The Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council (BHBCUC) on Thursday (August 28, 2025) expressed disappointment over the non -representation of minority communities among the newly appointed judges in the country. It said that 25 judges have been appointed as Additional Judges in the High Court Division of the Supreme Court in Bangladesh. These include 9 judicial officers, 9 lawyers and seven law officers.

A statement issued by BHBCUC said, “The complete absence of individuals of religious and ethnic minority communities is extremely regrettable in these appointments. This is particularly worrying, because if the minority is about 10 percent of the population of the country, not a single person from these communities is included in these 25 newly appointed judges.

New appointments of President of Bangladesh

On behalf of the council, Chairman Nim Chandra Bhowmik, Executive Chairman Ushatan Talukdar, Senior Vice President Nirmal Rojario and Acting General Secretary Monindra Kumar Nath expressed serious concern and resentment on the matter. Local media said that Bangladesh President Mohammad Shahabuddin made new appointments late on Monday night in consultation with Chief Justice Syed Refat Ahmed, which increased the number of High Court judges to 113.

On Tuesday, the Chief Justice administered the oath to 25 newly appointed judges. Among the appointed judges, the father -in -law of the National Citizen Party (North) Sarjis Alam, Deputy Attorney General Lutfur Rahman has been appointed as Additional Judge of the High Court.

Victims arbitrarily detained

According to the report of Bangladesh chief Bengali daily Prothom Aloe, Supreme Court lawyer Rahman was promoted to the post of Deputy Attorney General after demonstrations in July last year. Last month, the Awami League party of Bangladesh strongly condemned the ‘handicap and’ state sponsored harassment ‘by the court under the interim government led by Mohammad Yunus in the country.

The party said, ‘The judges are now directed by the Yunus -backed mob inside the court. The government sponsored attacks on lawyers wishing to provide legal services to deny the legal rights of the victims arbitrarily, which is ending the fairness and transparency of the judiciary.

Judiciary is now under mobocracy

He said, ‘The state-propelled repression for the attackers and freedom from punishment. This clearly shows that the judiciary has become under the mobilization. Since the democratically elected government -elected government led by Sheikh Hasina, many judges and lawyers serving during their tenure have been arrested on concocted grounds. Experts believe that these latest appointments are a political move to carry forward the agenda of the interim government led by Mohammad Yunus.

Bangladesh’s International Crime Tribunal (ICT) on Tuesday (August 12, 2025) dismissed the petition to allow senior advocate ZI Khan Panna of the Supreme Court to represent former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The matter is related to anti -humanity crimes associated with the protests that started in July last year.

Analysts believe that this decision is injustice to the judicial process and has violated Hasina’s right to rescue. Advocate Najnin Nahar filed this application on behalf of Panna.

According to local media, while hearing the petition in the testimony, the Tribunal said that it cannot be accepted. ICT remarked, “The train has already left the station, it is not possible to ride in it by informing the station master. There is no opportunity to appoint a new lawyer in this phase of the case.” The tribunal said that the Supreme Court lawyer Amir Hussain has already been appointed by the state to advocate Hasina.,

In which case the case on Sheikh Hasina is going on?

Significantly, on August 3, the prosecution started its action against Hasina and two others in the case of anti -human crime in ICT. The co-accused include former Home Minister Asdujman Khan Kamal and former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chaudhary Abdullah Al Mamoon. After the proceedings, Awami League termed the allegations leveled against his leadership as politically motivated and called it a conspiracy of the illegal interim government led by Mohammad Yunus.

The leader of the Awami League told the Yunus government

Awami League leader Mohammad A. Arafat said, “Neither former Prime Minister Hasina nor he has received a formal information about the case, which reflects the absurd action of this non-elected government. It is part of the conspiracy of a non-elected occupiers, which is desperate to end democratic legitimacy, silence the opposition and remain in power. Such a government has no legal and no moral rights that it has been prosecuted for the public. Parliament has the right to amend the law passed by Parliament. ”

He said that any democratically elected leader should not be prosecuted to perform constitutional duties while facing violent rebellion.
