoiled relations of Mohammad Yunus be improved?

The interim government gave more space to Jamaat-e-Islami and Islamic fundamentalist groups, which is a matter of concern for India. These groups are pro-Pakistan and have been involved in attacks on minorities (especially Hindus). India repeatedly expressed concern over the security of Hindu minorities, but the interim government did not take appropriate steps. Now it is expected that Tariq Rehman’s government will keep an eye on border security, infiltration and regional stability. Relations with India were sometimes strained during BNP’s previous tenures, but now Tariq may be more cooperative due to economic needs. India’s focus is now on practical cooperation. India now wants cooperation in trade, security, water sharing (like Teesta) and anti-terrorism.

Which party got how many seats in Bangladesh?

Tariq Rehman’s BNP won 209 seats and the alliance won 212 seats. That means the majority mark of 151 has been crossed. There are 10 parties including BNP in this alliance. The alliance of 11 parties led by Dr. Shafiqur Rehman’s Jamaat-e-Islami has got only 77 seats. Jamaat Chief Rehman has won from Dhaka-15 seat. National Citizen Party (NCP), which is part of the Jamaat alliance, got 6 seats. This is the same NCP, which emerged from the anti-government student movement of July-August 2024. This is the first election in which Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League party did not contest due to the ban. On May 12, 2025, the Election Commission had also suspended the registration of the party.

The results of the 13th Parliament elections in Bangladesh once again proved how easily small parties can be ‘cleansed’. While BNP won a landslide victory with 216 seats and Jamaat-e-Islami bagged 68 seats, Bangladesh Jatiyo Party (BJP) got only one seat and that too from Bhola-1 seat, where party chairman Andaliv Rahman Partho won on the ‘bullock cart’ symbol by securing 1,04,462 votes. His nearest rival was Jamaat-e-Islami’s Nazrul Islam, who got 73,773 votes.

Small parties swept in Bangladesh elections

This is a big thing for BJP, because it did not go anywhere in the elections. Most of the party’s candidates either lost or were eliminated. Just like in India, many small parties enter the field with ‘bicycle’, ‘elephant’, ‘sword’ or ‘tractor’ symbols, but they have no strength in front of big parties. Even in Bangladesh, BJP had big dreams, but the results came with only one seat. Whereas India’s BJP is completely different. In India, BJP has formed the government in many states along with the Centre. The name of BJP is definitely the same in both the countries, but the circumstances are completely different.

The accounts of Bangladesh Republican Party (BRR) with elephant symbol and Jatiya Party with bicycle symbol could not be opened either. In India, the election symbol of Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) is elephant, while the symbol of Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party is the bicycle. Similarly, the hand symbolized Bangladesh Muslim League (BML) and the lantern party of the same name also remained clean. In India, hand is the election symbol of Congress, while lantern is the symbol of Lalu Yadav’s RJD.

Vote bank division or pressure from big parties

According to the Election Commission, the results of a total of 297 seats have been declared. BNP won 209, Jamaat-e-Islami 68, National Citizen Party (NCP) 6, Independents 7 and other small parties like Khilafat Majlis (2), Islami Andolan (1), Gano Odhikar Parishad (1), Gano Sanghati Andolan (1) won one or two seats each. But looking at the condition of BJP, it seems that if small parties do not join a big alliance then it is certain that they will be wiped out. Many parties in India too are in a similar situation. The symbol looks good and the candidates look strong, but victory becomes difficult due to division of vote banks or pressure from big parties.

Tariq Rehman can form government by 16th February

Tariq Rehman’s BNP has made preparations to form the government by winning more than two-thirds of the seats. A new government can be formed by 16 February. This election has brought a big change in the politics of Bangladesh, where old parties were voted out and new forces emerged. But there is a lesson for small parties like BJP. Without a strong alliance or local support, even ‘Haathi’ would not have been able to reach anywhere in the elections. In the coming days, the formation of Tariq Rahman’s government will have an impact on Bangladesh-India relations and regional politics.

The election results of Bangladesh have decided that Tariq Rahman, son of former Prime Minister of Bangladesh Khaleda Zia and head of Bangladesh Nationalist Party, will now be the new Prime Minister of Bangladesh. But the question is what will be the change in the relations between Bangladesh and India if Tariq Rahman becomes the Prime Minister. After all, after becoming the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, will Tariq Rahman be closer to Chinese President Xi Jinping or will he make Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi his friend. The biggest question is whether after becoming the Prime Minister, Tariq Rahman will be successful in stopping the attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh or not.

People of Bangladesh trust Tariq

In the election results of Bangladesh which came on 13 February 2026, the people have elected Tariq Rahman as their new Prime Minister. As soon as the name was decided, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on behalf of India congratulated him on his victory and wrote on Twitter, ‘This victory shows that the people of Bangladesh have faith in your leadership. India will stand in support of a democratic, progressive and inclusive Bangladesh. I look forward to working with you to strengthen multi-faceted relations and advance shared development goals.

But the question is whether Tariq Rehman will also maintain equally warm relations with India as shown by India on the victory of Tariq Rehman. This question is also important because not only Tariq Rehman, but also the history of his late mother Khaleda Zia and her BNP has never been in favor of India. Many new and old examples of this also exist. As:

Tariq Rahman’s mother Khaleda Zia, in her very first election in 1991, had accused Sheikh Hasina that her party Awami League would bind Bangladesh in the chains of India.

Khaleda Zia used to oppose the 1972 treaty between India and Bangladesh and called it against the sovereignty of Bangladesh.

Khaleda Zia had opposed giving transit rights to India. Then he had said that allowing Indian trucks to run toll-free on the roads of Bangladesh is slavery to India.

While being the Prime Minister, Khaleda had given free rein to India’s banned organization ULFA for arms smuggling. This was revealed after the seizure of weapons from Chittagong in 2004, when about 10 trucks carrying Bangladeshi weapons were caught on the Indian border.

Apart from this, Khaleda Zia’s government never maintained good coordination with India. Tariq Rehman’s recent works are also more or less pointing in this direction. After spending 18 months in jail in 2007 and living in exile in London for 17 years, Tariq Rahman returned to Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh on 26 December 2025. A few days later, in January 2026, he paid a courtesy call on Chinese Ambassador Yao Wen and said that relations between Bangladesh and China are close and friendly.

Bangladesh supported One China Policy

Tariq Rahman had talked about supporting Bangladesh even on China’s weakest point and said that he is with the One China Policy. Tariq also talked about continuing the ongoing projects and defense agreements worth about $6 billion with China under the existing Belt and Road Initiative, which naturally revealed Tariq Rehman’s preference.

Now that Tariq Rahman is going to become the new Prime Minister of Bangladesh, it is doubtful whether he will be able to take Bangladesh forward by keeping a one-sided inclination towards China. Therefore, he is currently busy balancing his foreign policy and that is why he is trying to melt the ice in relations. Because he would not have forgotten that even though his mother Khaleda Zia never maintained relations with India, when Khaleda Zia passed away, Prime Minister Modi himself expressed grief over Khaleda Zia’s demise by posting on social media. India’s Foreign Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar reached Dhaka and met Tariq Rehman. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh also went to Bangladesh High Commission in Delhi and expressed grief over the demise of Khaleda Zia.

With whom will Tariq Rehman be close?

In such a situation, it would be a bit premature to decide whether Tariq Rehman will be closer to India or China. Because during the time of Mohammad Yunus, it will not be easy for Tariq Rahman to completely get rid of the agreements that Bangladesh had made with China by spoiling the relations with India and through which China had entered deep into Bangladesh. China is not only the biggest trading partner of Bangladesh, but China has also made huge investments in Bangladesh. So now let’s wait for the oath of Tariq Rehman. Let us wait for their decisions and then decide whether Tariq Rehman will be closer to India or China.

Parliamentary elections were held in Bangladesh on 12 February 2026, the first major national elections since the student-led movement toppled Sheikh Hasina’s government in 2024. This election took place after the ban of Awami League (Sheikh Hasina’s party) and was the first test of the return of democracy after the interim government of Muhammad Yunus. The main contest in the election was between the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and the Jamaat-e-Islami-led 11-party alliance (which included the National Citizen Party or NCP). This election was historic in the history of Bangladesh as new forces emerged for the first time after the GenZ movement, but the results show the return of old politics. The 15 year old supremacy of Jamaat has ended.

BNP’s great comeback and gaining majority

Tariq Rehman’s party returned to power after 20 years, the reason for which is Tariq Rehman. He was in exile in London for 17 years and returned to Dhaka in December 2025 after the death of his mother Khalda Zia. In the elections, BNP and its allies won 216 out of 299 seats. This is more than the two-thirds majority, which gives it the power to easily pass constitutional changes. Tariq Rehman won from Dhaka-17 and Bogra-6 seats and is now on his way to becoming the Prime Minister.

BNP focused on jobs, economic improvement, ending corruption and farmers and youth in the elections. The party exercised restraint after the victory, i.e. did not celebrate, but called for prayers in mosques, temples and churches. Many old Awami League voters moved to BNP because they wanted stability. This is BNP’s biggest demonstration since 2001.

Falling far short of Jamaat-e-Islami’s expectations
The radical Islamic party Jamaat-e-Islami tried to make a strong comeback in 2025 after getting the ban lifted by the Supreme Court. He was the leader of the 11-party alliance, which also included NCP. The party gave the slogan of including women and minorities, justice-based governance and ‘New Bangladesh by including all’. For the first time, a Hindu candidate was also fielded. But it was not good. Jamaat and its alliance won only 69-77 seats. This was well below the party’s expectations, although it would now become the main opposition party. Old allegations like role in the 1971 war, protests over women’s rights, violence related to student wing Chhatra Shibir and financial issues influenced voters. Youth, women and minorities mostly moved towards BNP. Jamaat chief Shafiqur Rehman accepted defeat but expressed some dissatisfaction over the process.

Big collapse and electoral failure of Student-Youth Bloc (NCP)

In 2024, a student-led movement ousted Sheikh Hasina from the throne. Hundreds of people died in this and the leader of this movement was called National Citizen Party (NCP). It formed an alliance with Jamaat in the elections. NCP’s leaders were youth like Naheed Islam, who promised new politics, reforms and corruption-free governance. But the results were reversed and NCP got only 5-6 seats. This was a big blow to the GenZ movement of 2024. Many major reasons for this emerged, such as lack of organization, inability to compete with the strong grassroots machinery of BNP and the migration of young voters towards BNP. NCP formed an alliance with Jamaat, but this alienated young and liberal voters.

Overall, what difference did it make to the elections and what will happen next?

This election shows the return of the old political party BNP in Bangladesh, while new forces like Chhatra Bloc and Jamaat have dashed the hopes of Jamaat. Voters have also said yes to constitutional reforms. There will be stability after the formation of BNP government, but Jamaat will remain in opposition. That means this change is taking Bangladesh on the new path of democracy.

In the parliamentary elections of Bangladesh, the public has finally awarded former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia’s party BNP with a resounding victory. Khaleda’s son Tariq Rahman will take oath as the Prime Minister of Bangladesh tomorrow i.e. on Saturday. This was the first election which was held without the Awami League. Bangladesh’s exiled writer Taslima Nasreen has reacted after the election results came out. On the defeat of Jamaat, he said that it was good that the Islamist Jihadi terrorist group lost in this election.

Taslima Nasreen wrote- I am not happy because BNP won…

Taslima Nasreen wrote, ‘I am happy in this election not because BNP won, but because the Islamist Jihadi terrorist organization lost. For the last one and a half years, he has shown a kind of dominance in the country’s politics, holding rallies with lakhs of supporters and indulging in violence day and night whenever he wants. They killed whoever they wanted, tortured them, set fire to the houses of Hindus, beat and burnt Hindus to death. Not a single woman was fielded as a candidate for votes.

He said, ‘The party which hates women so much insulted working women by calling them prostitutes. Spoke against women’s leadership. Women were pushed into the darkness of burqa and niqab. Women were considered slaves and sex slaves of men. Dreamed of implementing Sharia law against women. The public did not allow Jamaat-e-Islami to come to power. This is good news for now.

In this election, I am not happy because the BNP won, but because the Islamists–jihadi–terrorist group was defeated. Over the past year and a half, they displayed outrageous dominance, held rallies with hundreds of thousands of supporters, carried out mob violence day and night…

— taslima nasreen (@taslimanasreen) February 13, 2026

Taslima gave these suggestions to Tariq Rehman

Apart from this, he has given some suggestions to BNP party regarding bringing changes in the country. He appealed and wrote that the charter of July 1 should be cancelled. Liberalism should be promoted again in the Constitution. Official religion will have to be removed. Family laws based on religion will have to be abolished. To provide equality to women, a Uniform Civil Code should be implemented. Apart from this, he said that freedom of speech, human rights, protection of minority religions (Hindu, Buddhist, Christian, indigenous people) and safety of women will have to be ensured.

He said that madrassa based education will have to be ended. A secular and science-based education system will have to be strengthened. Universal education and healthcare for all must be strengthened.

Taslima said, ‘Respecting democracy, the ban on Awami League will have to be lifted. Such arrangements will have to be made so that its leaders can return from exile. Can join politics. It is not safe to keep the jihadi-backed Jamaat-e-Islami as the main opposition party.

He said that along with economic development, the gap between rich and poor will have to be reduced. Family and religious politics should not be encouraged. Also, during Sheikh Hasina’s government, bloggers were killed, due to which free-thinking people, who were afraid, took refuge abroad to save their lives. Such arrangements should be made for them, so that they can return home. Can work safely.

Liberation War statues should be rebuilt: Nasreen

Taslima Nasreen said that freedom of speech and freedom of the press should not be violated. All books, theater productions and films that are banned should be released. The statues commemorating the Liberation War should be rebuilt. The houses of Dhanmondi 32 should also be rebuilt. Hijab, burqa etc. should not be made mandatory for women in any government or private institutions. Burqa and niqab should be banned due to security reasons.

Apart from this he said that Jihadi terrorists should be arrested again. Hostile relations with India should end. Chinmoy Krishna Das should be released.

Tariq Rahman’s BNP has got a bumper victory in the general elections of Bangladesh. BNP is now going to form the government in Bangladesh and Tariq Rahman will be the next Prime Minister of Bangladesh, but the Jamaat-e-Islami alliance led by Shafiqur Rahman is left far behind.

Jamaat-e-Islami has lost the elections in Bangladesh. Jamaat alliance seems to be getting around 70 seats. Somewhere behind the crushing defeat of Jamaat-e-Islami, which is considered close to Pakistan, its fanatic thinking is responsible. Jamaat-e-Islami is the same political party of Bangladesh, which opposed the independence of Bangladesh from Pakistan in 1971.

Jamaat-e-Islami is a supporter of Pakistan
Jamaat-e-Islami is the same party which Sheikh Hasina has banned several times on the charges of spreading fundamentalism. Now you must be wondering how the Jamaat finally lost in Bangladesh with 90% Muslim population? That too when Islamic rule has been the main election agenda of the Jamaat. The defeat of Jamaat in the election results of Bangladesh makes it clear that the people of Bangladesh have rejected the pro-Pakistan thinking. The people of Bangladesh once again did not want to allow Pakistan’s influence to be established in the country, hence Jamaat was defeated in the elections.

Bangladeshi people want to see India closer

Bangladeshi people always want to see India closer to them and not Pakistan. That is why the public did not allow the pro-Pakistan group to reach power. The people of Bangladesh also know that Jamaat always pushes the agenda of Pakistan. It can be said that the election results of Bangladesh have also given a crushing defeat to the hidden agenda of Pakistan. Both Bangladeshi youth and women seemed scared of the rules and regulations of the Jamaat. There was a fear in his mind that if Jamaat was successful in forming the government in Bangladesh, then Islamic laws would be implemented here.

Some women told that they fear that if the Jamaat had come, there would have been many restrictions on their freedom. The youth were worried that Jamaat could affect their development and further increase radicalization in the country. That is why a large number of youth and women voted for Bangladesh Nationalist Party against Jamaat.

Who did Hindu voters vote for?
Bangladesh’s minority i.e. Hindu voters voted for BNP in large numbers and rejected Jamaat. Many leaders of the Jamaat were seen raising questions on the worship method of Hindus. In such a situation, a strange fear regarding the Jamaat was visible among the Hindu voters. This is the reason why Hindu voters united and expressed confidence in Tariq Rehman. The Hindu population in Bangladesh is about 9 percent.

In the absence of Awami League, Sheikh Hasina’s supporters also voted for BNP, because Sheikh Hasina’s party was not in the electoral fray. Awami League supporters did not want to let Jamaat-e-Islami win the elections at any cost. It can be said that more people have voted against Jamaat for BNP out of circumstance than in support of BNP. A big supporter of Awami League, on the condition of anonymity, said that if BNP forms the government, future avenues will be open for Awami League, whereas this is not at all possible with Jamaat, because Jamaat is pro-Pakistan.

Hindu candidate of BNP won
Many big leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami lost their elections in the general elections of Bangladesh. Mian Ghulam Parwar, considered the second in command of Jamaat-e-Islami, also could not save his seat. Mian Ghulam Parwar lost the election from Khulna 5 parliamentary seat to Ali Lobi of BNP. From Dhaka 3, BNP’s Hindu candidate Goyeshwar Chandra Roy defeated Jamaat-e-Islami alliance’s Shaheenur Islam. Not only this, Jamaat’s Hindu candidate Krishna Nandi from Khulna 1 parliamentary seat also lost the election to BNP’s Muslim candidate. There are a good number of Hindu voters on this seat. The message of the defeat of Jamaat’s Hindu candidate in Khulna 1 is that the Hindu voters of Bangladesh cannot vote for Jamaat.

Due to the alliance with Jamaat, NCP, the party that emerged from the student movement among the people of Bangladesh, was also sidelined. Even though NCP President Nahid Islam won his election, many big faces of this party lost their elections. NCP’s Sarjis Islam also lost the election from Panchagarh 1 parliamentary seat. The people of Bangladesh have shown the mirror to the Jamaat that the politics of fanaticism and love for Pakistan is not acceptable in the country. Jamaat’s defeat is good news for India.
