Nearly three months after the formation of the government, Dipen Dewan Chakma has resigned from the post of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs Minister. Deepen’s supporters claim that he resigned after just three months in office due to pressure and not due to health reasons. According to Bangladeshi media The Daily Star, in his resignation letter to Prime Minister Tariq Rahman, Dipen said that he was facing many health-related problems, due to which he was facing difficulties in doing his work. In his resignation letter, Dipen wrote that it was necessary to step down from the post to help the government develop and maintain the pace of government work.

Resigned from job in 2005

The letter said, due to my physical illness, I am facing many difficulties in fulfilling the responsibilities assigned to me. About three and a half months ago, Deepen Diwan had assumed the responsibility of this post. Diwan was earlier a senior joint district judge and had resigned from government service in 2005. After this he joined Bangladesh Nationalist Party.

Diwan’s father was Ziaur Rahman’s advisor

According to Bangladeshi media, his father Subimal Dewan was an advisor to BNP founder and former president Ziaur Rahman. Subimal was also the founding general secretary of Rangamati district BNP. In 2010, Dewan was elected President of BNP in Rangamati. In 2016, he was made the Central Assistant Religious Affairs Secretary of the party. However, Diwan is still handling the responsibility of this post. He contested the elections for the first time on 12 February, in which he defeated UPDF-backed independent candidate Pahal Chakma by 169,066 votes. On 17 February, after the BNP won the elections by a landslide and formed the government under the leadership of Tariq Rahman, Dewan was given the responsibility of the Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs.

Debate in Bangladesh on Diwan’s resignation

According to Bangladeshi media Prothom Alo, leaders and workers involved in BNP politics, as well as people from the Pahari community, are trying to understand why Dipen Dewan took such a decision. Discussion has started regarding the real reason behind Deepen’s resignation. His supporters blocked the road in Rangamati and demanded withdrawal of his resignation and reinstatement. The protesters claim that Deepen Dewan was forced to resign due to pressure. Local BNP leaders said that they were not aware of Deepen Diwan’s resignation. They believe that he may have resigned because of issues related to running the ministry, controlling Rangamati politics and the process of making government appointments to the District Council in the Chittagong Hill Tracts. The activities of the Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs are focused on three hill districts. There are three parliamentary seats there. In the national elections, BNP candidates won all three seats – Rangamati, Khagrachhari and Bandarban.

Taking aim at the Jamaat chief, he wrote, ‘The President had suppressed many things related to the date of August 5, 2024. In his recent statement, he did not even accept what he had said to the leaders present that day after the resignation of the absconding Prime Minister and what he told to the nation later. That day he did not say anything that he is saying now.

Shahabuddin had addressed the nation on August 5 after Sheikh Hasina’s departure, in which he said that he had accepted the resignation of Prime Minister Hasina, but two months later he said that he had only heard that the resignation had been given but he had no proof of it.

President had targeted Yunus administration

There has been a tussle between the new government formed in Bangladesh under the leadership of Tariq Rahman and the interim government of Mohammad Yunus. President Shahabuddin has made many serious allegations against Mohammad Yunus. He said that Yunus had made a secret deal between Bangladesh and America. Shahabuddin said, ‘He should have been informed about any agreement made with America, but Yunus did not do so.’

He thanked the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and said that during the protests he could remain on the post of President only because the top leaders of BNP and the armed forces supported him. Shahabuddin further said, ‘The top leader of BNP had assured him that he was in no way in favor of removing the President in an unconstitutional manner.’

It also remains to be seen whether opponents and critics will also be included in this. BNP’s main rival Awami League has been kept out of the 2026 elections, while its leader and former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has taken refuge in India.

Tariq Rehman, who himself has experienced exile, once again repeated allegations of repression and political isolation against the Sheikh Hasina government, but in his speech he did not comment explicitly on the future of his political rival or the ongoing death penalty case against him. He definitely said that the people of Bangladesh want to get back their freedom of speech and democratic rights. Some analysts are linking this to the ban on Awami League leaders from contesting elections.

Tariq Rehman did not say anything on the killings of Hindus

Tariq Rehman talked about an inclusive society that takes people of all religions and faiths together, but he did not directly condemn the recent incidents of violence, arson and killings, nor did he express extended condolences to the victims. He paid tribute to Osman Hadi and stressed the need to regain economic rights. Linking economic justice to the problems of common citizens, Rehman cited the struggles of 1971 and 2024 to show continuity between past sacrifices and present demands.

Through his speech, Tariq Rehman tried to present the BNP as a major alternative political force ahead of the February elections, especially at a time when many people in the country are feeling marginalised.
