A historic deal has been seen in India’s banking sector! Federal Bank has decided to sell its 9.99% stake to America’s leading private equity company Blackstone, the total value of which is about ₹ 6,196.5 crore. This investment was made by Asia II Topco XIII Pte. Ltd., which is an affiliate of Blackstone. Under this deal, Federal Bank will issue more than 27 crore warrants, the price of which has been fixed at ₹ 227 per warrant. Blackstone will have to pay 25% of the amount initially, while the remaining 75% will be paid when they choose to convert the warrants into shares. Most interestingly — Blackstone will also get the right to nominate a non-executive director, which will increase his strategic influence in the management of the bank. Blackstone already has over $50 billion invested in India and this deal reflects their growing confidence in India. This is a big confidence signal not only for the Federal Bank but for the entire Indian economy.

Big changes are coming in banking! Now customers can add not one but four nominees to their bank account. This new facility will come into effect from 1 November 2025. Customers will be able to decide who among the four nominees will get how much share and who will be given priority. That is, if the first nominee is not able to claim, then the second, third and fourth nominees will be able to claim respectively. This has been called the Successive Nominee System. Earlier, only one nominee was allowed, which often gave rise to account claims and family disputes. Now having four nominees and clear stake, the succession process will be easy, transparent and dispute free. Customers can divide their deposits in fixed percentage, like 25-25% share to wife, son, daughter and mother. There will be no legal case or complication if four nominees are already registered with the bank, and the bank can directly transfer the amount or locker items to the nominee by looking at the records. Guidelines for the form and process for adding, changing or canceling nomination will be issued soon. This change is an important step for both family security and banking transparency.

The RBI has implemented a new rule to dispose of Nominee Claim of bank accounts and lockers in 15 days. Now the deceased person’s Nominee will get funds quickly and if the bank delays, they will also have to pay compensation, which includes the bank’s interest rate + 4% annual interest. This rule will be applicable to private and cooperative banks by 31 March 2026. The process which will not have Nominee and the deposit amount will be less than 5 lakhs in the cooperative bank or less than 15 lakhs in other banks. But if the amount is more than this, the bank can ask for additional documents like Succession Certificate and Legal Heir Certificate. This move of RBI is taken to dispose of the claim connected to the accounts of the deceased customers, so that customers can get better service and the process of documents is also easy and standardized. Nominee accounts closing from this rule will now be even more smooth and safe.
