Bank Holidays: In our country, banks remain closed on the basis of national and regional holidays. Banks remain closed across the country on national holidays, but regional holidays vary according to states. Many times, amidst the hustle and bustle of the week, people postpone important bank related work to Saturday, but it is important to keep in mind that apart from Sunday, banks in India are also closed on the second and fourth Saturday of the month. As far as today is concerned, today is the first Saturday of the month, so today banks will be open only in other states except Uttar Pradesh.

Why are banks closed in UP today?

Actually, banks will remain closed in Uttar Pradesh today on the occasion of Hazrat Ali’s birthday. In such a situation, if you are also a resident of UP and are planning to go to the bank to settle some important work, then postpone it for today. Apart from this, banks will remain closed on occasions like Swami Vivekananda’s birth anniversary, Makar Sankranti/Magh Bihu, Uttarayan Punyakal/Pongal/Maghe Sankranti/Makar Sankranti, Thiruvalluvar Day, Uzhavar Thirunal, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose’s birthday/Saraswati Puja, Veer Surendra Sai Jayanti/Basant Panchami and Republic Day, but their holidays will vary depending on the states.

Bank holidays in January

January 12, 2026- Banks will remain closed in West Bengal on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda.

January 14, 2026- Banks will remain closed in Gujarat, Odisha, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh on the occasion of Makar Sankranti and Magh Bihu.

January 15, 2026- Due to Uttarayan Punyakal, Pongal, Maghe Sankranti and Makar Sankranti, there will be bank holiday in the states of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Sikkim, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

January 16, 2026- Banks will remain closed in Tamil Nadu on the occasion of Thiruvalluvar Day.

January 17, 2026- Banks will remain closed in Tamil Nadu due to Uzhavar Thirunal.

January 23, 2026- There will be a bank holiday in Tripura, Odisha and West Bengal on the occasion of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose’s birth anniversary, Saraswati Puja (Shri Panchami), Veer Surendra Sai Jayanti and Basant Panchami.

January 26, 2026- Banks will remain closed across the country on the occasion of Republic Day.

Take help of online banking

If customers know about bank holidays in advance, it helps them to plan bank related work properly and avoid last minute panic. However, bank closure does not mean that customers cannot conduct their financial transactions during the holidays. Even when branches are closed, online banking services, ATMs, mobile banking apps and UPI remain available to customers for fund transfer, bill payments and other regular transactions.

However, services that require branch visits such as large amount deposits, check clearance and demand draft issuance are simply not possible. To avoid inconvenience, customers are advised to plan these tasks in advance and make maximum use of digital banking options during bank closures.
