Amidst the current political situation in Bangladesh, the announcement of elections is considered very important for the entire South Asia. Even before the 13th general elections to be held on February 12, there are clear indications that the country’s politics is moving towards a major change. Amidst the cold and dense fog, the political temperature of Bangladesh is continuously increasing and Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) seems to be getting the maximum benefit from it.

Recently, a big opinion poll conducted by Eminence Associates for Social Development has revealed surprising results. In this survey, opinions of more than 20 thousand voters from all 300 parliamentary constituencies of the country were taken. According to the survey, about 70 percent people are in the mood to vote in favor of BNP, which is considered a big lead for the party. In comparison, Jamaat-e-Islami has got 19 percent support.

Relief news for Tariq Rehman

This opinion poll is no less than a big good news for BNP acting leader Tariq Rehman. The party is now preparing to formally make him the national president soon. BNP General Secretary Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, while talking to the media in Sylhet, has indicated that this decision can be taken in a day or two.

Election campaign can start from Sylhet

According to party sources, Tariq Rehman may start his election campaign from Sylhet. This is the same area from where late leader Khaleda Zia used to start her election campaigns. BNP is considering this step as very important emotionally and politically and is linking it to the heritage of the party.

Party formed from student movement did not get support

Another important thing has emerged in the results of the survey. The National Citizens Party (NCP), which emerged from the student movement against the Sheikh Hasina government in August last year, has received only 2.6 percent support. This makes it clear that the strength seen on the streets does not necessarily translate into electoral support.

Big dent in Awami League’s vote bank

The most surprising aspect of the opinion poll is that about 60 percent of the old supporters of Awami League now want to vote for BNP, while more than 20 percent of the voters seem to be leaning towards Jamaat-e-Islami.

Khaleda Zia died in hospital

According to the information given by Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Khaleda Zia died at around 6 am on Tuesday morning. He breathed his last at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka, where he was undergoing treatment for more than a month. The party’s statement said that he died immediately after Fajr prayers.
He further said, ‘As the first woman Prime Minister of Bangladesh, her important contribution in the development of the country and strengthening India-Bangladesh relations will always be remembered. I remember my meeting with him in Dhaka in 2015. We hope that his vision and legacy will continue to guide our mutual cooperation. May God grant peace to his soul.

Bangladesh’s first woman Prime Minister and Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) President Khaleda Zia died on Tuesday (December 30) during treatment at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka. A BNP post said, ‘Khalida Zia passed away at around 6 am, just after Fajr prayers. We request everyone to pray for her.’

BNP President Khaleda Zia was suffering from many problems like liver cirrhosis, arthritis, diabetes, chest and heart. He was admitted to the hospital on November 23 and was undergoing treatment for the last 36 days, but last night his condition worsened significantly.

Khaleda Zia was the first woman PM of Bangladesh
For the first time in the year 1991, Khaleda Zia became the first woman Prime Minister of Bangladesh. Her husband Ziaur Rahman was the former President of Bangladesh. Khaleda Zia’s first term was from 1991 to 1996 and for the second time she was the Prime Minister from 2001 to 2006. Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) was founded by Zia’s husband and former President Ziaur Rahman in 1978.

Took over politics after husband’s murder
In the year 1981, Zia’s husband Rehman was murdered and after this Khaleda Zia became active in politics. In 1982, a military coup was carried out under the leadership of former army chief Lieutenant General Hussain Muhammad Ershad. In 1984, Zia became the president of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). Let us tell you that Zia has the title of becoming the first woman Prime Minister of Bangladesh and the second woman Prime Minister of Muslim countries after Benazir Bhutto.

Had political rivalry with Sheikh Hasina
The political rivalry between Khaleda Zia and Sheikh Hasina was known as the Battle of the Begums in Bangladesh, which influenced politics there for decades. BNP was the main opposition party in Bangladesh during the era of Sheikh Hasina. BNP had boycotted the 2024 general elections. Let us tell you that at present Khaleda Zia’s BNP is the largest party in Bangladesh. Zia’s son Tariq Rahman is being said to be the future Prime Minister of Bangladesh.

Was famous as Deshnetri
Khaleda Zia was born in 1945 in Jalpaiguri in Dinajpur district of Bengal Presidency. His father Iskander Ali Majumdar was a tea businessman and mother was Taiba Majumdar. Jiya was the third among 5 siblings. The life of Begum Khaleda Zia has been a long story of struggle between victory, defeat, jail and illness. For her supporters, Zia was a patriot.

While on one hand the uncontrolled violence of radical Islamic groups is moving towards anarchy in Bangladesh, meanwhile a big political development is coming to the fore before the elections to be held in the month of February next year. In fact, one of the most important personalities of the current politics of Bangladesh is going to return to the country after 17 years and that personality, Tariq Rahman, son and political heir of former Prime Minister of Bangladesh Khaleda Zia and working president of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), will return to Bangladesh on Thursday (December 25, 2025).

Tariq Rahman’s return to Bangladesh is coming at a time when the country is at a turning point. In fact, BNP is still considered to be at the forefront in the general elections to be held in the month of February 2026 next year and in such a situation, it may be in a position to give direction to the country. Apart from this, the chances of BNP’s victory without any major upset in the country are considered strong.

Rahman raised questions on Yunus’s foreign policy decisions

Looking at the current situation of the country, while many people consider the head of the interim government of Bangladesh, Mohammad Yunus, to be careless especially on the foreign policy front, Tariq Rahman has clearly put forward the possible foreign policy of BNP. In May this year, BNP Chief Tariq Rehman, while emphasizing the need for elections and reforms, had questioned Yunus’s mandate on the basis of which he is taking decisions related to the country’s long-term foreign policy.

Tariq Rahman spoke on the first policy of Bangladesh

BNP Chief Tariq Rehman made it clear that Bangladesh will neither increase its closeness with Rawalpindi nor Delhi excessively, but will give priority to Bangladesh first. During a massive rally in Dhaka’s Nayapaltan area, Rehman had said ‘No Delhi, No Pindi, Bangladesh first’ and appealed to his supporters to repeat this slogan.

The International Criminal Court (ICT) in Bangladesh on Monday (November 17, 2025) sentenced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to death. After this decision of ICT, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has made allegations targeting India regarding Sheikh Hasina.

BNP leader accuses India of Sheikh Hasina

BNP leader Ruhul Kabir Rizvi alleged that India is creating an opportunity for subversion and tension in Bangladesh by giving shelter to ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. He said, ‘India has given shelter to a fugitive criminal from Bangladesh, along with this the country is giving her (Sheikh Hasina) an opportunity to carry out sabotage against Bangladesh and this is not legal behavior on the part of India. This is very unfortunate.

BNP leader Ruhul Rizvi made this comment while answering a question at a press conference held in Nayapaltan on Monday (November 17, 2025).

India gave shelter to illegal person- BNP leader

The BNP leader said that in a country like India, where democracy rules and an independent judiciary is established, Sheikh Hasina should not get any kind of leeway to indulge in any wrong activity. He said, ‘Giving shelter to an illegal person and allowing him to freely cause havoc within Bangladesh can never be accepted.’

Rizvi has alleged that the person being prosecuted under the laws of Bangladesh is issuing instructions independently from India and those instructions have no legal basis. He said that Sheikh Hasina is asking people in Bangladesh to burn and destroy properties and such orders are clearly illegal. If India calls itself a democratic country then how can it allow this to happen?

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Friday (August 8, 2025) made a serious accusation of the radical Islamic party Jamaat-e-Islami of trying to eradicate the memories of the country’s 1971 liberation struggle. According to local media reports, BNP also said that Jamaat is using the PR system to delay the upcoming general elections.

In a discussion on the ‘anniversary of the public the anniversary, fundamental reform and national parliamentary elections’ held at the National Press Club in Dhaka, Major (retired) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, a member of the BNP’s Standing Committee, said, “The people of the country do not understand the PR system. Therefore, it is necessary that national elections should be held under the current system.” He also said that people are surprised to hear the statements given by Jamaat.

What did BNP leader Hafizuddin say?
Expressing concern about the upcoming national elections, Hafizuddin said, “It is difficult to conduct peaceful elections with this police system, which has not improved in the last one year.” Last week too, he regretted that a political party, which opposed the liberation struggle of Bangladesh, is now trying to claim that the country made a mistake in 1971.

He said in a sharp tone, “In any country of the world, non-elected people do not change the constitution, who made a constitution with their blood in 1972, how can they hear about changing it today? This party says that Bangladesh was a wandering country and he made a mistake in 1971.” Although he did not name the party, it was clearly pointed to Jamaat-e-Islami.

‘Jamaat should apologize for his role in 1971’
Earlier this year, Hafizuddin expressed disappointment over the attitude of the Jamaat. He had said that Jamaat tried to justify him instead of publicly apologizing for his role in 1971. During the 1971 liberation struggle, Jamaat supported Pakistan and many of its leaders were accused of being involved in war crimes.

After coming to power last year, the interim government led by Mohammad Yunus lifted the ban on Jamaat and its student unit Islamic student Shibir through a gazette. Also, in June, the Supreme Court of Bangladesh restored the registration of Jamaat, which gave it a way to participate in the upcoming general elections.
