Bank Strike on February 12: Tomorrow i.e. Thursday, 12th February, bank employees will be on strike across the country. Due to this strike called by many bank unions, people are now worried about what impact it will have on regular banking services. Although the official bank holiday has not been announced yet, along with this many government banks like Bank of Baroda, SBI, PNB have warned of interruption in service on the day of the strike.

Which unions are involved in the bank strike?

This strike has been announced by major bank organizations like All India Bank Employees Association (AIBEA), All India Bank Officers Association (AIBOA), and Bank Employees Federation of India (BEFI). At the same time, 10 Central Trade Unions (CTUs) of the country have supported it.

Why will bank employees go on strike?

The main reason for the strike is the four new labor codes notified in November 2025, which will replace the existing 29 labor laws. Trade unions argue that the new system is against workers and has imposed strict conditions for union registration to form a trade union, which weakens labor protection. Anyway, bank unions have been demanding to fulfill long pending demands such as implementing a five-day banking week and introducing better work-life balance for employees.

Will banks be open or closed?

Till now, no big bank or Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced any official banking holiday on 12th February. This means banks will remain open, but if a large number of employees join the strike, branch-level services may be slightly disrupted. Public sector lenders like State Bank of India (SBI), Bank of Baroda, Punjab National Bank (PNB) and Indian Bank have expressed the possibility of operational impact, especially at physical branches and service counters.

Private sector banks like HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank are not likely to be affected much.

Bank employees’ unions under the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) have announced a nationwide strike on January 27. Their demand is to implement the 5-day work week schedule for bank employees. That means banks remain open from Monday to Friday and have two days off – Saturday and Sunday every week.

Banks will remain closed for 3 days

If bank employees really go on strike on January 27, there will be a long gap in the functioning of public sector banks. There will be a Sunday holiday in banks on 25th January, banks will remain closed on 26th January on the occasion of Republic Day and bank employees can go on strike on 27th January. This means that there is a possibility of banking operations coming to a standstill for three full days. Anyway, most of the public sector banks have already warned their customers that if there is a strike, there may be problems in banking services.

UFBU gave notice

The strike is being organized under the leadership of United Forum of Bank Unions. UFBU is the platform of nine major organizations of bank employees and officers, which include All India Bank Officers Confederation, All India Bank Employees Association, Nation Confederation of Bank Employees, All India Bank Officers Association, Bank Employees Federation of India, Indian National Bank Employees Federation, Indian National Bank Officers Congress, National Organization of Bank Works along with National Organization of Bank Officers. After UFBU’s notice regarding the strike, the Chief Labor Commissioner held conciliation meetings on Wednesday and Thursday, but nothing positive came out.

What is the demand?

The United Forum of Bank Unions is seeking approval from the government to implement the five-day working system in the banking sector. This demand includes declaring all Saturdays except the second and fourth Saturday of every month as public holidays. As of now banks remain closed on the second and fourth Saturday of the month.

Unions say that this will increase the morale of the employees, which will improve the quality of work and the services of the banking sector will also improve. He says that this will not have any impact on customer service.

According to news agency PTI, this bank strike was postponed after a meeting with Chief Labor Commissioner. In this meeting, the representatives of the Indian Banks Association (IBA) and the Ministry of Finance assured to consider the demands made by the union.

What is the demand-
The main demand of the United Forum of Bank Unins (UFBU) was that the recent rules of the Department of Financial Services were removed on the performance review and performance licked incentives because they assume that they are dangerous for their Job Security.
