Bangladesh women’s cricket team captain Nigar Sultana was accused of physically exploiting the junior players of the team. He has rejected all these allegations, but at the same time he has also taken a dig at Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur by name. The controversy started when former fast bowler Jahanara Alam said that several junior players came to her and told her that Nigar Sultana had beaten and misbehaved with them. Jahanara Alam is now living in Australia.

But captain Nigar Sultana rejected all such allegations and asked why these complaints were coming against a player who was out of the team for a long time.

In a media interview, Nigar Sultana described the allegations against her as baseless and mentioned the controversial behavior of Harmanpreet Kaur during the Indian team’s 2023 Bangladesh tour. In fact, at that time, after an LBW decision, the Indian captain had hit the stumps in frustration. In the post match presentation, questions were raised on the umpire’s decision.

Nigar Sultana defended herself and said, “Why would I assault anyone? Why would I hit the stumps with my bat? Am I Harmanpreet Kaur, that I keep hitting the stumps like this? Why would I do that? If I am cooking or doing any other work in my personal life, why should I not hit my own helmet with the bat, it will be my own matter.”

Nigar Sultana further said that why would she physically assault others? He said that things do not become true just because someone says them. Sultana also says that ask other players whether something like this has happened or not.

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) will form a committee to investigate the allegations made by former women’s team captain Jahanara Alam. Along with this, the Board has directed the committee to submit its findings and recommendations within 15 working days. Jahanara has made serious allegations of sexual harassment against former chief selector and team manager Manjrul Islam.

A statement issued by the BCB said, “The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has expressed concern over the allegations made by a former member of the Bangladesh national women’s cricket team regarding alleged misconduct by some individuals associated with the team. This matter is sensitive, therefore the BCB has decided to constitute a committee to investigate the allegations. This committee will submit its findings and recommendations within 15 working days.”

“The BCB is committed to ensuring a safe, respectful and professional environment for all of its players and staff. The Board takes such matters extremely seriously and will take appropriate action based on the findings of the investigation,” the statement said.

Jahanara has told in an interview given to journalist Riyasad Azim that team manager Manjrul Islam had behaved inappropriately with him. He would put his hand on her shoulder without permission and talk about such personal things which would make her feel uncomfortable. Former selectors and managers used to come to him to hug him instead of shaking hands. This happened despite the presence of his teammates and other officials.

According to Jahanara, he had complained about this to former BCB director Shafiul Islam Nadel and board chief executive officer Nizamuddin Chaudhary.

Jahanara Alam, the only Bangladeshi player to participate in tournaments like Women’s T20 Challenge and Fairbreak Invitational T20 in India, has taken 48 wickets for Bangladesh in 52 ODI matches at an average of 30.39, while in 83 T20 matches, she has taken 60 wickets at an average of 24.03.
