In a research published in the American Journal of Infection Control, it was seen what spreads inside the bathroom when the toilet is flushed. In this study, very fine particles flying in the air were tracked both with the lid open and closed and it was seen where they settle. The results were shocking. When flushing, such particles that are invisible to the naked eye can spread to surrounding surfaces and simply closing the lid does not stop them completely. After this, flushing doesn’t seem so innocent.

What does the research say?

According to the study, when flushing, very small particles fly upwards from the toilet bowl. These are so minute that they are not visible to the eyes and spread rapidly with the wind. The surprising thing is that even when the lid is closed, some particles come out and spread in the bathroom. This does not mean that closing the lid is useless. It just means that the process is messier and more complex than we think. Toilets are not completely sealed. There are small gaps around the lid and seat, from where air and droplets can escape.

Why is it important to close the lid?

Even if the lid doesn’t stop everything, it does make a difference. Instead of flying straight out, larger droplets hit the bottom of the lid. This makes a lot of sense in homes where toothbrushes, towels and hands are nearby. Closing the lid reduces splatter and moisture does not spread far. What else to do for toilet hygiene?

Relying only on the lid is not enough. Proper cleanliness comes from combining several habits. It is very important to regularly clean the toilet seat, flush handle and surrounding surfaces. Ventilation also plays an important role. A closed bathroom traps air and steam, allowing particles to linger longer.
