Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday (November 1) expressed deep concern over the health of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Khaleda Zia and said that India is ready to provide her all possible assistance. This comment of PM Modi comes after the alleged statement of Khaleda Zia’s party leaders, in which it has been said that she is very unwell and the former Prime Minister of Bangladesh has been put on ventilation.

PM Modi posted on Twitter, “I am deeply concerned to know about the health of Begum Khaleda Zia, who has contributed to the public life of Bangladesh for many years. We wish her a speedy recovery. India is ready to provide all possible assistance.”

What did BNP tell?

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairperson Khaleda Zia, 80, was admitted to a private hospital on November 23 after she developed a chest infection that affected both her heart and lungs. Four days later, Khaleda Zia was shifted to the coronary care unit due to multiple health complications.

A local news portal quoted BNP vice-president Advocate Ahmed Azam Khan as saying that Jiah’s condition has deteriorated and she has been put on ventilation. “His condition is very serious. Nothing can be done except prayers from the entire country,” he told the media outside Evercare Hospital in Dhaka.

‘Jiya’s condition critical’
According to news agency PTI, BNP General Secretary Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir also confirmed that Zia’s condition remains critical and her treatment is ongoing. A Bangladesh court on Monday sentenced ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to five years in jail and her niece and British MP Tulip Siddiq to two years in jail in a land scam case. According to the news of state-run BSS news agency, Judge Mohammad Rabiul Alam of Dhaka Special Judge’s Court-4 also sentenced Hasina’s sister Sheikh Rehana to seven years in jail in the same case. A case was registered against 17 people in this corruption case.

The court pronounced this verdict in a packed courtroom in the absence of the three accused. Each of the remaining 14 accused was jailed for five years. The court also imposed a fine of Tk 1 lakh each on all the 17 convicts, including Haseena, Rehana and Siddiq, and in default of payment of the fine, they will have to undergo additional jail term of six months.

She is the daughter of Britain’s Bangladeshi Labor Party leader Siddiq Rehana and has been MP from Hampstead and Highgate since 2015. In April, the interim government had issued an arrest warrant for 43-year-old Siddiq as part of its investigation into corruption during Hasina’s tenure as prime minister.

He was found guilty of influencing his aunt Haseena to acquire land on the outskirts of Dhaka in the name of his mother, brother and sister. However, he has vehemently denied these allegations. According to the news of ‘The Daily Star’ newspaper, this is the fourth decision related to 78-year-old Hasina in the cases filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

On January 13, ACC had registered a case of land scam against 15 people including Hasina, Rehana and Siddiq. These people were accused of illegally obtaining the allotment of the plot during the tenure of the former Prime Minister. The investigating officer later filed a charge sheet against 17 accused on March 10.

The ACC had filed six separate cases at its Dhaka Unified District Office-1 between January 12 and 14 over alleged irregularities in the allotment of land under the ‘Purbachal New Town’ project, ‘The Dhaka Tribune’ newspaper reported.

According to the ACC, Hasina, in collusion with Rajuk officials, illegally acquired six plots of land, each measuring 10 katha (7,200 sq ft) in size, for herself and several relatives, including her son Sajeeb Wajid Joy and daughter Saima Wajid Putul, even though they were not eligible under existing rules.

ACC officials said Siddiq used his position to get plots in the names of Rehana, Bobby and Azmeena. Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK) is the government agency responsible for monitoring the regulations from planning to construction of government buildings in Bangladesh.

In this case, on July 31, charges were framed against 29 people, including Haseena, Rehana, Joy, Putul and Tulip. Hasina was sentenced on November 27 to 21 years of rigorous imprisonment, which includes seven years in each of the three cases filed in the Purbachal land scam case. Joy and Putul were co-accused in separate cases and were sentenced to five years in each case.

According to a report by ‘BBC’ (British Broadcasting Corporation), Siddiq lives in London and has rejected the allegations against him. Britain has no extradition treaty with Bangladesh. It is classified as a ‘2B’ country, which means that clear evidence must be presented to lawyers and judges to approve any extradition.

Hasina has been living in India since the massive protests in Bangladesh on August 5 last year. Due to the protests, he had to leave power and his Awami League government fell. He was declared a fugitive by a court.

Hasina was sentenced to death in absentia by a special tribunal last month on charges of “crimes against humanity” over her government’s brutal crackdown on student protests last year. The ousted Prime Minister says the allegations against him are “full of bias and politically motivated”.

Self-exiled acting president of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Tariq Rahman on Saturday said that returning home is not completely under his control. That too at a time when his mother and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia is suffering from a very serious illness.

Former Prime Minister was admitted on 23 November

BNP leader Zia (80) was admitted to a private hospital on November 23 after suffering from a chest infection. Both his heart and lungs were affected due to the infection. Sharing a post on social media from London on Saturday, Rahman (60) said that like any child, he wants to be with his mother in this moment of crisis. Rahman has been living in Britain since 2008.

He wrote, ‘But unlike others, taking a unilateral decision in this regard is neither in my hands nor completely under my control. The sensitivity of this matter also limits the scope for detailed explanation.

Rehman said his family hopes that ‘once the current political realities reach the desired level, my long and anxious wait to return to my homeland will finally end.’

However, it was not made clear in his post as to why he was not able to return to Bangladesh. Britain has not clarified their position, citing confidentiality provisions in the relevant British law.

Hours after Rahman’s post, the office of Chief Advisor Mohammad Yunus said that the interim government had no objection to his return (to Bangladesh). Yunus’ press secretary Shafiqul Alam said on social media, ‘There is no restriction or objection from the government in this matter.’

They have also banned our party, Awami League, from the elections. There is no democracy in Bangladesh.

Question: After the death sentence, Bangladesh is now requesting India to send back Sheikh Hasina. Is this appeal correct, what do you think will happen next?

Sajeeb Wajed: There should be a law along with the extradition agreement. First of all, there should be a democratic government, which this government is not. Second, legal procedures should be followed, which has not been done. The process itself should be legal and in Bangladesh the process was completely illegal. On this basis, legally, India cannot extradite my mother. India has no responsibility.

Question: How do you see India’s role in helping and protecting your mother under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi?

Sajeeb Wajed: I will always be grateful to Narendra Prime Minister Modi. He has ensured my mother’s safety. He saved my mother’s life. As the head of a country, he is keeping him under tight security. For this I will always be grateful to the Government of India and the people of India.

Question: How do you think India will react to Bangladesh’s appeal for your mother’s extradition?

Sajeeb Wajed: I am confident that the Modi government will not succumb to the unconstitutional and illegal pressure of the illegal government led by Yunus.

Question: Is Muhammad Yunus government planning any conspiracy to kill your mother?

Sajeeb Wajed: No they won’t be able to kill them. How will they actually enforce the punishment? First of all, they can’t catch them. Second, once the rule of law comes, this entire process will come to an end. Everything in Bangladesh is so illegal and unconstitutional and violates every legal principle that once the rule of law comes in, everything will be struck down in court. This won’t last. Yunus cannot touch my mother.

Sajeeb Wajed: No, I have no opinion on this.

Question: How is Pakistan influencing the decisions of Bangladesh Government led by Mohammad Yunus?

Sajeeb Wajed: Pakistan is influencing the decisions of this government. Pakistan has helped this government from the beginning. Pakistan was involved in the protest against my mother. As you have seen, this government is building very close relations with Pakistan and giving a free hand to Pakistani institutions in Bangladesh. Lashkar-e-Taiba, their commander is living and speaking in Bangladesh, and has taken credit for the recent bomb attack in New Delhi, while under Yunus’ rule, Bangladesh is a part of Pakistan and is acting as a haven for terrorists.

Question: Should the Nobel Prize given to Mohammad Yunus be withdrawn in view of the gross violations of human rights in Bangladesh?

Sajeeb Wajed: Nobel committees never take back their prizes, but look at Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi in Myanmar. He also won the Nobel Prize. The peace prize is actually given through lobbying, but they caused atrocities on the Rohingyas. Now Yunus is making Bangladesh a failed country and an Islamic terrorist country.

Question: Will Sheikh Hasina be able to come to Bangladesh again, what do you think?

Sajeeb Wajed: I have full confidence that she will return to Bangladesh in the future. She is the daughter of Bangladesh. Our party is the biggest. we’re going nowhere. We have lakhs of supporters.

Question: Have Awami League members and leaders been harassed by the current government in Bangladesh?

Sajeeb Wajed: Yes, thousands of our leaders and activists are in jail. We have 100 Parliament members who are in jail. There has been no trial or investigation. There is no charge on them. He has been repeatedly refused bail. He is a political prisoner. But, our party is very big. You cannot arrest everyone because there is no space in jails.

Question: Is Yunus government doing vendetta politics against Sheikh Hasina and her party?

Sajeeb Wajed: Of course, this is political change. Mohammad Yunus has the support of Jamaat-e-Islami, which had killed 30 lakh of our people during the freedom struggle. Our government finally conducted trials for that fight. This is the revenge of the Jamaat and the Jamaat never wanted Bangladesh to be independent from Pakistan. Now Jamaat is trying to come to power with Yunus and make Bangladesh a part of Pakistan.
