On Friday (September 26, 2025) outside the United Nations headquarters in New York, USA, a large number of people from Bangladeshi Pravasi community gathered and staged a strong protest against Bangladesh’s interim chief advisor Mohammad Yunus. The protesters say that atrocities on religious minorities have increased in Bangladesh since Yunus took power. He raised slogans till Pakistan, which was clearly showing the anger of the migrant community.

The protesters alleged that the situation has worsened since the removal of Sheikh Hasina government on 5 August 2024. The attacks on minority communities, especially Hindus, Buddhists and Christians have intensified. Many people had to leave the country due to violence. A protestor said, “Yunus is pushing Bangladesh towards extremism, the situation is as if Taliban rule.”

Voice of victims and demands

The protesters alleged that Hindu priest Chinmay Krishna Das has been illegally jailed by the Yunus government. Minorities are constantly being murdered and harassed. Yunus captured power by removing the democratically elected Hasina government. They demand that they should leave the post of Yunus and conduct independent elections and the arrested religious leaders should be released immediately.

The protesters reminded that Sheikh Hasina’s government was illegally removed on 5 August 2024. He says that Bangladesh was handed over to Islamic forces and terrorist organizations by demolishing a democratic government.

In his address to the United Nations, Mohammad Yunus said, “Bangladesh had recently seen public rebellion and we are now on a journey of change.” He emphasized the important role of Bangladeshi migrant workers. Younus appealed to the host countries to give sympathy and security to the migrants.

According to media reports, when the local people caught and beaten the accused, he was taken to the hospital instead of handing over to the police, from where he escaped. Furious performance of students
Students of Dhaka University reacted the most intense response. Jagannath Hall, which is mainly a hostel of minority students, took out a march demanding justice. The platform called “Students Against Discrimination” organized this protest and demanded direct action from the government. Increasing cases of violence against minorities have shocked not only the students but the whole society. In March, the echo of slogans like ‘Justice Do or Quit Power’ was heard.

Judiciary and political response
The Bangladesh High Court ordered the officials to remove the viral video from all social media platforms and provide immediate security and treatment to the victim. BNP general secretary Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir demanded strict action against the culprits, while Sajib Vajd, son of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, convicted the Yunus administration of increased violence in the last 11 months.

Hasina government collapse and effect on minorities
In August 2024, Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League government had to resign due to the students’ movement. After this, Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus took over the reins of the interim government, but since then incidents of violence against minorities in Bangladesh have increased.
