An earthquake of 4.1 magnitude was felt in Bangladesh on Thursday (4 December 2025) in the morning. Its effect was seen in the capital Dhaka and neighboring districts. The mild earthquake felt at around 6.14 in the morning forced people to come out of their homes, but the matter of relief was that no damage was reported from anywhere. According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre, its epicenter was about 30 kilometers away in Narsingdi district. Due to light depth, the tremors were not strong, hence no major problems were seen.

The moment tremors were felt in the city and surrounding districts, people got scared for a few moments. Dhaka administration said that neither there has been any crack in any building nor any case of injury to any person has come to light. People have definitely become alert due to continuous seismic activities in the last few days, but this time the situation remained completely under control."text-align: justify;">Dhaka resides in a high-risk area

Geology experts say that Bangladesh is located at the confluence of three major tectonic plates. This is the reason why this area is always in danger of earthquake. Dhaka is counted among those cities of the world where earthquake risk remains at a high level. The dilapidated buildings present in old neighborhoods make this danger more serious, because even light tremors can cause damage to them.

The earthquake that occurred a month ago took 10 lives

People’s concern has also increased because the 5.7 magnitude earthquake that occurred exactly a month ago had shaken many areas of Bangladesh. In that incident, 10 people lost their lives and there were cracks in the walls of many houses. A lot of damage was seen in the area between Dhaka and Narsingdi at that time.

The news is being updated…

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday (November 1) expressed deep concern over the health of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Khaleda Zia and said that India is ready to provide her all possible assistance. This comment of PM Modi comes after the alleged statement of Khaleda Zia’s party leaders, in which it has been said that she is very unwell and the former Prime Minister of Bangladesh has been put on ventilation.

PM Modi posted on Twitter, “I am deeply concerned to know about the health of Begum Khaleda Zia, who has contributed to the public life of Bangladesh for many years. We wish her a speedy recovery. India is ready to provide all possible assistance.”

What did BNP tell?

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairperson Khaleda Zia, 80, was admitted to a private hospital on November 23 after she developed a chest infection that affected both her heart and lungs. Four days later, Khaleda Zia was shifted to the coronary care unit due to multiple health complications.

A local news portal quoted BNP vice-president Advocate Ahmed Azam Khan as saying that Jiah’s condition has deteriorated and she has been put on ventilation. “His condition is very serious. Nothing can be done except prayers from the entire country,” he told the media outside Evercare Hospital in Dhaka.

‘Jiya’s condition critical’
According to news agency PTI, BNP General Secretary Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir also confirmed that Zia’s condition remains critical and her treatment is ongoing. Local and international medical experts are taking care of his health. TBSnews.net quoted Alamgir as saying, “He is very unwell. The whole country is wishing for his recovery. Local and foreign experts are engaged in his treatment. They are trying their best.”

A Bangladesh court on Monday sentenced ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to five years in jail and her niece and British MP Tulip Siddiq to two years in jail in a land scam case. According to the news of state-run BSS news agency, Judge Mohammad Rabiul Alam of Dhaka Special Judge’s Court-4 also sentenced Hasina’s sister Sheikh Rehana to seven years in jail in the same case. A case was registered against 17 people in this corruption case.

The court pronounced this verdict in a packed courtroom in the absence of the three accused. Each of the remaining 14 accused was jailed for five years. The court also imposed a fine of Tk 1 lakh each on all the 17 convicts, including Haseena, Rehana and Siddiq, and in default of payment of the fine, they will have to undergo additional jail term of six months.

She is the daughter of Britain’s Bangladeshi Labor Party leader Siddiq Rehana and has been MP from Hampstead and Highgate since 2015. In April, the interim government had issued an arrest warrant for 43-year-old Siddiq as part of its investigation into corruption during Hasina’s tenure as prime minister.

He was found guilty of influencing his aunt Haseena to acquire land on the outskirts of Dhaka in the name of his mother, brother and sister. However, he has vehemently denied these allegations. According to the news of ‘The Daily Star’ newspaper, this is the fourth decision related to 78-year-old Hasina in the cases filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

On January 13, ACC had registered a case of land scam against 15 people including Hasina, Rehana and Siddiq. These people were accused of illegally obtaining the allotment of the plot during the tenure of the former Prime Minister. The investigating officer later filed a charge sheet against 17 accused on March 10.

The ACC had filed six separate cases at its Dhaka Unified District Office-1 between January 12 and 14 over alleged irregularities in the allotment of land under the ‘Purbachal New Town’ project, ‘The Dhaka Tribune’ newspaper reported.

According to the ACC, Hasina, in collusion with Rajuk officials, illegally acquired six plots of land, each measuring 10 katha (7,200 sq ft) in size, for herself and several relatives, including her son Sajeeb Wajid Joy and daughter Saima Wajid Putul, even though they were not eligible under existing rules.

ACC officials said Siddiq used his position to get plots in the names of Rehana, Bobby and Azmeena. Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK) is the government agency responsible for monitoring the regulations from planning to construction of government buildings in Bangladesh.

In this case, on July 31, charges were framed against 29 people, including Haseena, Rehana, Joy, Putul and Tulip. Hasina was sentenced on November 27 to 21 years of rigorous imprisonment, which includes seven years in each of the three cases filed in the Purbachal land scam case. Joy and Putul were co-accused in separate cases and were sentenced to five years in each case.

According to a report by ‘BBC’ (British Broadcasting Corporation), Siddiq lives in London and has rejected the allegations against him. Britain has no extradition treaty with Bangladesh. It is classified as a ‘2B’ country, which means that clear evidence must be presented to lawyers and judges to approve any extradition.

Hasina has been living in India since the massive protests in Bangladesh on August 5 last year. Due to the protests, he had to leave power and his Awami League government fell. He was declared a fugitive by a court.

Hasina was sentenced to death in absentia by a special tribunal last month on charges of “crimes against humanity” over her government’s brutal crackdown on student protests last year. The ousted Prime Minister says the allegations against him are “full of bias and politically motivated”.

Self-exiled acting president of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Tariq Rahman on Saturday said that returning home is not completely under his control. That too at a time when his mother and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia is suffering from a very serious illness.

Former Prime Minister was admitted on 23 November

BNP leader Zia (80) was admitted to a private hospital on November 23 after suffering from a chest infection. Both his heart and lungs were affected due to the infection. Sharing a post on social media from London on Saturday, Rahman (60) said that like any child, he wants to be with his mother in this moment of crisis. Rahman has been living in Britain since 2008.

He wrote, ‘But unlike others, taking a unilateral decision in this regard is neither in my hands nor completely under my control. The sensitivity of this matter also limits the scope for detailed explanation.

Rehman said his family hopes that ‘once the current political realities reach the desired level, my long and anxious wait to return to my homeland will finally end.’

However, it was not made clear in his post as to why he was not able to return to Bangladesh. Britain has not clarified their position, citing confidentiality provisions in the relevant British law.

‘There is no objection to his return’
Hours after Rahman’s post, the office of Chief Advisor Mohammad Yunus said that the interim government had no objection to his return (to Bangladesh). Yunus’ press secretary Shafiqul Alam said on social media, ‘There is no restriction or objection from the government in this matter.’

The President expressed deep concern
Meanwhile, Bangladesh President Mohammad Shahabuddin expressed deep concern over the deteriorating health condition of Khaleda Zia and urged the countrymen to pray for her speedy recovery.

“At this important juncture of the country’s democratic transition, I wish the speedy recovery of former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia,” state news agency BSS quoted Shahabuddin as saying in a statement.

Four days after being admitted to the private hospital, Zia was shifted to the coronary care unit as her multiple health problems became complicated.

workers gathered outside the hospital
Despite the party’s request not to crowd the hospital, a large number of BNP workers and supporters gathered outside the hospital to inquire about Zia’s health. Although hospital authorities did not issue any statement on the former prime minister’s health on Saturday, BNP general secretary Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said his condition was ‘extremely critical’. The party had earlier called for special prayers for him in all the mosques of Bangladesh after Friday prayers.

India has given a big statement regarding the extradition of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. In this he has said that he is looking into the request to extradite the former Prime Minister of Bangladesh. He is committed to ensuring the best interests of the people of that country. In fact, 78-year-old Sheikh Hasina was sentenced to death in her absence by a special tribunal in Dhaka last week for crimes against humanity. He is blamed for his government’s brutal crackdown on last year’s student-led protests.

Last left Bangladesh and came to India
Awami League leader Hasina had left Bangladesh and come to India on August 5 after large-scale protests last year. Hasina’s aide and former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal was also sentenced to death on similar charges. After the court’s decision, Bangladesh sent a letter to India demanding his extradition.

External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, ‘This request is being considered under judicial and internal legal processes.’

He said, ‘We are committed to the best interests of the people of Bangladesh, including peace, democracy, inclusivity and stability. We will continue to communicate constructively with all stakeholders in this regard.

Bangladesh has demanded extradition
Following the verdict against Hasina, Bangladesh’s Foreign Ministry demanded that India immediately hand her over to Dhaka under the extradition treaty in view of her conviction. The ministry said, ‘As per the existing extradition treaty between the two countries, this is also India’s responsibility.’

What did Hasina say?
Hasina said the verdict was given by an ‘extrajudicial tribunal, established and presided over by an unelected government which has no democratic mandate.’

The decision came a few months before the parliamentary elections
This decision against the former Prime Minister has come a few months before the parliamentary elections in Bangladesh. Hasina’s Awami League party has been barred from participating in the elections to be held in February. According to India’s initial assessment, the process of sentencing Hasina to death was believed to have several flaws, including the ‘unconstitutional’ appointment of judges. Jaiswal also said that India is closely monitoring all the developments in Bangladesh.

On a question regarding Bangladesh’s National Security Advisor Khalilur Rahman inviting his Indian counterpart Ajit Doval to visit Bangladesh, the Foreign Ministry spokesperson said that it will be considered when the time comes. Rahman had come to New Delhi last week to attend a security conference. He also held a bilateral meeting with Doval.

Indonesia’s capital Jakarta has achieved the title of the world’s most populous city. According to the new report of the United Nations, World Urbanization Prospectus, 2025, released on November 18, Jakarta has now overtaken Japan’s capital Tokyo and reached the first place with a population of about 42 million, which is equal to the total population of a country like Canada.

According to the report, Bangladesh’s capital Dhaka is at second place in this list, whose population is about 3.7 crores. At the same time, Tokyo, which was in first place for a long time, has now slipped to third place and in this list, India’s national capital Delhi is at fourth place.

How Jakarta climbed from 33rd place to first place

The UN report is also shocking because in the 2018 UN report, Jakarta was ranked 33rd and its population was stated to be only 11 million, whereas Tokyo was considered to be the most populous city in the world at that time, with a population of around 37 million.

Actually, this big change has come after a big change in the new calculation method adopted by the United Nations. Earlier, the UN urban population figures were mainly based on government records and national statistics of the respective countries, but the problem with this was that each country used to decide the city boundaries as per its convenience. Some countries considered only the municipal area as a city, while some considered the entire metropolitan area. This created disparity in global comparison.

At the same time, to overcome this shortcoming in 2025, the United Nations implemented the same criteria for classifying cities, towns and rural areas for all countries. In the new approach, it was seen that the city actually extends to the areas where people work, live and everyday life is connected to the city, they were also included in the urban population.

UN Widespread impact of new method seen in Jakarta

This new approach had the greatest impact in the case of Jakarta. Jakarta is spread on the northwest coast of the island of Java and is surrounded by several densely populated areas, which are actually part of the city, but in Indonesia’s official census these areas were not considered part of the Jakarta metropolitan area for a long time. All these areas were also included in the calculations in a new way, due to which the population of Jakarta increased rapidly to the figure of 3 crores.

Also read: ‘India is the third largest domestic aviation market in the world’, PM Modi said at the inauguration of Safran MRO center in Hyderabad.

After the coup in Bangladesh, Pakistan is kind to the interim government there. Although the general public in Pakistan itself is facing the brunt of inflation, yet the Shahbaz government is continuously exporting ration to Bangladesh and organizations spreading terror against India there. In a recent report it was claimed that Dhaka has become the base of Pakistani intelligence agency ISI. However, India is keeping an eye on this entire activity.

Pakistan will give one lakh ton rice to Bangladesh

Pakistan will now export one lakh tonnes of rice to Bangladesh. Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP) had issued a tender for this last week. This is the largest consignment of rice sent from Pakistan to Bangladesh so far. In February this year, the first consignment of 50,000 tonnes of rice was exported after both countries started trade at the government level with rice import. A leading rice exporter said it would be good for business if trade with Bangladesh increases as rice exports have declined by 28 per cent in the first quarter of fiscal year 2025-26.

Mohammad Yunus came openly against India

Bangladesh’s Chief Advisor Mohammad Yunus is not leaving any opportunity to provoke India. Recently he handed over the map of Greater Bangladesh to the delegation from Pakistan, Turkey and Canada. In this map many parts of India were shown in Bangladesh. Bangladesh is naming it the so-called Art of Triumph. This was not a display of any kind of art, but was meant to give a signal to international Islamic countries.

During his first visit to China in April this year, Mohammad Yunus had said that 7 north-eastern states of India are cut off from the sea and Bangladesh is the only sea gate in this region. He had invited China to increase economic influence in the region, to which India had lodged a strong objection. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar had said that Northeast is the strategic axis of India, which is an important connectivity center for BIMSTEC countries (Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand).

Why is Pakistan kind to Bangladesh?

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif and its Field Marshal Asim Munir have been using Bangladesh’s land against India for the past few days, in which Mohammad Yunus is fully helping them. Pakistan seems to be so kind to Bangladesh in its efforts to spread terror in India and destabilize the North-Eastern states.

Strong tremors of a powerful earthquake were felt in Bangladesh on Friday morning (21 November 2025). The intensity of the earthquake has been measured at 5.7 on the Richter scale. According to local media reports, at least 6 people died and dozens were injured. The epicenter of the earthquake was in Ghorashal area of Narsingdi district, about 25 kilometers from Dhaka. This shock spread panic among the people not only in Bangladesh but also in many parts of India.

According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake was felt at 10:38 am. Its depth was 10 kilometers below. Earthquakes of such shallow depth can often cause greater damage, the effect of which was clearly visible in Dhaka.

Damage to buildings in Dhaka
According to the information of local channel DBC, 3 people died when part of the wall and roof of a building collapsed. Three pedestrians were crushed to death when the railing of the bridge broke. Many other people were injured at different places. The tremors, which were felt for several seconds, created chaos in the entire city. People came out of their homes, offices and shops and gathered on the streets.

Strong earthquake tremors shook people in West Bengal today. The shaking ground was felt in many districts of the state including Kolkata. According to the information, an earthquake occurred about 27 kilometers east of Tungi in Bangladesh on Friday morning, whose tremors were felt till Bengal. The tremors were recorded at 10.38 am local time. According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC), reports of mild tremors have also been reported from many areas after the earthquake.

Tremors were also recorded in many districts of Bengal including Malda, Nadia, Cooch Behar, South Dinajpur and Hooghly. The tremors were not limited to West Bengal only, but the earthquake was felt in many parts of Tripura also. It is being told that after the earthquake in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, the tremors reached the North-East and Kolkata.

Earthquake tremors felt in Pakistan-Afghanistan also

Strong earthquake tremors were felt in Pakistan in the early morning, after which people in many areas got scared and came out of their homes. The National Center for Seismology said that the intensity of the earthquake was recorded at 5.2 on the Richter scale and its center was located at a depth of about 135 kilometers from the ground. It is a matter of relief that no damage has been reported so far.

Earthquake tremors were also felt in Afghanistan. According to the National Seismological Centre, the first tremor occurred at 1:59 pm, whose epicenter was at a depth of about 190 kilometers. After this, at 3:09 am, a second, more intense tremor was felt in Pakistan, whose magnitude was 5.2.

Afghanistan, Pakistan and large parts of North India are counted among the most active earthquake-prone areas of the world. Due to the collision of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, earthquakes ranging from mild to strong tremors occur frequently.

Why do earthquakes occur?

To understand why earthquakes occur, it is first important to know the structure of the Earth. The Earth’s outer layer, which includes the crust and upper mantle, is made up of a total of 15 major and minor tectonic plates. These plates do not remain stable, but keep moving very slowly. When these plates come near each other and collide or rub against each other, excessive energy pressure is created and takes the form of an earthquake.

Former Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina has been convicted and sentenced to death by the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) in the case of crimes against humanity. Hasina’s son Sajeeb Wajed on Thursday (20 November 2025) called this entire judicial process a sham and an eyewash.

Bangladesh’s ICT found Sheikh Hasina guilty in three out of five cases and sentenced her in two cases. Haseena was sentenced to life imprisonment in one case and death sentence in the other case. This punishment was given for the violent action taken during the student protests last year.

Question: What is your reaction to Sheikh Hasina’s death sentence?

Sajeeb Wajed: This has been done completely illegally. This is a joke. You have a government that is completely unelected, unconstitutional, illegal. They removed 17 judges of this tribunal and appointed a new judge who has no experience on the trial bench and has said very bad things about my mother in front of everyone. He is clearly biased.

Question: Does this have anything to do with the elections in Bangladesh?

Sajeeb Wajed: What they have done is that they have blamed my mother. They have again changed the law so that anyone accused of a crime cannot run in elections, which is a complete violation of due process because you cannot ban someone unless they are convicted, so they had to pass this sentence in a hurry. They have also banned our party, Awami League, from the elections. There is no democracy in Bangladesh.

Question: After the death sentence, Bangladesh is now requesting India to send back Sheikh Hasina. Is this appeal correct, what do you think will happen next?

Sajeeb Wajed: There should be a law along with the extradition agreement. First of all, there should be a democratic government, which this government is not. Second, legal procedures should be followed, which has not been done. The process itself should be legal and in Bangladesh the process was completely illegal. On this basis, legally, India cannot extradite my mother. India has no responsibility.

Question: How do you see India’s role in helping and protecting your mother under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi?

Sajeeb Wajed: I will always be grateful to Narendra Prime Minister Modi. He has ensured my mother’s safety. He saved my mother’s life. As the head of a country, he is keeping him under tight security. For this I will always be grateful to the Government of India and the people of India.

Question: How do you think India will react to Bangladesh’s appeal for your mother’s extradition?

Sajeeb Wajed: I am confident that the Modi government will not succumb to the unconstitutional and illegal pressure of the illegal government led by Yunus.

Question: Is Muhammad Yunus government planning any conspiracy to kill your mother?

Sajeeb Wajed: No they won’t be able to kill them. How will they actually enforce the punishment? First of all, they can’t catch them. Second, once the rule of law comes, this entire process will come to an end. Everything in Bangladesh is so illegal and unconstitutional and violates every legal principle that once the rule of law comes in, everything will be struck down in court. This won’t last. Yunus cannot touch my mother.

QuestionIf the Congress Party was in power in India, what would have been its reaction?

Sajeeb Wajed: The Congress party would have done exactly the same. There is rule of law in India and you have constitutional process. You people have always followed the Constitution and laws.

Question: Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi has not issued a single statement in support of your mother. Is this disappointing for you?

Sajeeb Wajed: No, I have no opinion on this.

Question: How is Pakistan influencing the decisions of Bangladesh Government led by Mohammad Yunus?

Sajeeb Wajed: Pakistan is influencing the decisions of this government. Pakistan has helped this government from the beginning. Pakistan was involved in the protest against my mother. As you have seen, this government is building very close relations with Pakistan and giving a free hand to Pakistani institutions in Bangladesh. Lashkar-e-Taiba, their commander is living and speaking in Bangladesh, and has taken credit for the recent bomb attack in New Delhi, while under Yunus’ rule, Bangladesh is a part of Pakistan and is acting as a haven for terrorists.

Question: Should the Nobel Prize given to Mohammad Yunus be withdrawn in view of the gross violations of human rights in Bangladesh?

Sajeeb Wajed: Nobel committees never take back their prizes, but look at Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi in Myanmar. He also won the Nobel Prize. The peace prize is actually given through lobbying, but they caused atrocities on the Rohingyas. Now Yunus is making Bangladesh a failed country and an Islamic terrorist country.

Question: Will Sheikh Hasina be able to come to Bangladesh again, what do you think?

Sajeeb Wajed: I have full confidence that she will return to Bangladesh in the future. She is the daughter of Bangladesh. Our party is the biggest. we’re going nowhere. We have lakhs of supporters.

Question: Have Awami League members and leaders been harassed by the current government in Bangladesh?

Sajeeb Wajed: Yes, thousands of our leaders and activists are in jail. We have 100 Parliament members who are in jail. There has been no trial or investigation. There is no charge on them. He has been repeatedly refused bail. He is a political prisoner. But, our party is very big. You cannot arrest everyone because there is no space in jails.

Question: Is Yunus government doing vendetta politics against Sheikh Hasina and her party?

Sajeeb Wajed: Of course, this is political change. Mohammad Yunus has the support of Jamaat-e-Islami, which had killed 30 lakh of our people during the freedom struggle. Our government finally conducted trials for that fight. This is the revenge of the Jamaat and the Jamaat never wanted Bangladesh to be independent from Pakistan. Now Jamaat is trying to come to power with Yunus and make Bangladesh a part of Pakistan.
